Fever and croup

Moms View Message Board: Parenting Discussion: Archive July-December 2004: Fever and croup
By Emdee on Wednesday, July 7, 2004 - 12:04 am:

Well, dd once again has a high fever--this time up to 104.6 (with the forehead thermometer). It may have been that high when I was checking it under her arm since it was up in the high 103's and you have to add a degree, but I don't like seeing the high read-out. We bathed her in cool water and it relieved it some temporarily. I am taking her to the ped tomorrow (it just spiked tonight). She has had a croup like cough and cry since Friday that I thought would go away, but since it hasn't I guess she needs some anti-biotics. This is a good chance for me to go to the ped and discuss the options for all of her fevers and sicknesses. I will let you all know what he says tomorrow.

By Emily7 on Wednesday, July 7, 2004 - 12:14 am:

With a croupy cough & that high of a fever I would actually take her to the ER.

By Tink on Wednesday, July 7, 2004 - 12:24 am:

Does your ped have an after-hours number to call for semi-emergencies? If so, I would call. Because she has a history of these fevers, he may think it's OK to wait until morning. A humidifier, steamy bathroom, or outside night air are great remedies for croupy coughs. Believe me, BTDT! I would definitely ask about options for her fevers. I am so sorry this keeps dragging on for you. It's so hard to feel helpless when your little one is sick!

By Amy~moderator on Wednesday, July 7, 2004 - 01:08 am:

With three boys, I have had to deal with the croup several times. Like Tink suggested, put her in a steamy bathroom or use a humidifier. This always clears it up for us. However, 104 is a very high fever. Anything around 105 can potentially cause brain damage. I would take her to the ER to be on the safe side, not necessarily for the croup, but for the high fever. If you do decide to stay home, set your alarm all night and check on her every couple of hours.

By Emdee on Wednesday, July 7, 2004 - 09:12 am:

Her fever went down last night after it spiked so I decided to keep her home. I debated what to do, but since it went down I felt better about it. I am taking her this afternoon (the earliest I could get) to the ped. She still had 103 this am--poor thing just wants to sleep all the time lately, but at night can't get comfortable enough to sleep for long periods. I pray we get this figured out! Thanks for the comments

By Coopaveryben on Wednesday, July 7, 2004 - 09:51 am:

Mine have never had a fever with the croup and my oldest was in the hospital with it for 3 days one time and 2 days another time. I guess each kid is different.

I hope you all get some relief tonight.

By Lauram on Wednesday, July 7, 2004 - 12:51 pm:

I agree that's very high for a child that young. Ds had that high this winter and was VERY sick for a long time with viral induced asthma. Both my boys get croup. WIth that high a fever with that young a kid, I personally wouldn't be comfortable waiting. How long until your appt? Can you get it moved up? If you INSIST, they have to see you.

By Kittycat_26 on Wednesday, July 7, 2004 - 01:42 pm:

They dont have to see you but they do have to approve an ER visit if they do not see you.

I do agree that this seems to be going on for quite some time and the fevers are pretty high. It's normal for them to go up in the evening and at night but I would think that over a long time that the pediatrician would be more concerned.

Hopefully there are some answers in your very near future.

By Emdee on Wednesday, July 7, 2004 - 02:12 pm:

We go in about an hour. The ped had hospital rounds this am, so he isn't in until after lunch, and with her history I insist that he sees her instead of another ped. She has slept pretty much all day--we will see what they say! I am not comfortable waiting, but I don't know what else to do right now.

By Amy~moderator on Wednesday, July 7, 2004 - 02:36 pm:

I hope all goes well and you and the dr can get this thing figured out!

By Jodes on Wednesday, July 7, 2004 - 06:11 pm:

I am sorry you are going through this yet again with your daughter, I can totally relate though. 104 is a very high temp, however, children can have as high of a temp as 106 without a possibility of brain damage, it's when it goes higher than 106 that it becomes very serious. I know this because my son ran 105 temps every day for about a month when we were trying to figure out what was wrong with him last summer. Luke warm baths and tylenol along with motrin can help, and good luck!

