Anything to ease a cough for my sick girl?

Moms View Message Board: Parenting Discussion: Archive January-June 2003: Anything to ease a cough for my sick girl?
By Eve on Wednesday, March 12, 2003 - 09:48 am:

Poor Syd has been sick for going on 2 weeks now. First, fluid in her ear and we were taking Amoxicillin just to ward off an ear infection. Before that teeth! This past weekend, she had a fever and vomiting. This I think was from the visit to the Dr.'s office. Now, it's turned into a cold and cough. The poor thing!

I've given her a cough suppresant, but is there anything else I can do? She's 24 months, so I can't really make her a cup of hot tea. She wants to hang out in my bed and watch tv and drink her juice. That's what I have let her do. Is there anything else I can do to help her out? She just seems so miserable. Not to mention, now I got the darn cold! Ick!

What about a bath, vicks vapor rub and a humidifier. I always use the cool mist one when my kids have a cold. I hope she feels better soon. Sounds like a miserable two weeks!

The poor thing. If you live near a good health food store you can try elderberry syrup.

{{{Eve and Sydney}}} It really stinks when they're sick! Have you tried the Feel Better Bear lollipops with cough medicine in them? Looks like you're already covering all the bases. Hang in there and hopefully this will pass soon. I'm home with two sick kids myself. :( Wah!

Thanks for the advice. I guess I was just looking for a miracle that I know isn't out there. LOL! I guess it's just the time of year for this!

Oh, Trina, it stinks! We need some Spring soon! Atleast we could hang out in the back yard. Syd was saying "Bye bye! Coat! Boots!" I felt so bad!

Pedialyte makes freezer pops also, especially if she is becoming dehydrated at all...my mother swears by the old fashioned remedy for coughs

slowly warm 1/4 cup of white sugar on a low heat then add milk slowly while constantly stirring, making sure it doesn't burn
this makes a drink that tastes like caramel (I can't stand it), but whatever it has, it works..believe me I had plenty of it while I was growing up...if you try it let me know

Did you know that if the entire world could.would stay home for 3 weeks we could totally get rid of the cold virus....wow wouldn't that put a lot of people out of work...LOL

Triaminic has these wonderful vapor patches out on the market now. Basically it's like vicks vapor rub, confined to a patch. It's great - I use them myself, even though there for kids.

Other ideas - Welch's grape juice is a remedy to sooth the throat - it's instantaneous but temporary! Trust me, next time you find you're swallowing razor blades, try it - it's amazing.

Benlyn Cough syrup has now come out with cough syrup in a freezie - yes, a freezie and again, they're amazing for kids. They are found in the cough med section. I also use those - overdose on them actually!

My other remedy for the nasty cough is the throat spray like chloroseptic. now, obviously this is only for adults, but thought I'd mention it.

With my dd, I've tried many things, but I've also found Buckley's to be the best med for night time. And also, Robitusson works by cumulative effect - meaning take it every 4 hrs whether there's a cough or not - the pharmacist told me that one!

Good luck! Can ya tell I deal with a lot of coughs around my house!??

Forgot to mention, that the triaminic patches can be put on their throat/neck easily without them noticing - so they won't wanna take it off. Here's my secret - DD usually coughs at night - I can put it on and she won't even notice. But during the day - change to a turtlenect shirt and as you're putting it on, slip it on the neck. It's skin colour and very thin.

My doctor told me to give my 9 month olds peppermint tea, as warm as they could drink it, when they were sick recently. I was told to drink some myself, since I had a deep, non-productive cough. I put it in their sippy cups instead of juice. Apparently it's good for asthma, too. I have no clue why, but that's what I was told, HTH.

another home remedy for coughing:

2 tablespoons of butter
2 tablespoons of lemon juice
2 tablespoons honey
a bit of water

This original recipe also adds 2 tablespoons of whiskey! (for adults only of course) but we have used the recipe ommiting the alcohol and it works great to coat the throat and help the cough.

The doctor said sipping peach juice from the canned peaches helps a sore throat.
