Shaving legs???

Moms View Message Board: Parenting Discussion: Archive July-December 2004: Shaving legs???
By Vicki on Wednesday, August 11, 2004 - 09:55 pm:

At what age did your dd's start shaving their legs? My dd is almost 10 and is going into the 4th grade and a few of her friends have started doing it already!! At first, she didn't mention wanting to do it, but the past couple of weeks that had changed. I am guessing it is because school is getting ready to start. Today she actually called me over to look at her legs and see how hairy they are. I never really noticed before, but they are pretty bad!! LOL We are going out shopping tomorrow and I am thinking about getting her an electric razor and letting her go at it. LOL It does seem young to me, but I should also add that she isn't one to want to do things just because other do normally. She isn't really into fashion or wanting to have the clothes and such that others are wearing, so I am thinking that that this is something that is actually bothering her and it isn't just because others do it that she wants to. What age did you allow it and is this something that I should just go with or is there a reason to not allow it just yet??

My dd was around that age when she wanted to start shaving. I let her use Nair. Now she's 14 and shaves with a razor, but she still draws blood quite often!

I was also about that age. What about getting her that new bladeless razor product, I think it is called Veet. If her hair is pretty long the electric razor might pull a little the forst time.

My 9 and 11 year olds have already shaved their armpits, or I should say I did it for them.
No leg shaving yet. Nicole, 11, asked once, but when I explained what a pain it is, she dropped it. She has a fait amount of hair, so I won't make her put it off much longer. I'll let her bring it up, though.
Try a Venus razor. I think it's pretty hard to cut yourself with it.

My older dd got her period at the age of 11. She was quite hairy under her arms and on her legs. So, that summer, she started shaving her armpits and legs. She has used a razor and shaving cream, but is not using a hair-removal sort of thing, called Veet. (smells just like Nair!) I think she has only cut herself once or twice.

My younger dd is almost 12-1/2 and hasn't needed to shave yet. She also hasn't asked yet, either. I think she can probably get by until next summer! Her legs don't look bad and I have no idea if she has underarm hair or not.

My step daughter started last year when she was 11 and in 5th grade. I haven't noticed too many cuts so I guess she's doing an okay job. I thought it was too young, but it's her legs and I decided with 4 girls that was no longer worth the fight!! :)

Jen started when she was 10 because her legs were really *furry*.

WOW! I can honestly say that I am amazed!! I really thought she was a little young for it!! LOL I say that Veet stuff advertised, but I wondered if it would be a little strong for her! I guess not!! Well, we are heading out shopping in a bit and I guess we will get her some stuff to take care of the hairy legs!! I agree that this isn't one of those things that is worth the fight. I have explained to her that once she starts, she will have to keep it up or she will have wiskers like daddy when he skips shaving!! LOL Thanks for getting letting me know that your girls started this young too!!

DD just started this year (age 12) I use Nair (the 4 minute type) and that's what I let her use. I hate shaving with all the nicks and cuts. She really only needs to do it once a month. The hair on our legs are very thin and blonde.

I wanted to shave when I was ten, but my mom said I couldn't shave until I had to start shaving under my arms so you bet I watched my underarms very closely. I started when I was 11 or 12. It seems like such a big deal when you are that age.

By Bellajoe on Thursday, August 12, 2004 - 05:02 pm:

My dd is only 5, so no shaving for her for a while...although those little Italian girls legs are hairy LOL :).

I think i shaved the first time when i was 10. For some silly reason i just decided to do it one day in the shower...took my sister's razor (eew!) and did it with no soap! OUCH! I don't remember if i cut myself but i did have a lovely razor burn. I didn't know what i was doing. When my big sister saw my legs she decided to teach me what to do!

I don't think 10 is too young. Especially if she is feeling self concious about it.

I was in Jr. High, and I started doing it just because all of my friends were. I really didn't need to. My hairs were so so light and very sparse. But, I've been shaving ever since. Once you start, you can't stop.
My oldest is 6 and she's already started in about shaving her legs. I told her no way!!

By Kaye on Sunday, August 15, 2004 - 07:02 am:

I have a 10 year old and will let her shave when she wants to, I agree it really isn't a big deal. However, in general it seems here everyone feels like once you start you can't stop. Well you can..LOL. I shaved early and then by high school shaved a lot (often a couple times a day due to sports). I now don't shave in the winter, I have hardly any hair and it is very very blond. The initial week of stopping I get the stubble but after that it just grows back like a child's legs. So my advice is if you let her start and it isn't going well, just have her stop till she is more ready, within a couple of weeks it will be like she never shaved.

Well, I have a while before Rylee does this, but I was 11 when I was able to this.

By Andyjoy on Monday, August 16, 2004 - 12:26 am:

I was 11, in 5th grade. My mom shaved my legs for me the first time. I tried Nair, but it's too harsh for my skin.

My best friend had lots of dark leg hair, but her mother wouldn't let her shave until she was 13 or 14 because she equated it with womanhood. The boys teased her mercilessly and made her cry. She dreaded wearing shorts to school but her mother didn't care. If it matters to her at 10, I don't think it's too young. One of my close friends even lets her mature 9-year-old shave her legs.
