Food allergies

By Emdee on Monday, August 9, 2004 - 10:35 pm:

I was curious if anyone had kids with food allergies. I haven't been posting lately, but here is a recap: my 15 month old dd has had alot of problems lately and has been tested extensively (cat scan, bone scan, blood work) and everything came back negative. Last week she started breaking out in red whelps everytime she eats, so there is something going on there. She has also started not eating (which is nothing new for her), but the new thing is she spits out most of what she puts in her mouth. Then if she swallows something she doesn't want she starts to choke and throws it back up. She will swallow some things, just not much. I don't know if this is related to her whelps or if it is just a new trick she has learned. We go for allergy testing tomorrow, but I just wanted some feedback from those who have BTDT before we go. Thanks!!

Glad to hear you're doing allergy testing. It will help to pinpoint possible allergens. Both my kids have severe food allergies that require Epi-pens. DS: tree nuts, and DD: tree nuts and peanuts. DD also tested positive for an egg allergy, although thus far not as sensitive as the nuts.

We learned the hard way with DS (3.5 at the time) when he had an anaphylactic reaction after eating his first pistachio nut. I called 911. Very scary! We had him tested shortly thereafter and his tree nut allergy was confirmed.

We purposely avoided all nuts with DD because the experience with DS scared us silly. When she mysteriously broke out with hives at 4 we decided it was time for allergy testing. She tested positive for tree nuts and peanuts.

A great resource concerning food allergies:
