Sleeping through the night

Moms View Message Board: Parenting Discussion: Archive July-December 2004: Sleeping through the night
By Jackie on Wednesday, October 20, 2004 - 01:06 pm:

I know this is such a common question for moms of babies..People ask all the time if Faith is sleeping through the night. I honestly dont know what constitutes "Sleeping through the night".
Faith averages about 5-7 hrs a night..whichI know is good. BUT, she goes to sleep between 8 and 8:30,so she still gets up during the night. Last night she was sound asleep at 8pm exactly, and slept until 3:20am, so that was almost 7 1/2 hrs..Then shes up for an hr or hr and half, and Im up in less then 2 hrs to get the others kids ready for school.
Has anybody else have this problem? I cant keep her up much later then 8:30 as she is really crabby, and not much fun for anybody. Im glad she is getting all those hrs of sleep, but would be so nice if she did her long sleep starting at 10 or so.
Saturday night we went to a wedding and didnt get home until late. She slept from 11-5, which wasnt bad at all, but normally she would never stay up until 11pm, but being at the wedding she was all off schedule.

Jackie,

I would try your hardest to let her nap later in the afternoon, that way she will stay awake until atleast 9:30. Wouldn't it be great if they just came out on a schedule..LOL :)

I'm sure she is getting big!

I would love it if they came out on a schedule.
I would also give her a nap in the afternoon. My dd still wakes up at night, but it is only long enough to eat.

The baby book says to move bedtime in 10 to 15 minute increments every few days. For the next few nights try keeping her up until 8:15, then for the next few nights 8:30 aand so on. I tried that and it worked for us. And then just about the time I get her where I want her, some extracurricular event will blow it out of the water. LOL!

How old is your dd?

My dd didn't really start sleeping long hours until I put her in a real big bed. I don't think she ever really liked her crib. Oh well, at 3 1/2 I'm finally catching up on my sleep.

My youngest woke up in the middle of the night for a feeding until she was 13 months. Once she was able to get herself back to sleep-without me rocking or holding her, she would go back into the crib right after a feeding and sleep for the rest of the night.

Hey Jackie - at 10weeks old it sounds like your baby is doing great!!!!! You may want to pick up a copy of "The No-Cry Sleep Solution". It has good info on ages/sleep habits/schedules/etc.

Best of luck to you!

BTW - I think up to 4mo sleeping through the night is a 5 hour stretch - so good job Faith!

Hi I was just wondering if you are breast feeding or bottle, because maybe baby Faith isn't(if breast feeding) getting her tummy full enough to sleep more than five hours at a time. Although I think five hours is great at 10 weeks. My Jeremiah is going to be four months old and he is sleeping eight sometimes nine hours. Although he is bottle fed and he is not much of a napper, he only takes little cat naps like fourty mins. in the morning and the same in the afternoon. That was one thing my ped suggested to me to get him to sleep longer was to shorten his naps if possible, and I did and its wonderful! Good Luck

Yes Faith is breastfed during the night. For the last couple of nights shes been sleeping 6-7 hrs, but still getting up in the middle of the night. Imnot complaining, I know thats a good amt of sleep, just hoping we could push her bedtime uplater as she gets older.
Last night we didnt get home until late, and she finally got to sleep around 9:30, and slept until 4:50am.
