Potty Training :) / :(

Moms View Message Board: Parenting Discussion: Archive July-December 2004: Potty Training :) / :(

The happy face is Shane is doing GREAT!!! Barely any accidents, sleeps in regular underpants, tells us he has to go. The thing that got him hooked was learning to pee standing up... that was the coolest incentive for him. Anyway, the sad face is Maddie is regressing. She was doing WAY better than Shane for a long time, but lately has just been sporadic. She is wet EVERY night, and often will have accidents during the day. No big deal really, I know it's common, but is there any way to get her interested again? She has been regressing in other ways, like not wanting to dress herself, and crying when you ask her to. If you ask her why she did something wrong, or why she didn't go to the potty she says "I don't know!!" I'm trying hard not to compare them, since they each have strong points. Does anyone have any potty training ideas for girls?? TIA!

My dd did the same thing...I even called the doctor to see if she maybe had a UTI or something. They said it was normal, I just left dd alone and continued to praise her efforts and started asking her more frequently during the day if she had to go potty. After about a month she got back in the swing of things. I also got dd some big girl stuff, like try getting her some of her "own" wipes and "own" hand soap. But I am sure she will come out of this slump..:) Good Luck

I think they are doing marvelous. Just two years old and twins. Really remarkable.

She might have a small bladder. I doubt it though. She is only two! My relatives 5 year pees every night in bed. Small bladder. No other reason. He is super heavy sleeper and will sleep right in the wet pee and never wake up.

I tried everything with ds - then one day he was fully pottied trained.

Some people trade
There is stickers for toys.

Crystal, you are definately shaming me and doing a really good job of it. Timmy is right on top of Shane and Maddie for age and he's not remotely interested. I thought we were making progress and then all of a sudden there was a screaming fit every time I suggested he sit on the potty.

I wonder if there is a school you can send them too like you can your dog? You send them away for 1 day and they come home trained. Sheesh, you could make millions off of this one.

Hang in there, you're leaps and bounds ahead of us.

Amanda, honestly, the big thing for him was really Nate showing him how to pee standing up. We have him stand on the stool, and lean over the potty with his hands on the back, because his "aim" was not very good. That way he just gets it right in the bowl, and is estatic!!! You should try letting Timmy do it, because apparently it's the coolest thing in the world!!! (I guess we girls don't get the big fuss... but who knows!) And if not, just hang in there... my mom said my brother was WAY harder than us girls, and it wasn't until just after his 4th birthday that he started going. I thought she was going to lose her mind over it!! Candis, I think we are going to try the big girls stuff idea, because it seems like she lost interest around the time Shane started standing up. Maybe she just feels left out. Thanks for the support everyone!!!

Crystal-I have to laugh, because DD totally went through a phase where she wanted to stand up to pee like Daddy. (My DH was horrified because she walked in and saw him once! LOL!)

I was having trouble getting my DD to use public restrooms, so I brought her to pick out stickers to decorate her portable potty seat. I made a huge deal of it and let her stick stickers everywhere on the seat. Then, we went into the bathroom to try it out. She thought it was so cool! She told my DH "See my cool seat! It's for peeing at the store!" Now, she'll use the seat in any public restroom! So, maybe your DD would like to decorate a seat with stickers of things she likes.:)

Crystal, I've left it go for a couple of weeks now so I think we're ready to try again. I'll have Tucker show him the standing up thing. That might just do the trick because until now, he has only sat down. If he's got to stand up, I can live with that. His aim can't be worse than anyone else's.

thanks for the hint

Oh, Crystal, I am soooo jealous!!! My DD is 2-1/2 and has NO interest at all in the potty!!! We've had that potty in the bathroom forever. She likes to sit on it, and use a tissue, which she asks for, and then imitates me wiping, but, take her diaper off and she's good for about a minute and a half!!!! Her grandmother just bought "Potty Elmo"... we figured, she loves Elmo, so maybe!!! Yeah, right!!! Now, the three of us sit in the bathroom... me on the toilet, her on the potty and Elmo on his, and I'm listening to "Elmo's on the potty doing peepee... you can too!!!!" But, no peepee!!!

You can almost read the frustration in this, can't ya???

So, I say, congratulations on how far you've come!!! Good mommy!!!

Crystal - your "standing up" remark cracked me up! I just did the same thing with ds (who is a year older than yours, BTW, and I am just *now* achieving some small success with the Big Boy Pants, but not sleeping through the night yet).

Jack (ds) still has issues getting his pants off in time, so I've been helping. The other night, DH was out, so I showed Jack that he could pee standing up. I had to help aim, though. His reaction was, (I swear - I can't make this stuff up!) "COOL!"

But then he said it was "safer" to sit for now.

Anyway, I must admit, I kind of left the "teaching to pee" to DH, because - well, *I* certainly am no expert on using one of those things.

There are all these small details...like: Do men even USE toilet paper for a pee, or do they just shake? Do they really use that flap in their underwear, or do they just pull down the whole works in front? What if they have to do both 1 & 2, do they stand, then sit, or just sit for the whole event? And, really - how do you hold it to aim? And where do you aim? On the side of the bowl or in the water? (see, the latter, as I learned, has a tricky splash-back effect).

Ah, mysteries of life. Some of them I was kinda happy not knowing.

Laura, ROFL, you gave me a good laugh this morning!

By Angellew on Wednesday, October 27, 2004 - 10:00 am:

LMBO!!!! Oh Laura!!! You brought up sooo many points!! And you're right, I'm happy not knowing the true answer to any of them!!! (I always wondered about those underwear flaps???)
