Thrush still here-HELP!!!!

Moms View Message Board: Parenting Discussion: Archive July-December 2004: Thrush still here-HELP!!!!
By Fionadeassis on Thursday, September 2, 2004 - 10:52 am:

Kiko still has thrush. We just did 2 weeks of nystatin. I boiled pacifiers....went braless....put nystatin on my nipples...everything......I even took acidopholis....

Kiko still has little patches on the inside of his cheeks...

What will the doctor have us do? Another 2 weeks of nystatin?

Is there something else I can do?

In Brasil they just put baking soda on the spots. to them it is not such a big deal.

Should I try Gentian Violet?

I really don't want to go back to the doctor. We often have to wait an hour or so there(it is a walk in clinic).Calgary is very short on doctors and it is hard to find one that will accept new patients..so most people are stuck with clinics(we don't have a car so I really don't want to haul both kids on the bus across town trying to get a family doctor).
I realize that we will probably have to go back, but I wouldn't mind a few days of trying something else....

I would try the Gentian Violet, it stains but should produce results in a few days.
My ped had us do it once a day for 3 days, make sure you coat your nipples as well. Then a week after the last treatment she had us retreat to make sure it was gone. Just use a Q-tip & get all area's of the mouth. I always did it in the evening before bed.
Has it gone down into her diaper area? It may travel there, the nystatin creme works well for that.
Good luck, thrush can be painful so I inagine you aren't getting much sleep.

By Fionadeassis on Thursday, September 2, 2004 - 11:49 am:

Thanks emily..I am going to pick up some gentian violet today.

Do you need a prescription for the nystatin creme?

Can't I put gentian violet on the diaper rash?

It has spread to the diaper. It was bad a few days ago,but I stopped using wipes and am putting tea tree oil in the warm water...it is almost gone, but if I could put something right on it I would.

Why would a doctor prescribe nystatin that costs $15 and takes 2 weeks when gentian costs about $3 and takes a few days?

Just wanted to add that I used Gentian Violet for thrush with great results (daughter's mouth & my nipples). Be prepared for purple...but it does work!

By Emily7 on Thursday, September 2, 2004 - 12:19 pm:

The cream would need to be prescribed by your doctor.
You could try a combination of Mylanta & corn starch for the diaper rash. It work wonders & cools the rash.
I have never tried the gentian violet for a diaper rash, so I am not sure if you can use it there.
The creme is VERY expensive.

By Bobbie~moderatr on Thursday, September 2, 2004 - 11:47 pm:

You can do the mylanta and corn startch that is a good idea and it works well. DR suggested I put the mylanta in the fridge it makes it thicker and you rub it on with a cotton ball and then shake on the corn starch. I would also suggest lotrimin Af (anti fungal, it is in the area for athletes foot). Works wonders. Might be able to find a store generic.

And I would try the gentian violet on his mouth. BUT make sure what you put him in to wear is something you are willing to part with. It ruins everything... BUT it works wonders too...

For thrush that moved to the bum, I diluted acidophilus in distilled water and inserted it with a rectal syringe. It worked within a day or 2. It only had to be done once, because it went right to where it needed to be to clear yeast - the intestines.
You can also use a mixture of monistat or canesten and cortisone cream (the weakest one).

How is everything going. Have you tried the Gentian Violet?

By Fionadeassis on Saturday, September 4, 2004 - 12:22 pm:

Emily7-UGH!!!!

Can't seem to find gentian violet. Maybe in Canada they don't sell it. Today Dh is home so I have the car so I can drive around to a few places.

I spent the day using plain yogurt and probiotics in his mouth.

In Brazil babies get thrush all the time(maybe the heat and damp). They call it 'sapinho'-which means 'little frogs'. To them it is not a big deal at all.The moms mix baking soda and honey(yes I know babies should not eat honey). They apply it to the affected area and it goes away.

It just so happened that some Brazilian friends came over yesterday. One brought her sister who is visiting from Brazil. She is a doctor. She looked at the thrush and said-oh yeah..sapinho...it will go away on it's own...maybe his immune system is a little suppressed....

How can it be a big deal here but not in Brazil?

Hopefully I will find some Gentian Violet today.

