Too much sleep for 15-month old?

Moms View Message Board: Parenting Discussion: Archive January-June 2003: Too much sleep for 15-month old?

Ok, I know this probably sounds nuts, but can kids get too much sleep? I ask because my DD goes to bed everynight at 7pm like clockwork, and wakes up between 7-9 am. At least twice a week she sleeps past 8am. And she takes two naps a day, 2-3 hrs each. She's happy and wildly energetic, always into something and running around, so I think she just needs the sleep. She's healthy in every other way, just a little lean. (She's tall and skinny.) I just wonder sometimes how other kids this age are and if this is totally normal. She's slept like this since she's been about 6 months. I'm probably pressing my luck trying for #2, I'm sure the next one will be opposite!

My kids are were like that, slept at least 12 hours a night, took 2 2 hour naps during the day. Don't comlplain! Be thankful!
So, no I don't think they can get too much sleep.

I have four kids. Two of them slept like your dd. Two of them barely slept at all! They all still have the same sleep patterns as when they were babies, minus the naps. As long as she is developing normally, eats well and doesn't seem lethargic when she is awake, I say count your blessings where you find them. :) Fighting sleep can be a huge issue between parents and child.

ENJOY IT! My first slept like that when he was little. I wish my second (DD) did!

hehe, thanks for the confirmation! I do feel very, very lucky she sleeps so well! People just act like I'm lying when I tell them how much she sleeps. hehe. Wow, that makes me happy to know she might actually keep this up for a few years.

Me too Trina. My ds slept it seemed all the time. My dd will be 14 months old and is up 2-3 times a night. I blame it on those darn teeth. She has this one eye tooth, we have been able to see the tip for 3 weeks, can't feel it, but it is not moving. Any suggestions???

Enjoy! :) My kids also sleep 12-14 hrs a night and still take a 2 hr nap in the afternoon and my oldest is 4! It is wonderful quiet time for me in the afternoon. Though, we have to break my 4 yr old of the napping habit since she will be in school next year.

Mommyathome, I noticed your DD was born in June of '98. So was mine! June 13th to be exact. Yours still naps?! Lucky you. My DD gave them up at 2.5, despite the fact I strongly encouraged them. :( Argh! DS took 2-3 hr. naps until he was almost 5. They are all so different. My DD will also be starting Kindergarten next year, half day.

Twotwentysix, how's that eye tooth coming along? They are the absolute worst, from my experience. Hope your DD is doing better, and sleeping better, too!

Both of my kids slept like this and it was wonderful!! It is possible to have 2 good sleepers, but we thought we'd really be pushing our luck for 3--LOL. Both of mine still took naps through kindergarten. In kdg. they have naptime after lunch at school and then they would take a 1-1.5/hr nap at home on the weekends. My youngest is a 6 y/o kdg and still takes a nap every day. If we have a really busy day and he can't get a nap, then he will invariably fall asleep in the car at some point during the day. He is high energy and just gets tired. They also sleep about 11 hours on school nights and 11-12 hours on weekends. You are blessed---enjoy it!!
