What should an 18 month old be doing?

Moms View Message Board: Parenting Discussion: Archive January-June 2004: What should an 18 month old be doing?
By Natesmom on Friday, June 4, 2004 - 02:15 pm:

Nathaniel is just about 18 months. I was wondering what he should be doing at this age. Like talking, ect... I worry because he is never around kids. No family members have kids and he does not go to daycare. When he does get around kids he really likes it but dosen't really like to play with them just by himself. He says lots and lots of words. He says about 2 sentences. He understands commands and know what things are like where his eyes, nose, hair, teeth, ect. I just want to know what other 18 month olds are like. Any advice????

Sounds normal to me. The book "What To Expect the Toddler Years" is helpful. BabyCenter.com also has lots of info concerning development. HTH :)

It does sound very normal. Why don't you try a playgroup with him? Definitely checkout babycenter.com and babyzone.com They are very helpful sites regarding milestones, etc. Good luck, and don't worry - he sounds right on track! :)

I agree he sounds right on target to me! Definitely look into a playgroup- or start your own!

Ditto, the others. Most toddlers play alongside and not with other kids, but it's great for them to see and watch what other kids are doing.

Sounds to me like he is on track. I can say that my son benefitted a great amount from a playgroup. I started going to them when he was about 1 then I ended up starting my own and had a very successful one for about a year or more.

If you're interested in starting your own email me and I'll send you some links that have some great ideas. I even have a book I can send you if you are going to start your own, it helped me alot. My email address is clw@houston.rr.com

I agree right on track, children at this age generally do not play with other children yet. They usually play alongside, each doing their own thing.

Erin, you know Nico still doesn't play a whole lot with other kids. Nathan seems fine. Oh wait, I haven't seen him since December though!

my 7 y/o is the only way that plays with other kids
my2.5 y/o does not go to daycare playgroups or anything ... there is a 3 y/o next door that he will play with for about 10 min then done :)
he will play with sissy & her friends though for hours !

Thanks everyone for your feedback. It really helps. Christylee I will email you because I have thought before about starting a playgroup since there aren't that many in Fresno where I live.