By Emdee on Wednesday, July 7, 2004 - 06:50 pm:

Well, we are back from the ped. and she is now on antibiotics for the time being. He did a strep test and chest xray, both negative. He also ran lots of bloodwork again to see if anything else shows up for the fevers. It will be a few days for results. We have an appt with a specialist Aug. 2, so we just wait until then.

I have been really worried about her today--she just doesn't feel good, has slept ALL day, and is running high 104 temps again, but hopefully tomorrow she will be herself again! I just hate seeing her not herself. Thank you all for all your comments, and I will check back in after her appt with the specialist.

By Amy~moderator on Wednesday, July 7, 2004 - 07:25 pm:

Wow, it seems they would be more concerned about the high, high fevers. I wish they would put a rush on the results for you! ((Hugs))

By Emily7 on Wednesday, July 7, 2004 - 07:34 pm:

I am sorry but I think your ped has dropped the ball on this one. She should have seen a specialist long before now. I would suggest that the next time she has a temp that high you take her to the ER. At least then you will have some sort of a second opinion.

By Lauram on Thursday, July 8, 2004 - 08:15 am:

I agree with Emily. I would absolutely not wait until August 2nd! That is a long way away! Who is going to be monitoring her until then? My kids have had high temps, but have always been REALLY sick when that happened. My son was a little younger than yours (15 mo) and was hospitalized for cellulitus last summer (he had to be put on IV antibiotics), then he was 22 mo and had a very serious virus. I'm just so concerned there is something serious they are not finding! Are you really confident with this pediatrician? Could you at least see someone else for a second opinion until you can get to the specialist?

By Emdee on Thursday, July 8, 2004 - 10:07 am:

Right now we are waiting for the blood work to come back from yesterday, and the ped did say he would do some further testing if certain blood work came back out of whack. But as long as the blood work doesn't show anything and she gets over this for now, then we just wait to see the specialist. If you saw her she really doesn't appear sick until she spikes the fever. It is just that these episodes happen so frequently. I am worried about her, but if I put myself in my peds shoes, I don't know what I would have done differently. This is the second set of blood work they have done (and they tested for many things), and only one test (the sed rate) has ever come back elevated. I should hear something about the blood work tomorrow, so that will relieve some stress then. And, she is starting to feel better today, so that is great!!

By Kittycat_26 on Thursday, July 8, 2004 - 11:25 am:

whoops! Double posting demon strikes again!

By Kittycat_26 on Thursday, July 8, 2004 - 11:25 am:

I think you are doing the right thing, Emdee. It's tough to see your daughter with the high fevers but how much testing do you put her through. Your ped. could have ordered every test in the book from MRI to CT to ordinary blood work to extensive blood work and it still may have shown nothing. Then what do you have? Nothing, you are still back in the same boat you are now. Sometimes slow and steady wins the race.

Hang in there and know that you are in my thoughts. I'm wishing that answers are clear and near.

By Emdee on Thursday, July 8, 2004 - 04:02 pm:

Just an update on what we are doing with dd: Her white blood count was high, but it looks like her fevers are going down so the antibiotics are working. We are scheduled next Tuesday for a Cat Scan of her tummy to rule out any tumors or anything (nothing suspected), and then if that is negative we schedule a bone scan of her body. Her sed rate was elevated (37) again, but from what I have heard that is very non-specific test so it doesn't say much. Anyway, she is doing much better now so I feel better! Thanks

By Emily7 on Thursday, July 8, 2004 - 05:57 pm:

hopefully you are on the way to getting to the bottom of her fevers. has her ped consulted with anyone else?

By Jodes on Friday, July 9, 2004 - 06:10 pm:

Just wanted to say good luck again, glad that things are moving along to help hopefully find some answers. I know what you are going through and it can be very hard and scary. Her sed rate at 37 is high, but not terribly high, so that;s good. I hope you get to the reasons behind all this soon! Take care.

(((hugs)))
Be sure to keep us updated. I will keep my thoughts with you and your little one.

By Amy~moderator on Saturday, July 10, 2004 - 01:27 am:

Emdee, it sounds like things are moving along nicely - I'm so glad. The waiting must be tough. Hang in there :) I will be keeping your dd in my prayers. Let us know how things go.
