Work at home with children?

Moms View Message Board: Parenting Discussion: Archive July-December 2004: Work at home with children?

If so, what are their ages and what do you do?

I do, but with a 12 yr old DD so it's not too hard. I have a friend that is doing it with 2 kids, one 18 months and one 7. Yikes!

I sort of work at home. I started with e-bay and then recently was approached by a lady that wanted me to start making my product for her to sell in her store. So, I haven't had too much time to list on e-bay anymore.
My kids are 2, 5 and 6. They are pretty good about letting me work.
I am not on a schedule, just the more I make the more I sell. My kids are in bed by 8pm, so lots of times I will do my paper work/billing after they are in bed.

BTW....how fast do you have to be able to type to be a medical transciptionist? It's not something that I want to get into now, but when all my kids are in school I may be interested. I can type about 75WPM at the moment. If I'm doing a lot of typing though (journal typing or essay type typing) I can get up to just over 80 WPM

I was wondering the same thing, and I type about the same as you, Robin.

The ideal speed for an MT to type is 55-75 wpm. It is said that if someone currently types at 45 wpm then they have a pretty good starting point, with time and practice they can achieve the ideal typing speed.

I work at home, kids ages 11 and8 in school and 4 and 3 months at home still. It's a bit tough some times, but I wouldn't trade it for the world, my company is really too big to be running from my home, but the thought of getting everyone out the door to go to an office, or getting daycare is not appealing. I have a good schedule, and have other moms that help, than I in turn help them.
The hardest part is dealing with phone calls, and I"m on the phone a lot.
