My ds size

Moms View Message Board: Parenting Discussion: Archive January-June 2004: My ds size
By Emily7 on Friday, June 11, 2004 - 06:22 pm:

I was in the store the other day & a lady walked up to me to ask how old my kids were. When I told her my ds was 2 she commented how small he is. I get this so much, I know he is thin, but I thought his height was normal. I just let it go, but it keeps bugging me. He is 34.5 inches tall & 25 pounds, he is now 27 months old. My in-laws are very big people, my dh is 6'9", they keep saying how he certainly doesn't take after their side. I am only 5'5"(well 5'4.5"), so I am average height, aren't I???? Give the kid a break he had a rough start-thats what I should just say.
I am sorry, I spend so much time worring about his weight, that stupid comments bug me.
I feel better, because the entire time I was typing I was thinking things I couldn't type here.

I wouldn't worry about it... everyone is different and thats what makes us all special!!!!! :) :) :)

Don't worry about it... Shane is big, pushing 30 lbs., but Maddie is much smaller. The doctors aren't concerned, but Maddie has only gained 3 or 4 lbs between 12 and 24 months. Some kids are just smaller than others!!

Definitely don't worry about it!!! I am getting ready to go home to visit my family. I have an aunt who has a son who is just three months younger than our daughter (both are 3). Her son wears a size 2. My daughter wears a size 6. Two completely different extremes. We both chuckle at the thought of finally seeing them side-by-side. LOL. Both are healthy, active kids. They are just growing at different rates.

Kids are so different, my nephew is not even 4 and my dd is 6.5 he out weighs her by 5 pounds!
Have you asked your Ped what he/she thinks? Knowing that your ds is growing normally according to his Dr. would definately help, even if the've said it's fine ask again to make you feel better.

Emily, I can relate to every thing you just said! My ds was a HUGE baby, he had so many rolls. Now he's 3 and just a few weeks ago a lady said, he's tiny! This has been a huge concern of mine since he was about 2. It just nags and nags at me. That's how I joined this site in the first place, to ask about eating habits. His doctor thinks he is the perfect size, but sometimes I can't help but think she is just telling me that. I know he is not small though. The only thing that she mentioned was that he was a tiny bit under average in height, he has shorter legs..i've noticed. My brother was the same way as a toddler, now he's 6'1". I'm so glad I can relate to someone!! :) BTW, he wears 3T or 4T, so I know he's fine.

Emily, I can also relate. I have a 6 year old daughter that looks like she should be 4 or so. She is small. most 6 year olds tower over her. she still can wear 3t clothing. Her little sister will be 3 in July and they can wear each others clothes. When she would go in for her well baby check ups. She was way below average on size she was and still is tiny. The only thing that grows on her is her mouth.lol she is a little lippy

Thank you all for your words of encouragment. His doctor says that as long as he is on the charts that is all that matters. I have to take him to see her on Monday to discuss his next surgery & his little nose stuffing incident. I am going to see what she says about putting him on pedia-sure or something simular.
Marie my ds has a nice mouth on him as well.

My youngest is the same size as the middle, I always have to hear how big he is and how little the other is or Are they twins?

Everyone loves to see little kids and can't help but to comment. I wouldn't worry about it.

At the school where I work, kids are all different sizes, from a tiny little kindergartener to a tall 5th grader. In each grade there is quite the variety of sizes. I wouldn't worry about it.

I don't understand why people think it is their business to comment on the size of other people's kids. We had the same thing with DD. She is 3 1/2 and still wears size 3T. The problem? Most of the people that say anything have 3 yr. olds wearing 4T and 5T. I am glad my daugther is petite. Maybe she won't have my weight troubles when she gets older. I think my family is just small b/c my sister's DS is 23 months and doesn't weigh quite 20 lbs. yet. My sis has been so worried about his lack of growth that she has had him tested for every disease known to man. Why is she obsessed? Because other people make her that way by commenting on it. Heck, she is only 4'10"...what do people expect.

When I asked my ped. about it, he got a troubled look on his face and said the next time someone says something to you, you could always say, "well your nose isn't exactly proportionate to your body now is it?" He was just kidding, but his point was clear...you would never do that to another person, so why do it to kids?

Don't worry about it...especially with the obesity problem in our country right now...

Don't stress it!!
I have a 4 year old and a 6 year old that are the EXACT same height and EXACT same weight. (how weird is that?!) People think they are twins.
So, either my oldest is "small" for her age, or my 4 year old is "big" for her age. I figure it will all work out in the end.
