Chickenpox?

Moms View Message Board: Parenting Discussion: Archive July-December 2004: Chickenpox?

I've noticed the past 3 days my DS has started breaking out with these little blister type things. They almost look like pimples. It first started on the back of his thigh, then his bottom...now he has some on his hands. I'm not sure if this is chickenpox or not. My mom seems to think it is. He's had cold symtoms for the past 5 or 6 days. Does this sound like chickenpox to you?

According to the Portable Pediatrician:

Chicken Pox starts out with pimples that turn into blisters, each on a red patch, often described as a dew drop on a rose petal.

When my ds had chicken pox (or that's what we think it was) my pediatrician asked questions like: has he been really cranky lately? are they itchy? does he have a fever?

The little red spots popped up mostly on his chest and back, none on his legs or arms. They didn't itch him at all. My ped said that it looked like chicken pox to him, told me that if they did start itching put some calamine or caladryl on them. The pharmacist suggested giving him childrens Benedryl allergy if the itching kept him up at night.

Did he have the chicken pox vaccine? I guess if they have the vaccine it is still possible to get a very mild case of the chicken pox.

Thanks for the information. Maybe I should schedule an appointment for tomorrow just to make sure that's what it is. No, he didn't have the vaccine. I really didn't see a point in it because typically it's not anything life-threating.

I appreciate the advice!

BAsed on your description I would think something else. Only because with chicken pox, if you have any doubt, you know for sure within a day or two and you say it has been three. Also typically pox start on the trunk and move up, then spread down. If you have bottom, legs and hand, I would worry about hand foot and mouth. Could be anything though! What did the doc say??
