Nose bleeding question

Moms View Message Board: Parenting Discussion: Archive July-December 2004: Nose bleeding question
By Kim on Thursday, October 21, 2004 - 07:55 am:

Kyle is 10 and he has always been prone to his nose bleeding quite easily. But it didn't happen often. The doctor told me to get a humidifier last year. I didn't get one because I didn't have the money. I had him take hot steamy showers. That was during the winter when the heat is on. The last month has been hot and humid. Our house is very humid right now so I know its not dry. Within the last month Kyle has had over a dozen nose bleeds. The clotting has been HUGE. I am going to call the doctor. I am worried though because I know sometimes nose bleeds can indicate sickness. Does anyone have any information or experience that they could share? I am really really worried about him!

I had lots of nose bleeds as a child. I lived in NJ, so the cold air would aggrivate it. Honestly, it wasn't a bid deal. The last time I remember having multiple nose bleeds is when I moved to FL. I went from blizzard weather to mild climate, and the change made my nose spontaneously bleed a couple times a day for a few weeks. BTW, too much humidity caused some of them for me, so maybe it's too humid for him. Do you know if they still do cauterizing? (I don't think I spelled that right!!) I don't know much about it, but when I was younger they would do it for severe nosebleeds.

Kim, my oldest ds used to get nose bleeds all the time. They weren't too bad in the beginning, but then they got more frequent and harder to stop. I ended up taking him to an ENT. It turns out that the blood vessels in his nose were very close to the surface. This caused any type of trauma, blowing his nose to hard, sneezing, etc to cause it to bleed. We ended up having his nose cauterized. He had it done at an out patient clinic under general. It only took about 15 minutes for the procedure. He had it done first thing in the morning, he was a little sore that afternoon, but completely back to normal the next day. That was almost 4 years ago, and he hasn't had a nose bleed since.

I would suggest calling his doctor and having him checked out.

I had a million nose bleeds when I was younger. The doctor had my mom get this saline nose spray & I had to use it 3 times a day.

Thanks, guys for the info! The only thing that bothers me is that we have been in FL for three years, so its not the climate change. Nothing changed that I know of and they are kinda coming out of nowhere. Will talk to dr about your suggestions!

I took care of a boy who had nosebleeds all the time too. His were related to stress. Is your little man stressed a lot? This little boy that I knew let everything bother him and from that he got stressed which led to the bleeding.

By Kim on Friday, October 22, 2004 - 03:03 pm:

OH I forgot to mention....Thank for reminding me Rayanne! A lot of times he wakes up in the middle of the night with them also! No, he is under less stress at this point, but has gotten them when really upset. These seem mostly unprovoked. The bleeding time is longer and heavier and the clots are huge.

I go to the doctor Monday. Hopefully we'll figure it out then!

Good luck with the appointment, Kim. I hope they figure out what's up. Hopefully it's something simple like a dry nose. How are his feet, btw?

By Kim on Friday, October 22, 2004 - 03:25 pm:

His feet are GREAT Cat!!!!! I can see faint outlines on his ankles when he is in the sun, but he loads on the sunscreen like a good boy! Loyola said he has to be really careful in FL because sun exposure could cause skin cancer. Thanks for asking!

That's great, Kim! I'm so glad they healed so well (as I'm sure you all are!). :)

My ds would get nose bleeds alot because he was sleeping too warm. I figured out that he was under WAY too many blankets, I think he liked the feeling of being buried under all the weight of the blankets, once I left him in his jammies and one blanket he didnt have another nose bleed.

Me-nose bleeds all my life....tons when I was little.....dry air...colds.....an inside scab that wouldn't heal and would just break open....

As an adult-STRESS!!

My nose was bleeding during my wedding ceremony! I just kept swallowing the blood as fast as I could..It was SO gross. I don't think I even payed attention to the ceremony I was so busy trying to get the blood down my throat so it wouldn't come out my nose...

I feel sick just remembering it...LOL

I'm so sorry, they are scary to see. My daughter had them all the time. Her blood vessels were too close to the surface. She would be so embarassed because she had one at school, and since then was afraid it would happen again. It would bleed copiously for about two minutes.

We (pediatrician/us) tried everything, saline sprays, vaseline, humidifiers, etc...

The last and best resort was to have the vessel in the nose cauterized. This was done by an EMT. It has been over a year now, and no nose bleeds.

My advice is to see an specialist for advice on the nosebleeds.
