Air bag kills 3 yr old

Moms View Message Board: Parenting Discussion: Archive July-December 2004: Air bag kills 3 yr old

Opened my newspaper this morning to read of this horrible tragedy - it makes me shudder, knowing that it probably could have been prevented if the mother had taken advantage of (or paid attention to) one of our Safe Kid carseat checks...

Area Police Report

9/11/04 Area police report
By MIKE ANDERSON Tribune-Herald staff writer
A 3-year-old Waco girl has died after being injured by an air bag during a two-vehicle collision.

Jasmine Ramirez died Thursday at Scott & White Hospital in Temple, a day after an accident at the intersection of South Fourth Street and the Interstate 35 access road in Waco, according to a Waco police press release.

Jasmine was strapped into a child safety seat in a 1997 Mitsubishi Galant when the vehicle collided with a 2003 Ford pickup that police say had failed to stop at a red light. The collision caused the Galant's air bags to inflate, injuring the 3-year-old and her mother, 22-year-old driver Krystal Ann Ramirez, the release said. Another child, who was in the back seat, was not hospitalized, police said.

The mother and child were taken to Hillcrest Baptist Medical Center. Ramirez was treated and later released. Jasmine was transferred to Scott & White, where she was pronounced dead Thursday. An autopsy was ordered, the release said.

The Ford's driver, 20-year-old Mark Andrew Cantey of Waco, was ticketed for failing to yield right of-way at a red light, said Waco police spokesman Steve Anderson.

The case remains under investigation, and no charges have been filed in the child's death, Anderson said Friday.

WHY was she in the front seat?! The child who was riding in the back seat was not hospitalized, meaning NOT injured. Kids 12 and under are SAFEST in the back seat. Unfortunately, this mom learned this the hard way. :(

Trina, those were the exact words out of my mouth!

Here in Waco, we have free monthly carseat checks, so the education is out there. We even give away free car seats! The problem is getting people to take advantage of it.

That is so sad.
Why are people so dumb?
I tell you I myself worry about the car
air bag hurting me. I am VERY petite and only 5ft
tall so I have to sit very close to the wheel
I have an airbag on both sides. Any one know the height and weight deal on how close you should sit to one? I have to sit close or I cant reach!

Your chest is supposed to be at least ten inches away from the steering wheel.

Trisa, I have the same paranoia! I'm 5 foot 3 and I have to tilt the car seat back like i'm a low-rider. LOL!!

I am 5'1" and I hate how the seat belt in the passenger seat of my car rides across my neck when I ride and dh is driving. It is scary.

My son rides in the front pass seat of our car, but ours is a 1994 model and has no air bags in the pass side. My mom's is a 1994 also, but a more luxurious model, and has air bags on the pass side and my son does NOT ride in the pass seat of her car.

BTW, I know it is easy for us to berate the mom, but I bet she is saying the same thing to herself. If Only...

I cannot imagine the heartbreak that family is going through right now..............

By Trina~moderator on Sunday, September 12, 2004 - 07:24 am:

Many prayers for the family.

Regardless whether a vehicle has air bags or not kids are safest in the back seat.
