Suggestions on meals for a one year old?

Moms View Message Board: Parenting Discussion: Archive January-June 2004: Suggestions on meals for a one year old?
By Tklinreston on Tuesday, February 10, 2004 - 04:55 pm:

My ds will be one years old next week. He has four teeth on the top and two on the bottom. He eats alot of mashed up veggies, pieces of fruits, yogurt, mashed up egg yolks, macaroni and cheese, pasta (to mention a few) and lots of CHEERIOS and for meat, I'm feeding him the Gerber meat because of his lack of teeth. I was just wondering what other moms feed their babies w/o alot of teeth and how they prepare the food, particularly meat.

My kids ate table food exclusively once they turned a year. The only foods I didn't give them were choking hazards (grapes, nuts, hot dogs, etc.). Their gums are pretty hard and they can eat most foods as long as it's cut up in small pieces.

How did you prepare the beef, chicken or pork? Basically any meat that requires chewing?

By Sunny on Tuesday, February 10, 2004 - 05:41 pm:

I didn't do anything special. I prepared dinner and cut up any meat very finely. Ground beef is easy to cut in small pieces, chicken without breading is easy too. Tuna and flounder flake off in small pieces. I basically diced everything into small pieces until their molars started to break through.

I was super paranoid of choking so I used a food grinder until they were about 1. All of the foods you suggested are great for your little one. I had a friend who feed her baby the Gerber naturals with fruit and veggies mixed at that age...

Goldfish crackers were a big hit with my kids. Like cheerios they dissolve really easy. Goodluck.. :)

I used to shred alot of foods too.

cheese
carrots
ham
chicken

This made sure that the bites were small enough but yet it was quick and easy.

Actually I tested some goldfish yesterday to see if I could give it to ds and it seemed alittle hard to me and didn't seem to dissolve really well. I guess I'm being superparanoid. I think I'll try giving it to him today broken in smaller pieces, of course.

I understand the goldfish. I tried with my son also and they really don't dissolve. He chokes on them. I also feed him breadsticks and rice cakes for snacks. They dissolve easy. I feed my son about the same as you do but I also still give him the gerber 3rd stage veg's and meals and the fruit. I'm superparanoid about him not getting enough to eat since I started adding regular whole milk to his formula and have backed off on his formula. It's difficult. I totally underatnd how your feeling.

Now I don't feel so paranoid about the goldfish. I think I'll wait alittle longer on that for a snack. As for the rice cakes, those are great snacks. They sell puff rice treats in Korean grocery stores and they are fabulous. Literally dissolves in your mouth and so yummy. If you ever happen to find yourself in a Korean grocery store (although highly unlikely I'm sure) look for the puff rice cookies. They are the shape and size of a frisbee and are made right on the spot. There are alot of large Asian markets now, which people of all background shop at. They have the freshest fruit and veggies, meat and fish around and they are much cheaper than elsewhere.

Thanks for the suggestion. I'm always looking for something new. I'm sure with our population in Florida we have a Korean market somewhere.
