I have a 9 year old daughter that says it burns when she pees. THis may be dumb question should I make her an appointment or should I just get her some cranberry juice. Do they have medicine for this or do you think she is to young.

By Trina~moderator on Wednesday, April 28, 2004 - 05:34 pm:

Definitely take her to the doctor. Cranberry juice will not clear up an infection. She's not too young to get a UTI. Hope she's feeling better soon!

Take her to the doctor! UTIs can get very uncomfortable!

By Ginny~moderator on Wednesday, April 28, 2004 - 07:23 pm:

Oh, please take her to the doctor. She may well have a UTI. They are so uncomfortable (having had at least 8 in the past 3 years) and so easily managed with antibiotics. In the meantime, yes, cranberry juice and lots and lots of water. The water dilutes her urine so it is less burning, and helps a bit with reducing the urgency. One of the really frustrating things with UTIs is always having to go and not going much -and the burning.

My last one I started with symptoms on Saturday. Was thinking I would call the doctor on Monday. I had to work at my urgent care clinic on that Sunday. I start at 10:45. By noon, I was talking to the doctor who was working with us, getting my urine sample and taking it to the lab. So, I would put a patient in a room, go to the bathroom, put a patient in a room, go to the bathroom. It was awful. Then the lab results came back and UTI was obvious. So, he gave me antibiotic samples and a script for Pyridium. The pyridium turns your urine orange, but blessedly stops the burning. It was a bad afternoon. I don't want to do that again anytime soon.

Definitely, take her to the Dr. You can get OTC pyridium, that will help with the burning. Just check with the pharmacist due to her age. Sometimes that stuff upsets your stomach. Cranberry juice helps. You can take cranberry pills or capsules to help prevent UTIs - I take them daily.

One of my girls was hospitalized for a UTI at 18 months. She had to go through a whole battery of tests, to make sure she didn't have kidney reflux, etc. Poor thing. I've been through all of that, too, and it's crappy. The pain of a UTI is horrible!!! I go to the doc the second I feel the least bit of burning.
I hope she feels better quickly!

It is not a fun thing to have. Talk to her & make sure she wiping correctly. She also needs to start drinking plenty of clear liquids. I agree with everyone she needs to go to the Doctor.

Any news today?

No uti she isn't burning anymore while she goes. The Dr. Said that her urine was strong but no infection. He told her to drink alot of water. and said that if she complains anymore to bring her back in. Yesterday she had a track meet and she said that she only had chocolate milk to drink all day. I was thinking maybe she was getting a little dehidrated. So from now on when she has meets she is taking her own water bottle. She said yesterday that they were charging them for drinks and I forgot to send her money.(plus she couldn't find a water fountian.)

Burning can be caused by raw skin. If she doesn't rinse well after soaping up (soap can burn the skin making it raw). If she takes a bubble bath with too much bubble bath in the water. If she doesn't wipe well, change her underwear or shower enough. Change in bath soap or laundry detergent. All these things and many more things can cause the skin to become raw and cause a burning during urination. Make sure she understands all of those things. And make sure she understand she needs to drink plenty of fluids. And I am glad it isn't a UTI. They can be very painful as stated above.
