DS has a fractured toe.... :(

Moms View Message Board: Parenting Discussion: Archive July-December 2004: DS has a fractured toe.... :(
By Palmbchprincess on Sunday, August 1, 2004 - 09:13 am:

I don't know ALL the details yet, because the DKs are at their father's, but my ex called to tell me Shane had fractured his toe yesterday. Since he called me after they left the hospital, I only know that it's a fracture, (don't know which toe) and that he's on TC3 for the pain. He has a follow up with Orthopedics in a couple days, but I get them back in a few hours and have no idea what to do for my poor little boy!! I know he's gonna be in pain for a little while, and I am feeling pretty helpless. Any experience with toddlers and fractures? I really wish I could have gone to meet them at the ER, so I could have gotten a full report from the Dr!! Being his toe, it's just buddy-taped, and we're off to buy him different shoes today so it's supported, but not cramped. :( I just want to cry for him!! TIA!!

Sorry no experience with fractures. It is a helpless feeling when you can't take the pain away for them. Speedy recovery, hang in there! :)

Poor kiddo! I would have wanted to be at the ER, too! No suggestions, other that lots of TLC.

By Ginny~moderator on Sunday, August 1, 2004 - 12:16 pm:

My guess is that what they've done is taped the fractured toe to the toes on either side of it, and all you can do is keep it dry, keep him off it as much as possible, give him the pain meds and take him for the followup appointment. There is just not much else that can be done for a toe with a simple fracture. Poor kid - but these happen so easily. He could just have kicked something or bumped his toe into something that didn't move. Ask your dh about whether you should put ice on it periodically. If so, I would wrap an ice pack in a thin towel so it isn't too cold (don't want to freeze the tissues) and just use it for 15-20 minutes at a time.

You'll have your hands full, I'm sure.

No experience with kids and fractured toes, but I've broken a couple! I broke my left big toe (while pregnant with Randy--tripped chasing Robin!) and it was quite painful. I don't remember them giving me anything, though. They did x-ray it to see if I'd need surgery which I thankfully didn't. They gave me a wooden soled shoe to wear, but it wasn't any more comfortable than my regular shoes. Just staying off it mostly, is what helped. I think I broke my second toe (next to the big on) on my right foot a few years later (walked into a doorway--duh!) but didn't bother going to the doctor for it. Probably should have since every now and then it hurts if I bump it just right. Oh well. Anyway, I hope your little guy is okay and let us know what the doc says. Hugs to you both! :)

I understand wanting to have been there with him. I am not sure how things are between your ex & you, but maybe mention next time to call. Poor little guy.

By Palmbchprincess on Sunday, August 1, 2004 - 10:27 pm:

Well, his whole foot is swollen, and he's going to lose his toe nail. It looks really awful, and he's walking on his heel and swinging that leg, reminds me of a pirate. :( Poor little guy is going to have a follow up at the Ped, and then the ortho. And Emily, things are NOT very civil between ex and I, but I did let him know he is required by our custody agreement to notify me next time. (Please God don't let there be a next time!!!) Thanks for the support everyone!!

Big hugs Crys. I have broken several of my toes. Actually the only thing I have ever broken, knocking on wood... Anyway, It is uncomfortable but they heal fairly quick. Not much they can really do about toes.. More hugs...

How is the little guy this morning? So did you find out what he did? When my middle kid was 2 he sprained his ankle, it swelled big and he just would not/could not stand on it. I had to carry him around for about a week. If I remember right Shane is a big boy too, I feel for you! Hopefully he will be all better with in a couple of days.

By Sunny on Monday, August 2, 2004 - 01:25 pm:

Poor little guy! :( I think I would have been a little irate if I was informed after the fact. I hope he is feeling better and heals quickly.

By Emily7 on Monday, August 2, 2004 - 05:05 pm:

I am sorry things aren't better between you & your ex, I knew a while ago you were having problems. I am glad you told him you expected a call next time, hopefully there won't be.
I know how much a broken toe hurts, I feel so bad for him. As Kaye asked, how did he do it?

By Momaroze on Monday, August 2, 2004 - 07:51 pm:

Hope he is feeling much better too!

By Eve on Tuesday, August 3, 2004 - 08:09 am:

(((Crystal))) How's he doing? Poor kiddo. I have broken a toe on each foot, if you can believe it. It does hurt, but is usually heals quickly. I hope everyone is feeling better!

By Tink on Tuesday, August 3, 2004 - 07:38 pm:

Crystal doesn't have internet access at her new place but I talked to her yesterday and Shane was doing OK. She was told that he tipped the glider over on it. I know she is trying to check in here from a friend's house so I'm sure she'll appreciate the hugs and sympathy from everyone.

By Emily7 on Tuesday, August 3, 2004 - 10:30 pm:

Thank you Cori. I am glad Shane is doing okay. I hope he isn't in to much pain.

By Truestori on Wednesday, August 4, 2004 - 01:22 am:

I hope your little guy is feeling better! :)

By Palmbchprincess on Thursday, August 5, 2004 - 12:18 pm:

Thanks all... a quick update... He had surgery today to remove the nail. He had a laceration under the nail that needed 5 stitches. He's pretty doped up, and groggy right now, relaxing on the couch. Thanks again for all the concerns!!

By Emily7 on Thursday, August 5, 2004 - 12:35 pm:

Crystal I feel so bad for him. What a huge thing for such a little boy to go through.

By Trina~moderator on Thursday, August 5, 2004 - 02:55 pm:

Ouch! What a little trooper. I hope recovery goes well.

By Tink on Thursday, August 5, 2004 - 09:25 pm:

Crystal, sorry I missed you! That really stinks! I'm glad he is ok, let us know how he is doing after the meds wear off.

By Eve on Friday, August 6, 2004 - 09:18 am:

Poor thing! I hope today he is feeling better. Oh Mom, that's got to be tough on you too. ((Hug))
