What diaper rash treatment do you swear by??

Moms View Message Board: Parenting Discussion: Archive July-December 2004: What diaper rash treatment do you swear by??
By Boxzgrl on Thursday, September 2, 2004 - 12:09 pm:

DD has been getting a bad case of diaper rash lately and I cant seem toi fully get rid of it before it flares up again. I know its because shes has frequent loose stools and I change her diaper pretty frequently but it wont go away. I normally use Balmex and its gone within a few hours but thats not helping. I tried something I searched last night which was making a paste with Balmex and corn starch but I was out of corn starch so I used baby powder that has corn starch in it. It helped a bit more but not as well as i'd hoped.

Any ideas??

By Kolbysmom on Thursday, September 2, 2004 - 12:15 pm:

I use plan Emu oil. I just put a little on a cotton ball. It works for us really well. We have a small bottle of it and it has lasted us well over a year.

By Melanie on Thursday, September 2, 2004 - 12:23 pm:

The only rash treatment that would work on dd was A+D Ointment. We tried Desitin, Balmex, and a few others and they wouldn't do a thing for her.

Good luck!

By Emily7 on Thursday, September 2, 2004 - 12:25 pm:

I use the A & D cream. If it real bad I use a Mylanta & corn starch mixture. If that doesn't work I use a little Nystatin cream that I have left over from a diaper rash that was caused from thrush.
I have heard that using baby powder in the diaper can cause UTI's for the baby, not sure if it is true or not.

By Boxzgrl on Thursday, September 2, 2004 - 12:44 pm:

you're right Emily. Its known for causing UTIs in girls. But this is the 2nd time i've ever used it on DD since she was born. And I mix it with the Balmex to make it pasty before putting it on her.

Thanks for the advice so far. Any more? :)

By Kittycat_26 on Thursday, September 2, 2004 - 12:58 pm:

I love A&D ointment. It was kinda pricey compared to some of the other cremes around but it lasts forever since you only need to use a small amount.

By Emdee on Thursday, September 2, 2004 - 01:09 pm:

There is something at wal-mart in the pharmacy (over the counter, though) called Super-Duper Diaper Doo that is kind of like a vaseline texture. It worked great on dd until she started getting allergic to it--so far we haven't found anything for her that doesn't make her rashes worse! I had to ask for it since it was kept behind the counter here. Good luck--it is hard to watch them hurt and you can't make it better! My dd will just scream when hers flares up.

By Jelygu on Thursday, September 2, 2004 - 01:13 pm:

Boudreaux butt paste!!!
I know this sounds silly, but it really works. It is kind of hard to find, but I get it at Wal-mart. It is in the baby section, but not with the other diaper rash ointments. You just kinda have to look around. This stuff is a miracle cure, it works on acne, chapped lips, fever blisters, minor burns, all kinds of ailments.

By Sunny on Thursday, September 2, 2004 - 02:10 pm:

Caldesene Medicated powder

By Tink on Thursday, September 2, 2004 - 04:12 pm:

I used A&D ointment, not the thick creamy version, the vaseline type. I also used the Nystatin ointment for my ds who always had loose stools. The one other thing that would help my dd is tea tree oil. It smells terrible and seemed to sting when it went on but it would clear it up in a matter of hours and keep it clear. Have you tried changing brands of diapers? My friend swore that Huggies caused her son to have diaper rash but he didn't have it with other brands. It might be worth a try if you haven't already done it. {{{Melissa and Kaitlyn}}}

Boudreaux Butt Paste!!!
This stuff is A-W-E-S-O-M-E!!!!!!!!!

By Dawnk777 on Thursday, September 2, 2004 - 04:36 pm:

I used A&D ointment and sometimes had to go to the doctor to get some Nystatin cream. A lot of those diaper rashes seemed to be "yeasty!"

By Coopaveryben on Thursday, September 2, 2004 - 05:04 pm:

If it is bad I use VAgasil, yes vagasil. I put a small amount(enough to coat it) on at bedtime and in the morning it is gone. It works great and eases the pain. I wouldn't put a lot on or use it all the time but I tried EVERYTHING one summer and I saw that sitting in the drawer and thought, WHy not? and it works great. I also found out a lot of other people use it for their kids.

By Emdee on Thursday, September 2, 2004 - 05:07 pm:

By the way, my dd has had alot of loose diapers over the times, and when they were really bad the ped. suggested getting some acidopholus (sp?) sprinkles and putting it in her food. It does something like replace the good bacteria in their stomach--can be used for any age. It isn't by prescription, but I did have to ask the pharmacist for it since they kept it behind the counter. I just sprinkled a little on her food everyday and it worked to clear up the diapers.

