Could it be teething?

Moms View Message Board: Parenting Discussion: Archive January-June 2004: Could it be teething?
By Tklinreston on Monday, June 14, 2004 - 12:35 pm:

My ds who is 16 months old has had a high fever (around 101) since Saturday afternoon and is absolutely miserable.. for the past two days he will not eat a bite, and is crying and fussy continually, he won't swallow his saliva and is drooling excessively. It sounds like teething to me but my first ds never went through this. He's sooo miserable and tylenol or motrin doesn't seem to help. What do you think? My parents are taking him to the doctor as I type this but just couldn't wait for your inputs. Thanks.

He sounds sick to me. As far as I know, there is no such thing as a "teething fever." I believe that's an old wives tale.

By Monicamomof3 on Monday, June 14, 2004 - 12:54 pm:

The fever sounds too high for teething. My kids ran about a 99 fever with almost every single tooth. The drooling may just be because it is hard for him to swallow. Hope he gets better soon!

I would take him to the Doctor. Generally mine have just a low grade fever, nothing over a hundred. I bet he has strep or something like that. Please let us know, I hope he gets to feeling better.

I just reread what I wrote...sorry you are taking him to the doctor.

By Children03 on Monday, June 14, 2004 - 03:08 pm:

I think that he is sick too. My doctor said that children do not run fevers because of teething. He said fever is present when there is an infection or a virus. My children never got "teething fevers". I know different doctors say different things. He might have a sore throat. If tylenol & motirn are not helping, I would see a doctor.

I'd take him in also, but I just want to add that Jen had the absolute WORST time cutting teeth, and would run temps of 101 or even 102 sometimes when cutting her teeth.

As I wrote above, my parents took him to the doctor this morning. Sorry it took me so long to get back to you but this is the first moment I've had all day. Well... it turns out he has "herpangina" (?) I don't know if I wrote that right. It's a virus where you get sores and ulcers in your mouth and throat. High fever, sores, and sore throat are its main symptoms and it's very very painful. He still won't eat anything and has a hard time swallowing... I can't bear seeing him like this. The dr says it should start getting better in the next couple of days but in the meantime there is really nothing I can do except give him Tylenol (which is not helping all that much). Apparently it's going around where I live (Northern VA) and it's very contagious. I'm very worried about my older ds, who is four. I'm just trying to keep him away from Jordan as much as possible for at least the next couple of days. Anyway, thanks for all of your concerns and I hope all of your dks remain safe from this painful virus.

By Amecmom on Monday, June 14, 2004 - 10:21 pm:

Oh poor baby! I'm sorry. There's nothing worse than a virus. It's so hard to just sit tight and let it run it's course.

Have you tried giving him cold things to suck or chew on? Take a washcloth, soak with drinking water and freeze it. That may help. Ask the Dr. about upping the dose of Motrin - that may help.

I'm surprised there's no anti-viral meds the doc can prescribe (oral acyclovir or something along those lines).

Hang in there.

Thanks for your concern, Ame. He is still not eating solids but seems somewhat less irritated today. We did try everything we could think of but he won't put anything in his mouth. He is getting fluids, alittle bit at a time, throughout the day and judging from his wet diapers appears to be getting enough. His doc won't prescribe anything for now and says he should be eating by tomorrow. Keeping my fingers crossed. Again, thanks for your concern.

Jordan still will not eat solid food. He had some cheerios today and few spoons of yogurt. It's been 4 full days since he's eaten. He is drinking milk and some pedialyte. The dr says not to worry as long as he's drinking enough fluid but it's now going on 5 days and his ribs are sticking out.. Is this really ok? How long has any of your dks gone w/o eating solids? Thanks. PS. We've tried feeding him everything you can imagine.. from ice cream to all kinds of soup...

My son went 9 days without solids when he had pneumonia at age 3. I freaked out too but the dr. told me the same thing about getting enough fluids. He lost about 6 pounds but regained them within a few days of regular eating again. Keep offering what you can but he will eat when he's ready.

My youngest goes on hunger strikes everytime he gets sick. He is a tiny thing and it always stresses me, but he does always eat again. Keep offering the food. Also make sure your liquid choices are good choices, no juice, use gatorade, instead of milk try pediasure or drinkable yogurt. And mostly don't force the issue, he will eat.

Tonight, my ds is doing much better tonight. He actually ate quite alot of watermelon and some chicken soup. I'm so relieved. Thanks, guys.
