Is there a stomach virus?

Moms View Message Board: Parenting Discussion: Archive January-June 2004: Is there a stomach virus?
By Nicosmom on Thursday, June 24, 2004 - 03:36 pm:

Today Nico has not eaten a thing. He's acting very quiet. He doesn't have a temperature but I can tell he's not feeling well. Right now he is sleeping on the floor in the living room. This is how I know he's not feeling well b/c he rarely takes naps. Should I do anything or just let it pass? I feel so bad for him.

By Amecmom on Thursday, June 24, 2004 - 03:48 pm:

Just make sure he drinks - water, diluted fruit juice, if he wants. Any kind of dry toast or waffle or muffin or cereal he may like.

If he's not showing any symptoms, you could try giving him some milk. It may get some protein into him.

My son never had a problem with milk, even when he had a stomach bug. I read that it really does not aggravate the digestive system more than anything else might.

Hope he feels better. Just make sure he stays hydrated.

Ame

I agree with AME, make sure he stays hydrated. That's the most important. Having had a child hospitalized for dehydration, I can tell you that you don't want that to happen.

However, my kids always found milk hard to digest, so I wouldn't push it if he objects. On the other hand, jello is good, and popsicles, sherbert, maybe frozen yogurt (but that is milk, of course) - anything that has lots of liquid in it that he might like. Maybe broth/buillion (sp?), chicken noodle soup, etc. Anything light, easy to digest, and maybe something he thinks of as a treat.

I remember making jello by the quart when my kids were sick, and freezing fruitjuice in popsicle molds (now you can just buy frozen fruit pops).

I think Ame & Ginny gave you great advice. I hope he gets to feeling better.

Thank You. Tonight he mentioned that his throat "doesn't" hurt, which usually means it does. We'll see tomorrow when he has to go to preschool. He did drink a lot today. Thanks again!

Dana, he may start coming down with a lot of different things since he's exposed to so many things at preschool. Keep up on the handwashing! All the liquid is a good idea. My family just got over a really nasty bug and all the kids liked Gatorade in the sports bottles. You might try that. I hope he's feeling better by now.
