Remember how I said "It's never boring at my house"?

Moms View Message Board: Parenting Discussion: Remember how I said "It's never boring at my house"?
By Cat on Monday, September 17, 2007 - 10:57 pm:

Well, it's not. Saturday we almost went to the ER--twice! First Robin sliced his thumb pretty bad. He was carving soap with the neighbor and his kid. After hemming and hawing we decide it's really not that bad and we'll just watch it for infection and put butterfly strips and a band aide on it. About 30 minutes later Randy hobbles in the house. He'd been with a friend at a skate park. Seems one wheel on his board stopped moving and he didn't. He's in pain, but not too much. It's swollen, but not too much. He's walking on it, but having to modify how he walks so it doesn't hurt as much. We figure it's just a sprain and there's nothing the ER could do anyway. So fast forward to this morning and he's still complaining it really hurts and isn't getting any better. I take him to my chiropractor (good friend) who'd offered to take x-rays of it yesterday. She and her husband (another chiropractor) both say they see something, but they're not sure what it is. It just didn't look right, but didn't look like your typical fracture. So off to the ER we go because there's nothing the peds clinic can do for us (no x-ray equipment there). We spend over 3 hours up there and the doc comes in and says they *think* it's broken. He said it could just be a normal growth plate, but with all the pain and swelling they're going to treat it like a break. So they put a splint on it, wrapped it and gave Randy crutches. Randy was NOT a happy camper! He was supposed to test tonight and Wednesday for his jr black belt and he's only got 3 1/2 weeks of football left and now he can't play! We see the ortho surgeon tomorrow so maybe we'll have some more info then. Robin decided to wait until next month to test for his jr black belt since Randy can't test this month (they were both supposed to test this week). I thought that was sweet. Randy hobbling around school on those crutches is going to be interesting. He said, "How am I going to carry my books?" I told him he'd just have to use his backpack and he said they're not allowed to carry their backpacks during the day. I told him they'd make an exception. :) He also has lots of friends that would be more than willing to help him. Now I need to go up and see if he can get his jeans off over that splint! lol

Nope, never boring.

Oh no! I've cut the edge of my thumb twice, while cutting up veggies, in my life! Sheesh, you'd think I'd be more careful. I know the one time, it bled for a long time, but eventually stopped and I didn't need stitches. Mine was more of a surface wound.

Ouch on the sprain/fracture! Poor kid. I think you did the right thing, taking him to the ER, when it was still so painful the next day. Sorry he's going to miss the last 3 wks of football. One of our docs had to go tell a senior football player, from a local high school, that he was going to miss his last game, because he'd fractured his leg. This doctor loves to tell people, "Good news, it's not broken!" He didn't get to, that night.

What a day for you! That really is sweet that your son is waiting to test on his belt too. That's when you really know your kids really do care about each other.

And I just had to laugh when he said they "aren't allowed to wear back packs during the day" Just like a kid to over look the obvious needs

{{{Cat}}} When it rains, it pours, right?? You're right, life is never boring with you.

I messed up my foot in high school, and was on crutches. I got to leave my class 10 minutes before the bell rang, and I got to pick someone to carry my books. That way, I could be at my next class before the halls became a nightmare. They will definitly do something to help him out.

Randy's in a walking boot and he hates it! He says it looks "dorky". lol The doc does believe there's a fracture there and he wants to immobilize it, but doesn't feel it needs a cast since Randy's not in pain and can walk on it. We go back in two weeks for another x-ray and to see if we can take the boot off. He is supposed to take it off and move the ankle around to keep the mobility up, but he doesn't want him walking without it. Randy's still upset about karate and football, but I don't want him hurting it any more so he'll just have to get over it. :) At least he's not in crutches (yeah!) so he can carry his own books. It was so funny because the shirt he wore this morning to the doctor's has someone skateboarding on it and it says, "It don't hurt until the bone shows". They all got a kick out of that! lol

Little bugger will probably still get his friends to carry his books.

LOL that shirt is funny, i bet they got a kick out of it.
I'm glad to hear he's not on the crutches anymore. I remember when someone in middle school or high school was on crutches EVERYONE wanted to help carry their books. Why? Because those 2 got to leave class about 3-5 minutes early because the are slower and it would take them longer to get to the next period class. :)

Ugh, I don't blame Randy from not wanting to wear the boot. They are pretty ugly. That said, my dh was supposed to wear one and didn't so the bone fragment rotated and it required surgery to heal. I hope he's feeling better soon and that you get to the eye of the storm and have the chance to experience calm for a little while!

When I was 15, I don't remember getting to leave class early, when I was on crutches! LOL! I can't remember if friends carried my books, or if I just used my backpack (1975!). I just know by the end of six weeks, I was pretty fast and my boyfriend could hardly keep up with me. Crutches can take a pretty big step! LOL!

Randy SO did not want to go to school today. I did drive him so he had about 10 extra minutes at home and he didn't have to walk to the bus stop (not far anyway, but still). He said on the way there "This is going to be the worst two weeks of my life." :( Hopefully once he got there and his friends showered him with attention he was better. All I know is he had tears in his eyes when he got out of the car. I feel like a horrible mommy but he can't miss two weeks of school! He's already missed 5 days this year. *sigh* Oh, the joys... :(

By Dawnk777 on Wednesday, September 19, 2007 - 02:20 pm:

There was no staying at home for me, either!

By Bellajoe on Wednesday, September 19, 2007 - 03:32 pm:

Aww, how was his day?

By Cat on Wednesday, September 19, 2007 - 10:38 pm:

Randy did say some kids teased him (boy, how I'd like to get my hands on them... ) but it was an okay day. The other kids did open doors for him but no one carried his books. lol His football team lost their game today--first one they've lost all season. Another mom said to tell Randy it was because he couldn't play. :) I imagine getting him off to school for the next few days is going to be hard.
