Need 1st Grade Book Recommendation

Moms View Message Board: Parenting Discussion: Archive January-June 2004: Need 1st Grade Book Recommendation
By Joy~bundles on Saturday, December 20, 2003 - 12:05 am:

I will be reading a story of my choosing to DS's first grade class the first week in January. Each child gets a special week during the school year to share things about themselves with their classmates and are allowed to have their parents come in and read a book to the class.

I'm not really sure what book to bring, though. DS doesn't have a particular favorite, and the books we've been reading together at home are chapter books (for children) that would be way too long to read in class.

I'm completely clueless about which book to bring. Can anyone provide some suggestions - any would be GREATLY appreciated!!! Thanks so much for your help!!! :)

Kevin Henkes -- Many titles. Story parts tend to repeat themselves, but that makes it kind of fun.

Sheila Rae the Brave
Lily's Purple Plastic Purse
Julius, the Baby of the World

Hot Air Henry and various other titles by Mary Calhoun

Siamese cat who has his own voice in the story is always trying to run away from the family and has an adventure while the family is trying to look for him.

Anything by Lois Ehlert

Feathers for Lunch
Rainbow Garden
Snowballs

Stinky Cheeseman and other Fairly Stupid Tales
Jon Sciezka (sounds silly, but the stories are funny! Like fractured fairy tales) My kids loved this book and my who is a librarian brought it home for them once when we visited.

Three Little Wolves and The Big Bad Pig by
Eugene Trivizas (different perspective of the three little pigs - also quite funny!)

I miss reading to my kids! I loved all these books when they were younger.

'Click, Click, Moo! Cows That Type'

Don't know the author but Amazon would tell you. There's a sequel to this, too, that should come up if you do the Amazon search on the above title. You can probably read both.

Also, Amelia Bedelia books.

Oh, I love going in to read to my DK's classes! I've even subbed for our school librarian in the past. Good suggestions above. There are SO many good books out there. Here are a few more ideas...

Anything by Jack Prelutsky. He writes children's poetry.

Jan Brett - The Mitten, The Hat, The Gingerbread Boy

Laura Joffe Numeroff - If You Give a Mouse a Cookie, If You Give a Pig a Pancake, If You Give a Moose a Muffin, If You Take a Mouse to School, etc.. Cute books!

Chris Van Allsburg - Jumanji

Ivan Gantschev - Two Islands. I read this in DS's 1st Gr. class and it lead to a great discussion, although this topic might be a little deep for some kids.

Anything by Eric Carle - The Mixed Up Chameleon, The Very Clumsy Click Beetle, The Greedy Python, The Very Lonely Firefly, etc.

Cloudy With A Chance of Meatballs by Judi Barrett. This is a fun book. :)

Another option is to ask the teacher what subjects they'll be working on at that time. Gail Gibbons does great reference books for kids. The Magic School Bus series is good, too.

I'll post back if I think of anything else. HTH.

A Bad Case of Stripes-David Shannon (wonderful, colorful illustrations!!)

King Bidgood's in the Bathtub-Audrey Wood

The Giving Tree-Shel Silverstein

Any of Dr. Seuss' longer books like "Horton Hears a Who," "The Sneetches," etc.

Anything by Steven Kellogg--"The Mysterious Tadpole," "The Day Jimmy's Boa Ate the Wash"

Sounds like fun. I LOVE children's books!

I just read "Stinky Cheese Man" to my daughters Kindergarten class. It is a huge hit with DD and the class just loved saying "run run run as fast as you can, you can't catch me, I'm the STINKY CHEESE MAN!"

I think you can go to your library over the holidays and speak to the children's librarian. I'm sure she would have tons of suggestions too. I think you and the kids would have the most fun w/ books that are lyerical (sp?). The kids can really get into the rhythm of the book.

There are so many fun books out there. HAVE FUN!!!

I forgot all about Steven Kellogg! I loved him, too!

By Marcia on Saturday, December 20, 2003 - 01:38 pm:

Anything by Robert Munsch. They usually have lots of repetition, and the kids get right into it.

By Lauram on Saturday, December 20, 2003 - 02:53 pm:

I'm reading a book in my ds's first grade that same week. I'm reading The Legend of Befana (or something like that) by Tomie de Paula. They are doing an author study on him and I'm doing it because that is the week it is celebrated in Italy (on Jan6th). I'm dressing up like her and giving the kids candy liek she does in Italy....

By Paulas on Saturday, December 20, 2003 - 05:54 pm:

I agree about the Robert Munsch books. There's lots of repetition and the kids love it when I get into it.

We just read "The Mitten" and the kids really like it.

Another idea. There's a book out "What A Wonderful World". The illustrations are amazing. An idea might be to play Louis Armstrong's version of the song (which the words follow) while turning the pages. Great book

Oh, wonderful!!! Thank you everyone for all the great suggestions!!! Yay!! I'll be heading to the library this week to see which one DS most wants me to read to his class. Thank you so much, Mommies!!! :)

By Kim on Friday, January 2, 2004 - 07:54 am:

Alexander And The Terrible, Horrible, No Good, Very Bad Day

:o) Just in case you need another book soon! Kids like this one.

By Robin on Friday, January 16, 2004 - 04:56 pm:

I read a book in my son's first grade class last year that they really loved...Jimmy Zangwow's Out-Of-This-World Moon Pie Adventure by Tony DiTerlizzi. I brought in a box of scooter pies and drink packs. The kids loved the story and enjoyed the snack! I also read Q Pootle5 by Nick Butterworth another winner!