By Boxzgrl on Thursday, September 2, 2004 - 05:44 pm:

Tink - I actually use Huggies Supreme diapers on her. When she was born I used cheap ones and she flared up all the time and when I switched to Huggies she never did or very rarely so I know its not the diaper.

I heard about Vagasil working, maybe i'll try that. :) Thanks everyone!

By Karen~moderator on Thursday, September 2, 2004 - 05:55 pm:

I always used Desitin and it worked for us, but younger moms I know (well, younger than *me*!) swear by Boudreaux's Butt Paste.

By Mrsheidi on Thursday, September 2, 2004 - 06:00 pm:

I agree...Boudreaux Butt paste!

By Colette on Thursday, September 2, 2004 - 06:14 pm:

Caldesene medicated powder. My youngest came home from the hospital with a wicked diaper rash - it was bleeding! The only stuff the made it go away was the caldesene.

By Amy~moderator on Thursday, September 2, 2004 - 06:43 pm:

BOUDREAUX'S BUTT PASTE all the way! It is THE ONLY diaper rash cream we use. It has worked like a miracle for all three of my boys. It is the answer - I promise you!

By Boxzgrl on Thursday, September 2, 2004 - 07:04 pm:

Okay so where do I get this *butt paste* LOL!?

By Emily7 on Thursday, September 2, 2004 - 08:03 pm:

A few posts up Jennifer says Wal-Mart, but you have to look hard for it in the baby section.

By Dana on Thursday, September 2, 2004 - 09:37 pm:

A&D has always worked in our house.

By Rayanne on Thursday, September 2, 2004 - 09:38 pm:

I have only found it at Wal-Mart.
Target might have it.

By Boxzgrl on Thursday, September 2, 2004 - 10:25 pm:

Well were off to Walmart now since my route of treatment isnt working and shes starting to blister. Cant let her go to bed like that! Thanks for the grerat advice!

By Boxzgrl on Thursday, September 2, 2004 - 11:54 pm:

Well I couldnt find the Butt paste so I just bought both A&D and Vagasil so if one doesnt work I have another. WEll see how shes doing in the morning.

Goodnight Ladies! :)

By Christylee on Friday, September 3, 2004 - 12:39 pm:

I hope she's better by now... I always used A&D and it did the trick. Also a bare hiney works wonders, letting just the air hit her works well.

I've seen the Butt paste on an end display at our walmart just recently.

By Emily7 on Friday, September 3, 2004 - 01:00 pm:

How is the diaper rash this morning?

By Rayanne on Friday, September 3, 2004 - 01:44 pm:

How is Kaitlyn doing Melissa?

By Cybermommyx4 on Friday, September 3, 2004 - 01:45 pm:

I always used an anti-fungal cream (in case it was yeast) and then COAT her with Vaseline....I also love Desitin, etc., but it is harder to clean those off (as they are "pasty") and rubbing to get pasty stuff off can irritate sensitive skin. The vaseline keeps urine and poop AWAY from the skin, and allows it to heal - it is also very easy to wipe off ;) I tried everything on the market with my four kids, and the above advice actually came from MIL. I didn't believe it could work, of course, but had nothing to lose. 24 hours later, I was a believer! Good luck... :)

By Lauram on Friday, September 3, 2004 - 02:44 pm:

I always alternated between A and D and Desitin. I also kept them naked for as long as I could stand it (go outside if it's nice!) That REALLY helps. Also using washcloths instead of baby wipes really helps. The stuff for the stomach is called lactic acodopholis or something close to that (sounding not spelling)

By Insaneusmcwife on Friday, September 3, 2004 - 05:07 pm:

Hey Melissa, The pharmacy on base should have a tripple diaper cream that you can just pick up. I don't believe you need a rx but call just to make sure. I always just used baby powder with cornstarch and it worked great. I was never into the creams by my friend that has 4 kids and one on the way any minute swears by that tripple cream.

By Boxzgrl on Friday, September 3, 2004 - 05:15 pm:

Thanks Kristie, if shes not showing great improvement, i'll pick it up.

It looks better today. The redness is clearing up but she still has the blister. The blister itself is clearing up too but still there. I've been switching between both the A&D and Vagasil. I just want this to go away.

I'm kinda wondering if its her baby wipes. I've always used Pampers or Huggies Newborn wipes since she always had very sensitive skin as a baby but I recently thought about trying Walmarts brand. Everytime I wipe her with the wipes she says "Oww.. Oww.." Maybe i'll throw away the rest of the box and go back to the better stuff.

