Spring break blues

Moms View Message Board: Parenting Discussion: Archive January-June 2004: Spring break blues

The kids started spring break yesterday. I think i may go crazy! Its only been one day and if here "I'm bored" one more time my dh will have to commit me! I told my daughter that parents are not for entertaining 24-7. I still have stuff to do, i do not get spring break. I asked my dd to help straighten up and she replies "Kids are not supposed to do chores on spring break" UUUGGGHHHH. I am not looking forward to the rest of the week. We do have some stuff planned for the weekend but dh still has to work. My dd wants friends over but i think that would drive me more nuts! I told her she could one night but i am not having a bunch of kids running around all week while dh is at work!
Well anyone still reading.. thanks for letting me vent!

Today is my kids last day of the break. They've been off since March 19th. I have to say, I've really enjoyed it! We went roller skating one day last week, to the zoo last Thursday ( Cheyenne Mt Zoo ) and yesterday we went to the Manitou Cliff Dwellings ( Manitou Cliff Dwellings ) and drove home through Garden of the Gods ( Garden of the Gods ). We also went to the park several days and just enjoyed the nice weather we've had the past couple weeks by going through lots of bubbles and sidewalk chalk. I think this is the first spring break I had actually looked forward to and enjoyed. Robin really needed this break from school. Attitude will make a big difference. It did for me! Enjoy this time. Do some things or go some places you don't normally go. Kids are young for such a short time. Mine are in 3rd and 5th grades. I'm not going to have many years left of them actually wanting to go places with me. lol Don't want to sound like I'm preaching to ya, though. I totally understand where you're coming from. {{{{{Keena}}}}} I hope tomorrow and next week are better days. :)

I had a big problem with my son the first two days of spring break....it got better. I am a big fan of friends coming over, they usually play quietly (who I am kidding..Loudly) in his bedroom or outside but noise does not bother me I've gotten used to it. I made my DS a check list of things to do each morning too. I also tried to take them somewhere nothing big, we went to the play place at Chick-fil-a for lunch one day and they played, we went to the zoo one day (it was free on Wednesday's), and to the park...nothing major just a little something to make it special.

When they start school you get a routine going , then when they are out you have to adjust it...it's very difficult. Hope you guys have a good week.

Well spring break has never been too bad but being in a new country and not being able to drive really limits me on what we can do! I think thats what has me down the most!

Cat, Garden of the Gods is one of my favorite places! So beautiful and free too.

We had a week off in February with nothing planned. NEVER again! We have another week off this month, and we're driving down to VA to vist Grandma & Grandpa. :)

Goodness that does make it hard. Perhaps you could plan some crafts and play dates, are there any moms close by you could go somewhere with maybe to the park? Best of Luck.

You could always do what I do. I rattle off a list of ideas (reading, drawing, etc.) and if they don't want to do any of that, I tell them they can help me clean. They usually find something to do real quick! :)

LOL Sunny! I swear that when we give birth a list of things to say that our mothers said to us and their mothers said to them is just downloaded into our memory banks. I can't believe the things I say that I swore I never would when I heard them as a child: Because I said so, Just because, and If you do that one more time...sigh!

My kids always wanted to do stuff for me to "watch." How about one day having your dd plan some kind of show for you and your dh to watch that evening? There could be singing, dancing, a play, a puppet show, interviewing her dolls, whatever! One "BORING" day in desperation I gathered a bunch of household items (pencil, deodorant, spoon, etc.)and had them use them for puppets. It was hilarious!! (Have you ever imagined what a coffee mug would say to deodorant?) I also agree that going out, even for just a bit, even to just run errands or something, is important. Good luck!

well the first monday is over, lol and it was rough, it rained all day so the kids were in! I think i am gona try that household puppet idea though! That has to be funny! My dd has the funniest imagination already!

Well, my kids started their short spring break on Friday and stay home till Tuesday. Their spring break was shortened because our school board did not put any days into the budget for snow (dumb - we live in NJ - it snows). I won't have to listen to "I'm bored" for too many days though.

Cat, how is Cheyenne Mt Zoo since they put in the new Girrafe exibit? I moved from Colo Springs in December so I haven't had a chance to see it. I'll go next time I'm out there, but I heard it was really great how you get to go right up to them and feed them. I'll probably be moving back out there in a couple of years, I miss it so bad! Hey, maybe you could keep me updated!

We had our spring break this winter....they were home for what seemed like forever. So Spring Break consisted of having Good Friday off from school and that was it. Hee Hee! It is nice to know that I am not the only person who hears "I'm bored!" all the time. What's up with that? I would love to be bored!!! Even for just a half hour. DH and I just tell them if they are that bored I am sure we can come up with something for them to do. There are all kinds of things that need to be cleaned in the house....that usually shuts them up. Hope everything worked out, that you still have all of your hair. Can't wait for summer. NOT!

Well I MADE IT!!!!!! We had some fun this weekend as you know since i posted the pics!! But i was SOOOOOOO happy to get my dd off to school, i wanted to throw a party, i didn't but i did do a little dance on her way out, she told me to stop being a dork, LOL. Now time to start preparing for summer!!

By Lauram on Monday, April 12, 2004 - 10:39 am:

I can't wait for our break. Since I work full time- it is SOOOO special to me to be able to spend down-time with my dks. I take my youngest out of daycare and we have lots of fun. We plan little trips (library, park, grocery stroe, dr appts, swimming at the YMCA, playdates, playing in the backyard, etc....) I do the same thing in the summer with them (since I have the summer off). I truly treasure that time and feel so priveleged that I don't have a 2 week vacation kind of a job. My oldest really needs the down time away from school as well. OUr vacation starts next Monday. I CAN"T WAIT!

Meghanne, the giraffe exibit is so cool! It seems like they have soooo many giraffes now. You do get to get up close and personal with them and they even have docets (sp?) there to explaine things about the animals if you have questions. Last summer when they were almost finished with the African Safarah exibit there was a woman there with a giraffe's tail (a real one), showing the bone inside and telling the kids what the giraffe uses it's tail for. Then she asked the boys to pull out a tape measure and stop when they thought that was how long the giraffe's tongue is. They stopped at about 12". She then pulled it out to 18". The boys were just amazed. You can now also "adopt a spot" of a giraffe. They have statues that when you adopt a spot your name goes on a spot and they attach it to the statue. Very cool. Wonder if they'll do that for the whole zoo??? If you make it back this way, let me know. My dh is military, too. He's been in the Air Force for almost 19 years. Only one more year to go! :)
