Dd fell out of crib

Moms View Message Board: Parenting Discussion: Archive July-December 2004: Dd fell out of crib
By Emdee on Wednesday, October 13, 2004 - 03:27 pm:

Well, dd is 17 months and I never thought she would be one that would climb out of the crib. But she did!!! I had layed her down for a nap and she wasn't giving it up, so I thought I would let her cry a few mintues. It had been about 5 minutes and I here a loud "thump" and then her screaming. She fell right on her head and shoulders. Poor girl! I rocked her and she went right to sleep then, so I don't know if she hurt her arm or not. She was pointing to it before she went to sleep, but I thought I would let her sleep now and check it later. I guess we need to remove her bumper pad so she can't climb on it, but hopefully she learned a lesson and won't do it again--it broke my heart and I can't bear to see her fall again! She does sign language, and as I was rocking her, I quit rocking thinking she was asleep. She opened her eyes, told me more, so I started rocking again and she went to back to sleep! I thought that was really sweet.

Poor thing. Robin climbed out of his crib when he was 11 months old. We just went to a toddler bed at that point. Hope your dd's okay. Give her a hug. :) Oh, that's so sweet about the sign language. :)

I was so lucky ds didn't start climbing out of the crib until about 26 months. At that time we just put him in a toddler because we didn't want him to try it again.
I am not sure if she is to young for a toddler bed though. My ped says to keep them in the crib until it becomes a danger in itself.
I hope everything is okay with her.

At what age should a kid go to a toddler bed? I put both of mine in a bed around 20 months or so, because I was sick of scraping my knuckles when I changed the crib sheet! They were both fine. Also, Emily had put her foot on the top of the crib railing and I thought climbing out wasn't too far away.

I got booted out of a crib when I was 15 months old to make room for a sister! My parents weren't too rich when I was little and I suppose they didn't want to buy another crib.

Awww....poor girl.
For future reference, my Pediatrician said not to put babies/kids to bed after they have knocked their heads for at least an hour.

I hope she feels better. Poor little girl. :)

Thanks everyone! A toddler bed is in the near future--we have one on the way, due in Feb. We are just waiting to get past the "critical" stage with the pregnancy before we get dd's new bed set up. I guess we need to hurry, though! She was no worse for the wear--I tried to take her to the bed and explain that she fell, but I don't know if it sunk in. Hopefully she learned her lesson!

DD is 16 months and in a toddler bed. She does great! I was just ready for her to get out of bed in the am and come to me instead of crying for me to get her :)

Your poor DD, I hope shes doing better. (((HUGS)))

Both of my first two were in a toddler bed by 20 months (dd fell out, too) but my youngest is 39 months and we just moved her to the toddler bed. She fought it kicking and screaming too. She never tried to climb out, wasn't over the weight limit, and HATES change. This is the second week and last night was the first night that she didn't fuss about her *real bed*!

BTW, I love the sign language, too!

At 18 months dd tried to escape the baby bed but I caught her before any problem. The baby bed converted to a toddler bed and my husband did that so she wouldn't get hurt if she came out. Funny that after she could get out she wouldn't. Even at 45 months and sleeping in a full size bed since she was about 26 months, she still won't get out of bed after she's gone to bed. She calls for mama until I come to her. Go figure.

I have all of you beat!!! My ds (he's 13 now) was about 18 or 19 months old and he kicked and kicked and kicked until the end of the crib broke off and was laying like a sliding board!! Needless to say....we put him in a bed then!!!!!!

Ouch!! This is common around that age. Like you said just take the bumper pads out and lower the mattress to the lowest position possible. :) Kids are so tough.

Our crib converted to a toddler bed and that was so nice! He still had the comfort of his crib but could hop out when he was ready in the morning. His crib was in our mstr bdrm sitting area and he would hop out and come get in bed with us and snuggley wuggley every morning. I miss that!!!

He got a big boy bed for his 3rd bday and moved upstairs. :(

Emma fell out of her crib and it was exactly like what you said...the thump and then screaming. She did this at 10 months! She's still a big climber, but I put her crib on the lowest setting. For now it's okay, but I'll probably move it to a toddler bed by 15 months.

My Uncle Kelvin would stand up in his crib and 'jump' it over towards the door. Then my Grandma would have to shove the door open because the crib would be wedged up against it!
