Cost of used baby clothes

Moms View Message Board: Parenting Discussion: Archive January-June 2004: Cost of used baby clothes
By Kittycat_26 on Monday, February 23, 2004 - 11:42 am:

I got a call this morning from someone who wants to buy all of Timmy's baby clothes from when he was born through 12 months old. I'm not sure what to ask for this amount of clothing.

I have a 26 gallon plastic container full of anything and everything that she would need for the first year of this baby's life. There are onsies, sleepers, outfits, shoes, towels, washclothes, and socks.

Just looking for an idea of what some of you think this would be worth. I had a preemie baby (4.5 pounds) so there are clothes from preemie and up. She had a preemie also (1.5 pounds) so she could use everything.

Thanks for your thoughts on this.

Depends on if this person is a close friend or a stranger who just heard about you....for a friend, I'd either give it to her, or go through it together and let her make an offer. For someone you don't know, go through and add up what you'd get for each item if you sold it at a consignment shop. Onesies usually sell for $1.50 (second hand) so that'd be .75 value to you - one piece stretchy suits usually go for $3-$4, so maybe $1.75 value to you...and so on. Upscale consignment shops can charge a bit more, and a lot depends on the conditon of the item and how much it cost to begin with (is it from Macy's or WalMart, etc) So it sounds like it will take you a while to go through it all. Good luck! :)

See if you can get a buck a piece, I think... Easy at least. or 50 cents a piece for the clothing only. or 75 cents a piece.

Sounds like a big chore to me! I would take out the special items that I would want to keep, and then just say take it all for $20 or something like that. If it were a close friend I'd probably just give it to her. Especially if she's dealing with all the expense of having a baby that was 1.5 pounds.

Definitely take out some special things to save for when Timmy has a baby. My friend had a baby and her mom sent her out a box of clothes from Argentina that had been her baby clothes. Everything was so beautiful and hand made, embroidered(they do incredible hand work there).

I have a box of clothes I saved from when Eliah was a baby. We took them out today so that Eliah could see how small he was when he was born.I almost cried when I found this one yellow sleeper(with chicks on it).He wore it the first time I took him out.

I would just give the clothes away(unless you are strapped for cash).

My baby comes in June and I have yet to find anyone who will give me some old clothes. With Eliah, all the women in my neighbourhood passed all their clothes to the next pregnant woman. I didn't have to buy one thing. In fact,I had about 6 garbage bags full of baby clothes that I didn't want.

Here in Calgary, people don't seem to give baby clothes away. I think I might put up a notice somewhere.......

Thanks for all the help with this. I was sort of thinking along the same lines of coming up with an easy system.

These aren't friends of mine. It's the sister of one of the employees at Timmy's daycare. I agree, if it was a frien, I'd just give it all to them. I've already done that with his preemie clothes.

I have a few items that I've kept but not alot of things.