Have you asked the pharmacists?
I would be willing to send it to you if we can.
My e-mail address is in my profile.
Interesting about the Brazilian treatment.

By Marcia on Saturday, September 4, 2004 - 10:40 pm:

You can get GV in Canada. You just have to ask the pharmacist, who will put a small amount in a bottle for you.

We are still dealing with Thrush as well...I feel your pain. :) Not only does DD have it but I have it on my boobs. We are both starting to clear up but it seems like it is taking forever! The doctor treated me for a "yeast infection" with oral medication and that is really helping me and my DD is getting some of the medicine through my milk.

By Amecmom on Monday, September 6, 2004 - 11:09 am:

One word of caution. Don't use cornstarch on a yeast rash. The yeast feed on the cornstarch! Use talc or a medicated talc, but cornstarch will help the yeast to grow!
Nystatin cream works well. I used it in conjunction with a hydrocortisone cream and aquaphor (similar to vaseline). Good luck with getting it to go away.

Andi-I was putting nystatin on my boobs(doctor told me to).It was such a hassle because it was sticky. Didn't seem to help. I got thrush in one. My midwife said to use vinegar instead(mixed with a touch of water). It killed that thrush!!Thank God because it really hurt. I use the vinegar all the time. It is way more convenient-I put some on after every feed.

The diaper rash is almost gone(just used tea tree oil in the water and a good barrier type cream-panetin I think it is called.

The thrush in his mouth is definitely almost gone. All I am doing is taking about 5 acidofilous a day,and putting some plain yogurt in Kiko's mouth every hour or so.

We are going to the chiropractor tomorrow. Supposedly that can help. Don't really know why.

Also thrush doesn't have to be a big deal, when my bottle fed baby got thrush we just didn't do anything. But when you are breast feeding it is painful to you, and some children have pain associated with it. The doc as a next step can give you diflucan which works much quicker that anything else. Be careful with the violet, it can burn your babies cheeks, just make sure you dont' over use it.

By Imamommyx4 on Tuesday, September 7, 2004 - 11:15 pm:

I did the Gentian violet with my baby and the nystatin and everything else. A lactation nurse practitioner finally got the doctor to write a script for Diflucan 200 mg daily for a month. And yes I kept nursing. But it helped and she and I both cleared up and enjoyed the rest of the time that she nursed.

By Fionadeassis on Wednesday, September 8, 2004 - 08:56 pm:

I am doing another course of Nystatin......
but I am still doing the acidopholis as well....

fiona(who wouldn't wish thrush on her worst enenmy.....)

By Andi on Thursday, September 9, 2004 - 10:50 am:

We are also on our 2nd round of Nystatin. Good luck and I hope both of us get out of this mess very soon.:)

By Brianna on Saturday, September 11, 2004 - 10:44 pm:

here's a little trick i picked up from my doctor. she said to put Vagisil (u know the over the counter stuff u use when u get a yeast infection) put a dab on ur finger and swab the inside of their mouth. a couple times a day. and also put some on ur nipples too! cleared it right up and i didnt need a prescription either!
takes a few days.

good luck!

By Fionadeassis on Saturday, September 11, 2004 - 10:48 pm:

Vagisil in their mouth? Now I have heard everything LOL !!!!

If round 2 of nystatin doesn't work....I will try the vagisil...I have read here on the boards that it is also good for the yeast diaper rash they get with the thrush....

Now I also have a clogged milk duct...have been massaging and hot water bottling it for 2 days... LOL What a nightmare!!

I may be repeating what someone else has said, but Diflucan worked when nothing else would with my 16 month old dd. She has had it now 4-5 different times (not re-infecting herself) and the Nystatin quit working after the first few times. She had it a few months back and the ped started with Diflucan to clear it up. I think he said he had read a medical article that said it is better to start with Diflucan since the Nystatin sometimes takes multiple times to clear up. Good luck--I know first hand that it is no fun, especially breastfeeding. I was also told to apply Vagasil on my nipples directly after feeding and then wash off before the next. BTW, the genetian violet worked on dd only to have it come right back, so we tried it all as well.

By Brianna on Friday, September 17, 2004 - 01:26 am:

Any luck with the thrush? cleared up at all?
