Ds's school is in lockdown!!

Moms View Message Board: Parenting Discussion: Archive July-December 2004: Ds's school is in lockdown!!
By Debbie on Wednesday, September 8, 2004 - 02:25 pm:

There are two armed men who hijacked a car in Chicago and dumped it in a small suburb next to where we live. They are now said to be in our small town. They have killed at least one person. I was out shopping this morning and didn't know anything about it. Duh, no wonder there were so many police cars around and helicopters hoovering over the area. I went to pick up my youngest from preschool and found out about the lock down. He is at the same school as my oldest. So, I am sitting here nerviously waiting to pick up my oldest ds. My youngest ds and I are locked in the house. Our news stations are out of Chicago(no real local news) and there was no mention of it on the afternoon news, so I don't know if they have been caught or not. I have no idea what it is going to be like when I pick ds up. It was a mess when I picked up my youngest. They had all the parents come into the classroom and find their child. and then we were all released outside.

I hope they catch them soon. I hate sitting here worrying!!

Is it the carjacking in the Lakeview area? Something came out recently through the Chicago Tribune website. I wasn't sure if that was the same thing - the shooting victim is in the hospital, from what I read, having been shot in the side of the head.

One Suspect Nabbed

It looks like they got one of the men and are still searching for the other, according to the Trib.

Oh, also, the shooting victim was just grazed on the side of the head, so he should be okay.

It was such a mess when I went to pick up ds. I am glad I left early. All children that walk or ride the bus had to be picked up by a parent, so it was crazy. It is a small school - 350 students, but what a nightmare. They had several policeman there and they kept the students inside until a parent drove up, then they were escorted out by a teacher.

Yes, they did catch one man this morning. They just called off the search for the other. However, they are still hoping to find him since they believe he is armed and dangerous. I first heard that they had killed the man in the carjacking, but just heard on the news that he is already home, just a graze, like Dawn said. Thank God.

I hope they catch the other one soon. For now, we are playing inside. I am really pleased how ds's school handled the situation. They told the students they were practicing emergency drills, so they didn't know what was going on. Ds was really upset that he had to eat lunch in his classroom and that there was no recess!! The priorities of a 1st grader.

OMGosh! What a scary time! Too funny about recess. Atleast no emotional scars! LOL!:)

By Audreyj on Wednesday, September 8, 2004 - 06:26 pm:

I am so sorry you had to go through this but it sounds like the school handled it well. And it sounds like you are a very brave woman, holding it together for your kids. Please keep us updated. AJ

My kids had a lockdown last week. A convict from a work crew had taken off. It was scary and the kids were shaken up but sooo excited about the "maniac". LOL

Glad to hear your dks are safe.