By Emily7 on Friday, September 3, 2004 - 05:37 pm:

Don't throw the box away, they are great for removing make up & a quick cleanup for small spills.
I am glad that it is getting better.

By Insaneusmcwife on Friday, September 3, 2004 - 05:56 pm:

Ya, I would go back to using what she is used too. I had a coupon for the luvs diapers and wipes and bought them both for Alli when she was about 6 months and she instantly got a horrible rash. I switched her back to Huggies and it went away. That could very well be what is causing it. Poor baby... I saw that picture you posted...SHE IS HUGE! I almost didn't recognize her.

By Coopaveryben on Saturday, September 4, 2004 - 02:19 pm:

Baby Wipes that have any fragrance immediately have caused ALL my boys to have a horrible red rash. When it happens I use paper towels and water for a few days and then I make sure I get the wipes that are fragrance free.

By Cocoabutter on Saturday, September 4, 2004 - 06:17 pm:

I noticed when my son was a baby 7 years ago :( that Huggies made my son break out. As soon as I switched to Pampers his rash went away without any oinment or anything. But then they had changed the material they used on the outside of the diaper, and my son got a rash immediately. So, I ended up using Luvs, made by Pampers.

So, even tho the diaper brand may make a big difference, there are still rashes to contend with, and I always used Desitin and after a couple of days they always went away.

By Mommyathome on Tuesday, September 7, 2004 - 11:27 am:

We used the *butt paste* too. We got ours at Wal-Mart.
Also, maybe try using the huggies natural wipes. When DS had excema on his bum cheeks we started using the natural wipes. They were much more comfortable for him than the regular huggies.
Maybe try switching diapers? Sometimes that can help too! I know lots of people swear by luvs, but for us they just didn't do the trick. My DK's skin always preferred Huggies.

By Kaye on Tuesday, September 7, 2004 - 01:31 pm:

Another option is a cream called "corona" you get it at petsmart..LOL. My doc reccomended it, it is a lanolin based aniseptic, it cured even the worst of rashes overnight.

By Amecmom on Tuesday, September 7, 2004 - 04:06 pm:

Try switching to talc. If it is yeast, the yeast feed on the cornstarch, making it harder to control.

Suggestions: Change your diaper. My daughter had problems with Pampers and White Cloud but did great with Huggies. And I have friends that were just the opposite.

I loved Balmex. Always did the trick. Plain Aquaphor ointment is also good.

Third suggestion requires a doctor's prescription and a compounding drug store. I am a pharmacist and this is good stuff. We call it 'Happy Hiney cream. It has Aquaphor oint 52 gm and 5 carafate tabs. The tabs are crushed smooth, add a little water, then mixed with the Aquaphor. I have made it so many times for so many people that think it is wonderful. If nothing else works, take this to your pediatrician and get a prescription. You will need to take the script to a small localy owned drug store probably. Most chains won't take the time to do it.
Good luck.

Just an FYI. I was at Target this past weekend and they also have the butt paste. It is just in the baby section with the Desitin and other cremes. Pretty much out in the open.

By Hdelfuego on Wednesday, September 8, 2004 - 08:30 am:

I haven't heard anyone mention aquaphor. My peditrician recommended it. It's not with the other diaper rash stuff. It's usually by the hand cremes. Its made by Eucerine. My daughter has extremely sensitive skin. We used to have to blow dry her bottom with a hair dryer on the cool setting, but now we pat her dry with a kleenex after wiping her with huggies wipes. Then if she doesn't have a rash (it's seldom now) we put vaseline on her. If she does have a rash we put aquaphor and it always clears up overnight. All of my friends swear by it now!
Good luck. I hate diaper rashes.

By Unschoolmom on Wednesday, September 8, 2004 - 05:59 pm:

I saw someone mention they had a hard time wiping off Desitin...I'm assuming it's a thick, white zinc kind of cream? I used to just put a bit of baby oil on a face cloth and wipe down a baby's bum. It comes off very easily that way. My fav. cream for diaper rash was Penaten but I think it's an english product we can get in Canada and I'm not sure if it's availible in the US. Amazing stuff.

By Fionadeassis on Wednesday, September 8, 2004 - 08:59 pm:

Yup....Penaten is what we use here....and I also use warm water with a few drops of tea tree oil in it......wipes seem to irritate Kiko's bum.

This is website for it and you can buy it here. I just bought more and I got it from Target. Wal-Mart and Walgreens also carries it.
