Bad Diaper Rash HELP!

Moms View Message Board: Parenting Discussion: Archive January-June 2003: Bad Diaper Rash HELP!
By Jenn on Thursday, January 16, 2003 - 09:21 am:

Chad has this diaper rash that is super bad. I went to the local pharmacy last night because he was in so much pain. I talked to the pharmasist and I was explaning to her how it has the red bumps and it looks like blistards closer to his rump. She is good frineds with my doctor and called him up and was telling him about Chad. He wrote a prescription out over the phone for him, but the cream is used for burn victums. She told me that this will help for infections and help treat the rash. My question for you is what else can I do to help sooth him. I have been using water and my fingers to wash him so that nothing irritates him. He doesn't want to run free because I am guessing that the air burns him. I tried underwear and he doesn't want that on him either. He is 2 and has started to potty train a little, but not 100%. I have been keeping a diaper on him because that is the only thing that doesn't seem to irritate him. The pharmisist and I both think that maybe he is getting his eye teeth or his 2 year molars because he has had soft BM's and he is not eating like he usually does. If you have any advice or suggests, please help me. I really thank you for helping him and me.

The only thing I would do is to bath him everyday.

Sounds like you are doing everything.

By Jenn on Thursday, January 16, 2003 - 09:44 am:

Do you think the oatmeal bath would help? I have some of the oil also. I was even thinking about putting him in the sitz bath, but I haven't.

By Karen55 on Thursday, January 16, 2003 - 10:07 am:

Poor baby! I was going to suggest trying the Aveeno bath. It may help his poor little bottom feel better. Good luck.

By Trina on Thursday, January 16, 2003 - 10:39 am:

Poor kiddo! I hope the cream kicks in soon and he's feeling better.

By Palmbchprincess on Thursday, January 16, 2003 - 11:01 am:

Awww... Poor thing!!!! My DD has her first bad rash right now.... it makes you want to cry! I'm just using A&D lotion. Good luck!

By Kernkate on Thursday, January 16, 2003 - 11:22 am:

The oatmeal baths should help relieve the itching or pain and my PED recommends to mix balmex and vaseline and apply it every diaper change..Worked for DD. Best of luck..Poor little guy:(

By Mechelle on Thursday, January 16, 2003 - 11:57 am:

Poor baby!!
I always use air ( won't help with him though, burns) and I use vaseline, and Balmex.. I've seen the worst diaper rashes, and it has always healed it. I swear by air, Balmex, and Vaseline.
I sure hope he gets to feeling better. (((((huggers to him)))))))

By Missymelissy on Thursday, January 16, 2003 - 12:05 pm:

Penatin cream

I gope he's better soon, poor little guy.

I am getting ready to stick him in the bath tub. Hopefully after he takes his bath, he will take a nap. He was up most of the night. I will post an update on him later. Thank you for all the suggestions. :)

By Tunnia on Thursday, January 16, 2003 - 02:02 pm:

All I can suggest is keep the area as clean and dry as possible. It's too bad that running naked isn't an option. Fresh air and nothing on the area is the absolute best thing to treat diaper rash in my experience. Good luck and I hope your little guys is doing 100% better soon.

By Melissa on Thursday, January 16, 2003 - 02:08 pm:

Baking soda bath will help tons it is very soothing.

By Jenn on Thursday, January 16, 2003 - 02:20 pm:

He took his bath and it is a little better, but nothing for me to get excited about yet. He seems to be in a better mood also. He wanted to sit in the tub for 45 minutes, so I guess the water felt good to him. Thank you all for everything. We are suppose to be taking him to the doctor in the morning.

I've used something called Ihle's Paste (recommended by a mommy & Doctor friend of mine), especially for overnight. You should be able to get it at most drugstores (well, in Canada, at least). It's very thick and seems to stay on the rash and protect it better than diaper cream because it doesn't rub off as easily. I think it's a topical anesthetic as well. Anyway, worked for us when we had those really bad rashes. Also, my ds had a few yeast infections that sound a little like what you describe. I'd check with your Dr. but you can get an over the counter cream or lotion called Nilstat that works well if that's the case.

Even if it burns, air it out as much as possible. I would read to my children, sing to them, play with them while they aired out. Anything to keep their mind off it. Use a small fan to increase the drying process. My best suggestion for diaper rash, if the usual remedies don't work? Sounds crazy, but use Bag Balm. It works miracles.

They are right - air as much as possible. Wash with really mild soap and rinse, rinse, rinse, and pat dry.

I still have a photo of my middle son, bare butt in the playpen with his "cheeks" bright red from a diaper rash. That boy could run up a rash like anything and it was a real problem to keep his skin clear. Even now he rashes up at the darndest things, including bandaid adhesive and wooly caterpillars.

I hope your son is doing better. It seems everyone has already made great suggestions. My only addition would be to relay what my ped recently told me to do to treat my ds's rash. Mix equal parts of Balmex and A&D Ointment and a little bit of cornstarch to thicken the paste. After a couple days of this concoction, my son's rash was healed. The best of luck!!

I always used some called "corona", it is found at petsmart, it is a lanolin based aneseptic. My doctor suggested this. My daughter had very sensitive skin and always had a bit of a rash. We used this one time she was bleeding so bad, we had tried many things including some 50 dollar specially blended cream from the pharmacist. We finally used this stuff and she was better over night. After that we never had a diaper rash that lasted long. When she got a rash in the evening we would coat this on there and by morning she was all better.

We have had good luck with Desitin powder. Not regular baby powder, but Desitin brand, it has a different active ingredient. Dry their bottom really well (we even use a blow dryer on lightest setting) then sprinkle on and rub in gently with a tissue. Then dust lightly again. Good Luck :)

By Marcia on Saturday, April 5, 2003 - 11:29 am:

I used a monistat and cortisone mixture, and it would clear up a bad rash over night.
Hope he's feeling better today!

By Angellew on Monday, April 7, 2003 - 01:55 pm:

I LOVE the Balmex and Desitin creams! They have cleared up everything when my DD has gotten diaper rash. But, you REALLY have to layer it on. It's like white-out!!! Paint it all over. I think it has a cooling effect as well!

Good luck and I hope the little one feels better.

I remember when my boys were young, they had an awful rash. The peds told me to get Betadine (sp) and wet a cotton ball and spray the Betadine on the wet cotton ball, then squeeze that on the diaper rash. In a sense making a Betadine wash. This stuff, as you probably already know stains everything, so you need to put on a diaper loosely. It took the rash right away. It was great!
