Kids and "ODD" food question

Moms View Message Board: Parenting Discussion: Archive January-June 2003: Kids and "ODD" food question
By Eve on Friday, April 4, 2003 - 11:10 am:

Do your kids eat anything that others might find odd? Or do they like something that you would never expect a child to like?

For Sydney-she likes salsa. She loves to dip. So,I buy fresh salsa and make her nachos on occasion. She's not a great eater, so I look at it as a really good way to get her to eat tomatoes. I've even been sneaking finely shredded carrots in with the cheese! Ah-hah!

She also loves hummus. Soy bean or any kind! Thankfully, that's a SUPER healthy snack with whole wheat pitas!

The reason I thought of this was, we were out to lunch this past weekend and Syd was looking at the menu and saw chips and salsa and asked for them. So, we ordered them and everyone thought it was REALLY odd that she was eating the spicy salsa. When I was around 1, I begged my mother for a spicy pepper and she thought that if she gave it to me, I would never ask again. I still LOVE hot peppers! I can actually eat sliced jalapenos right out of the jar. I can't get enough! So, it's only natural to me that Syd would like that flavor too.

So, what "odd" things are your kids eating?

My dd LOVES hummus as well. She and Dh make their own and it's a little father/daughter thing.

My kids also love bruschetta w/fresh tomato salsa.

Good question, Eve! Off the top of my head I really can't think of anything that would be considered odd that my kids like. Although my mom still laughs over the fact that my kids always chose to have their birthday dinner at a chinese restaurant that is definitely not geared to kids. (No kids menu, no milk, no high chairs). Of course, last year I took them to lunch at Denny's and now I think they will be choosing that as their birthday dinner destination! LOL. Oh well, I enjoyed while I could! :) They like calamari and they love when we have fondue night at the house, but really their tastes are pretty standard I think.

I do, however, have a child who does not like chocolate! I still can't understand how any child of mine does not like that! LOL. And other parents have been shocked at birthday parties when they are pouring soda and kool-aid and my kids ask for milk or water. Like the restaurant thing, I will enjoy that for as long as I can! :)

My ds (age 3 next Monday) loves salsa and will eat jalapenos as well. He loves spicy foods. He also loves broccoli and green onions. When I'm cutting green onions I always have to give him a couple to get him out from under my feet. He just stands there and munches them.

Both of my children love sushi and beg for it. Raw tuna is their favorite.

My dd (age 7 tomorrow) can sit down with a container of bean sprouts and eat the entire thing. She also likes collard greens.

Hmmmm, well, my ex husband and my husband are both hunters and all 3 of my boys eat all kinds of meat that I really dont care for. They eat squirrel, deer meat, elk meat, pheasant, dove....

They like chips and salsa (or ANY dip for that matter).

They also love seafood.

This isnt odd, but we cannot keep fruit in our house. I can go to the store and stock up and within 3 days ALL banana's, apples, oranges, plums, watermelon, strawberries, you name it-- it GONE! LOL Between the 5 of us we are all pretty fruity I guess you could say.

My kids always liked salads from when they were around 2 or so. In fact, Jeff wouldn't eat anything sweet when he was young. He would eat raw carrots for dessert.

I can remember Jen eating Pick-a-peppa sauce w/cream cheese when she was about 18 months old. She's always loved spicy things. Jen also used to eat whole garlic cloves. EWWWWWWWWW

I took Jules and Madison to eat Mexican food recently and we had to get a separate bowl of salsa for Madison; she loved it. She also loves hummus, which I thought was unusual for a toddler.

My 23 month old dd will eat salsa all day too!! She is not a big veggie eater so I also look at it as an easy way to get the tomatoes, onions, cilantro, etc.

My dd who is 4 will eat almost anything, including oysters, clams, crab, chinese food, asparagus.

They both love chocolate and lots of kid food too!

Oh, Karen, I knew Madison and Sydney would get along! LOL!

OK, oysters and sushi! Holy smokes! I can't even eat that! LOL! This is hysterical! It just makes you realize that if you expose kids to different food, they really will eat it! Although, what's wrong with mine? She hardly eats anything! LOL! Oh well, atleast salsa is healthy! Right Laura?LOL!

My 4 and 3 yr old DD"s love chips and salsa. My 3 yr old DD will eat about anything...spicy included! My 4 yr old loves salsa but won't go for anything else w/onions or peppers in it. My 3 yr old loves pepper on anything I will let her put it on.

My kids prefer eating at chuck-a-rama over McDonalds. Which is good because they love to build their own salads etc.

Hey Eve, I made homemade pizza today and put salsa on it, dd gobbled it up! She likes cheese too, that probably helped! My oldest dd who eats everything else does not like cheese, or salsa, or tomatoes. Basically only likes the crust part of pizza, she loved making the crust (mixing ingredients, kneading dough, rolling out with rolling pin "it's just like playdough!".

When ever we ate out with the kids we ordered them what the restruant served. Like pasta at olive garden, enchiladas at mexican food places etc. So my 9 year olds favorite food (and has been as long as I can remember) is crab legs. By time she was four she could crack into them and just have at it. My youngest guy is the salad boy, dry no dressing. He will often turn down dessert for a bowl of salad. I use to have after school snacks of cereal bars, and my kids said they would prefer if I bought a bag of salad they could eat!

My DD loves Good Seasons salad dressing - right outa the bottle. Something about the vinegar. She'll lick the dressing of the lettuce. Makes my skin crawl when she asks for some in a cup and spoons the stuff into her mouth.

By Tonya on Monday, April 7, 2003 - 09:38 am:

Timmy loves anything hot!!! Taco Bell hot sauce or real salsa. You name it he will eat it.

Jalapenos are awesome in his eyes too. I can eat some hot stuff but the stuff he and Rich eats is just unbelievable. My eyes are watering just thinking about it.

DD's favs are black or green olives. She has loved them since eating first solids. I would put them in the baby food grinder and she would gobble them up.

She loves pears.

Does not like spicy, but will eat raw onions.

Loves chinese.

Loves chips and mild salsa.

Will not eat pepper or catsup.

Loves fish but not shrimp.

Loves salad---I should say lettuce w/ dressing.

Loves asparagus, green beans, peas, squash and likes brocolli.

Her favorite dinner is either black beans and rice or zucinni (sp?) cashew quiche.

Does not like milk, will ask to go to McD's but will only eat about 2 bites of the burger...and only if there is cheese on it.

She enjoys munching on raw cucumbers, carrots and squash.

We've never tried hummus (sp?) but a friend of mine says she would probably love it due to the fact that she loves legumes.

She will not drink chocolate milk. And hate licoreish...I know that is spelled wrong, but phonetically okay :)

Oh, and loves cooked or raw spinach.
