Body odor in a 6year old.

Moms View Message Board: Parenting Discussion: Archive July-December 2004: Body odor in a 6year old.
By Beth on Tuesday, November 2, 2004 - 09:51 am:

My 6 year old ds has problems with body odor sometimes. This will be in the morning after he has taken a bath the night before. I was just curious those of you with boys when did you notice such problems. He seems so young for deodorant. I was not concerned about itas a medical issue but my mom mentioned problems with the kidneys and my sister has a girl who is three on her case load with this problem. The girl had something wrong with her hormones. I did call the doctor and they said could be normal doesn't hurt to have him checked out. Our appointment is not until Nov 11th. So meanwhile has anyone else expierenced this?? Thanks

my 8 yo ds can be a bit "manly" smelling sometimes when he gets sweaty. Is ds too hot at night? I agree doesnt hurt to check it out.

My dd had body odor that young!! She is 14 now, and doesn't have any medical issues. I used to buy a natural deodorant for her at the health store, (mineral salt, I think?) and that worked fine until she reached puberty. She does have a problem with exessive sweating, but we've found a good product for that. I thought my dd was the only one! People would look at me like I was crazy when I would tell them my 5-year-old had body odor! My son didn't have the problem.

MY 5yo ds has this problem, sometimes, but it is from the top of his head or the crook of his neck, not underarms or what I would consider "body odor". Since he tends to sweat at night, I just consider it a boy smell and wipe him off before he goes to school.

Michele, What is the "good product" you found for excessive sweating. I have always had a problem with sweating a lot have not found anything that works. I hate it, I end up wearing only certain fabrics because of it. (no silk for me!)Thanks!

I'm not Michelle, but I sweat too Amy! :) A girl in our youth group told me about "Certain Dri." You can get it at almost any pharmacy, but you have to ask for it. It is not prescription, but it is VERY strong so they keep it behind the counter. You use it at night----never immediately after shaving or bathing when your pores are open. Believe me, I learned the hard way---youch it burns! You can feel it just literally clamp your sweatglands closed. I put it on at night and use my regular anti-perspirant in the morning and the combination of the two have made a BIG difference in wetness and odor for me.

The product I get for my dd is called Maxim, by Corad Healthcare. I get it on the internet. Pam, it sounds a lot like the one you use...it's very strong and you use it at night.

Maxim Deodorant

My nephew has this very issue. My sister has him change his bedding every other day. She uses a spray on the sheets in between. And he now showers in the morning instead of before bed. On a really hot day he will shower when he gets home from school too. And she bought him shampoo from the hair dresser with tea tree oil in it. Oh and she had him stop wearing PJ's to bed because part of his issue was over heating, he sleeps in boxers and a tank top even in the winter. He would wake up in the middle of the night sweaty and by morning he would just stink. And she washes his hats nightly. Like above most of his odor comes from his head and neck. She also gave him shower lessons, we assume they will remember the rules of washing our necks, our pits and our bottoms but they get in get rushed and forget. This has curved some of his issues. And she bought him a deodorant, which she has to make sure he puts on.

Anyway, you aren't alone. And it isn't all that uncommon. My sister had the same issue growing up. Her body would let off anything she ate while she slept and sweated.

make sure he is eating right and drinking lots of water too. junk food and low water intake has a lot to do with sweat. it's also the bacteria on the skin that helps create that odor. you can use anti-bacterial soap and mitchum has an antibacterial deodorant. that should help!! i had the same problem!
