Yeast infection help?

Moms View Message Board: Parenting Discussion: Archive January-June 2003: Yeast infection help?
By Jayne2 on Thursday, January 23, 2003 - 10:16 pm:

Syd has a yeast infection, or so the CNP says. She prescribed Nystatin (sp). I don't think it is working. Poor Syd just saying "my pee pee hurts" A friend said Balmex worked better than Nystatin for her sons yeast infection, so I put balmex on Syd today and Nystatin. I also have been letting her wear panties (we are potting training also) to help air out the area. Any suggestions? I've been using the Nystatin since Tuesday, should I give it more time?

By Mechelle on Thursday, January 23, 2003 - 10:53 pm:

I would give it until next Tuesday. It ususally takes it a full week to clear up a yeast infection.
I've used Balmex on DD when she was little she got a yeast infection ( I let her frink Pepsi at 6 months old........really smart!!)

I would as you are doing let her air out, that might help too........Is she itching? There is a creme I got the generic brand of it, it's an antil itch relief, smear that on her too, and it helps relieve the itchiness.

Baking soda bath won't cure it but it will make her feel better.

I'm surprised she hasn't felt relief. For myself and my DD, I have always had instant relief after first dosage of nystatin (thrush, my nipples, grown woman yest infection, child's vaginal infection).

Maybe yeast is only part of the problem. I would take her back to dr. We all know how painful that itch can be, and no need to make your child wait longer than needed if something else can be done.

I used a monistat/cortisone mixture, and it worked the first day. The monistat kills it, and the cortisone gets rid of the itch.
Aslo give her some acidophilus. You can get it in a powedered form, to add to food or drinks. My oldest had thrush and a runny nose, off and on for her first year. I went to a health food store, and they told me about it. I gave it to her daily, and her yeast went away completely. I noticed it working within days.

Jayne, how's it going?

Also, yeast thrives on sugars, so you may want to make some diet changes.

DD (11) just went through this after having her appendix out in December. She suffered for over a month. They gave her Nystatin and it DID NOT WORK. Then they said it might be bacterial and put her on a horrible antibiotic (lots of side effects - Clindamycin) for two courses...FINALLY, Monday, I took her to the gynecologist (she's only 11, but we were getting desperate) We found out it was yeast all along, and that the antibiotics she took after her surgery started it, and then the other antibiotics probably made it worse. She said that Nystatin isn't really effective on ALL kinds of yeast, and prescribed something called Terazole. She was better in two days, after suffering for a month! She couldn't do gymnastics or anything because her private area burned so much - she couldn't pee without pain, and even water from the shower made it sting and burn. Sure wish we had gone to the GYN sooner! Good luck with Sydney....I hope she feels better soon :)

OOOOhhhh Wendy, how awful! Poor thing! I belong to a board that deals with health, and yeast is apparently a huge problem for very many people, many of them aren't even aware. Antibiotics, sugars/carbs, other things can cause yeast infections. Antibiotics destroy good things in your system and you need to replace those. Jen eats yogurt with live cultures when she has a yeast infection, although the sugar in the yogurt probably defeats the purpose a little.
Another thing that's becoming more common and many doctors either aren't knowledgeable about or just don't believe to be true, is systemic yeast. My sister experienced this. She felt sick for years, and kept getting yeast infections and *thought* she was getting continuous bladder infections, and the problem was actually yeast.
She went through 2 months of oral diflucan and an extremely strict diet to rid her body of the yeast. Apparently she is very susceptible to yeast, because she really has to keep to a certain type of diet or she will flare with yeast again.
I know I'm getting WAY off topic here, but I'm just learning how big a problem yeast actually is, and there are things you CAN do to keep healthy and many times, prevent the yeast overgrowth.
Wendy, I'm glad to hear your DD's problem is being take care of with the meds.
Jayne, I hope your DD is much better soon!

There's a great book called The Yeast Connection. It's amazing what symptoms it causes.
