No ketchup allowed - It's not going to be easy!

My 5 yr old son's dr. wants me to restrict high acid foods from his diet for 2 weeks. This kid loves ketchup! He puts it on practically everything he eats and will NOT eat meat without it. Help!

Sorry, I really can't think of anything to help you out. Why the restriction if I may ask?

By Truestori on Thursday, February 13, 2003 - 03:12 pm:

My kids like to dip in ranch dressing, bbq sauce, cheese spreads etc..Ketchup is a favorite around here also.

Maybe you can just explain to him it is temporary and try to figure out some meals that don't even bring up the "ketchup spark"! Goodluck

Wow...that would be complicated! Maybe try to switch him to ranch? Seems like kids just like to dip...in whatever there is available! Good luck with that. That is a tuff one.
I'm curious as well...why the need for no high acid foods? Is it something we need to watch for symptoms for etc.?

By Sunny on Thursday, February 13, 2003 - 04:45 pm:

It's not something going around, don't worry. :)
I took my son to the dr. because he has been vomiting 4-5 times a month since school started, but hasn't had any other symptoms. Sometimes coughing can cause him to vomit and sometimes while he's eating, he will have food come back up on him. The dr. wants him to take an antihistamine twice a day (he thinks he has allergies causing post-nasal drip) and cutting out certain high acid food and drinks for a couple weeks to see if it helps. The hard part is going to be limiting ketchup and other tomato-based products. If this doesn't work, it's back to the doctor. :(

DD hates catsup, so here are some ideas of the things she likes. Peanut butter, on almost anything! Even raw brocolli. She likes mayo on french fries. Melted cheese on anything. And italian dressing would end the list, but that wouldn't work for you :)

my son has dont the same kind of vomitin ... has he been tested for acid reflux disease ... he actually has a over active esophagus and if he eats to fast and to big a bites or highy acid spicey or greasy .... then it would come back up like a cow ...( sounds gross ) but he would just chew it back up and swollow it and not thing nothing about it ... see the food dont make it to his tummy before all this starts so no acid to burn his throat ... id suggest checkin on this ...

Ah, Sunny, that doesn't sound like much fun. Glad it's not a big serious problem (though I'm sure it is feeling like one now!) Hopefully cutting out the acid will help your son out.

Good Luck! You'll have to let us know if you come up with any new ideas for dipping!

Do you think that a health food store might carry a catsup substitute or aren't there low acid varieties of catsup? You may try calling the phone number on the back of your catsup bottle and asking them if they make a low acid catsup and where you can get it. Just a thought.:)
