Need help - Ds has weak stomach

Moms View Message Board: Parenting Discussion: Archive January-June 2004: Need help - Ds has weak stomach
By Debbie on Sunday, April 4, 2004 - 04:14 pm:

My youngest ds is 3-1/2. He has always had a weak stomach. When he smells or sees anything yucky, he always gags and sometimes throws up.

Well, we decided it was time to potty train this week. He did great with pee. In fact, after one day, he was going all on his own. He has been for about 4 days. He also had a bm on the potty the first few days. In the beginning, he was really freaked out about smelling it or seeing it, so I had him go and then flush right away. He did great. Well, yesterday he didn't flush and saw it in the potty and then threw up!!! Now, he doesn't want anything to do with having a bm on the potty. I am not sure what to do. We have been reassuring him that it is okay. He just gets so upset about throwing up. He told me last night that he wished he was Jordan(his brother) because he doesn't throw up when he sees yucky stuff. I feel so bad for him. Does anyone have any suggestions?? He is so proud of himself and loves wearing underwear. I just don't want him holding it or having accidents. Any input would be great.

WOW! I think this is something to discuss with your doc. Sounds like a lot of stress and anxiety for both of you. I wonder if there are meds that can help, or supplements that would help. Good luck!

Some kids whose senses take in things in a very intense manner - smells effect them more than typical, loud noises freak them out, some materials feel really weird on their skin - benefit from some Occupational Therapy.

Or, if this is an isolated thing, this could just be one of those things were you go, This Too Shall Pass....

I'm sorry this is upsetting him so much.

Some kids really view a BM as part of themselves and seeing it in the potty they take pride in it or in his case maybe a fear? Sounds far fetched but heck it's worth a try. Try explaining it to him, keep it on a level he can understand ...When you eat your body uses the food to keep you strong and healthy what it can't use...you get the idea.

Good Luck!

Well, today is a new day. I am just going to keep him in underwear and be patient this week. If things don't get better then I am going to call his doctor.

Chrissy, this morning I had the talk about what a bm is. I asked him if he knew what it was. He said it was "just plain yucky". LOL. I told him that it was just food his body didn't need. He looked at me like I was crazy and said really?? I said yup, then he smiled. Who knows maybe that will work. He is very sensitive to smells. That is really it, nothing else bothers him. I think he comes by it honestly. Dh is the same way with smells. You should have seen him change a dirty diaper.

Funny, good luck. Try spraying some air freshner he likes before he goes???

OH No! I'm so sorry. I have no advice, but lots of sympathy to offer.
Try waiting a few weeks - no mention of the potty - and then start training again. This time make sure you get him off and out before he sees anything.
Hey, I guess I did have some advice after all.
Didn't think so when I started this post.
Good luck.

my dd was the same way!!!!!! she gagged ALL the time and threw up sometimes too! Here is what i did.. i took her to the store and ket her pick a scented air spray that she liked and told her she could spray it anytime she was in the bathroom if she didn't like the smell. She loved that!! she never gagged again!

Ohhhh, I'm so sorry. The poor little guy. :( You would think that a dirty diaper would get to him more than going in the potty. Does he have a problem w/that? Maybe take your time changing the dirty diapers and reassure him that it would be much less smelly if he went on the potty. He could "go" and then hurry and flush it away before even getting off.

BTW....I LOVE the air freshener idea. I bet he would enjoy that.

Kenna, it is good to know he is not the only one. I will definitely have to do the air freshener. In fact, we are going to the store tomorrow so I will have him pick some out. He refused to wear anything but underwear today. He ended up going in them. Of course, while I was changing him, he threw up. He then looked at me and said it was worse then going in the potty!! Hopefully, tomorrow will be better.

I have to agree with chrissy. Have the talk, it worked like a charm for me!
