Bed safety rails

Moms View Message Board: Parenting Discussion: Archive January-June 2003: Bed safety rails
By Melanie on Wednesday, January 15, 2003 - 10:09 am:

A couple of weeks ago we moved our 22 month old to a "big girl bed". I put on a Safety First bed rail. Last night she somehow managed to kick the safety rail out of position and fell out of bed, with half the rail landing on top of her. Now she has a black eye!!! Do they make rails that attach more securely? Thank you for any suggestions you can offer!!

Melanie,

Poor little thing! Ouch....

Is this the rail that goes under the mattress? That is the one I have always used and it has worked great. Safety First would be gald to hear you story I'm sure. I called Graco on a stroller that I had that collapsed and they sent a brand new one of my choice. Just a thought. I hope she gets better soon!

Poor kiddo! Ouch! Must have scared her, I'm sure.

Melanie, which Safety First one do you have? I did a search and they have mesh ones and plastic ones. I had the plastic one when Ty was little and it didn't stop him from falling out of bed! I bought the mesh one for B and had no problems. It was more secure than the plastic one. In fact Eve has it now. LOL!

Another option would be to put the mattress on the floor until she's older.

Sorry, I can't help, we didn't use a bed rail for our son. Wish I had some advice.

By Melanie on Wednesday, January 15, 2003 - 10:53 am:

Yes, Stori, the rails go under the mattress. Yes, I think I may just send Safety First our story. If it helps them design a safer rail it's worth my time!

Trina, it's the mesh one. I used it for Alec (Griff was in a toddler bed and didn't need it) and never had a problem.

Dh looked at it this morning and he is going to tie the rails to the opposite side of the bed so they can't slide out. Putting the mattress on the floor, however, is a very good idea. That would certainly solve this problem.

Thanks for the thoughts and words of sympathy. I took a pic of her this morning. When I have time later I will post it.

Poor kiddo! I hope her eye is not too sore. Ouch! Daddy and Mommy are Syd's bed rails. LOL! Syd has a double bed on the floor just on the box spring. So, I have a little room to stick a body pillow between her and the rail. (Then, the bed is up against the wall on the other side) Although, she doesn't sleep there, but maybe twice a week. I hope the new method of tying the rail will help!

Here she is:

I have to say, people can be so nice. I went to jazzercise this morning and, of course, everyone wanted to know what happened. Then they all told me their own stories of how their little ones got bruised in similar ways. BTDT stories can be so comforting! :)

Oh man!!!
Poor baby!!
I would definaltey be writing a letter to the company and telling them, and send a pic of what happened with thier safety rails.
The ones that I have on my toddler beds, are screwed into the sides of the beds. They have the mesh on them too. Never had a problem with my 2 dks or any of my day care getting hurt, or falling out of them.
The beds I have are made my Graco.

I think my side rails are made by Graco. I know i have tried to even lay to push on mine and they do not move. Poor little girl(((HUGS))) Did you try and put vaseline on her eye? I know when my kids get hurt, I put vaseline on them because it takes the swelling and makes the bruising very min. I hope that she sleeps better tonight. :)

By Melanie on Wednesday, January 15, 2003 - 02:48 pm:

Jenn, I wish I had you here at 2:00 this morning! I never knew that about vaseline! It's probably too late now, but I can try it and see if it helps. Thanks for the tip!

Mechelle, she is in a twin bed, not a toddler bed. I certainly don't blame Safety First-she is just more wiggley than the average sleeper! But I will be writing to them and sending a pic in hopes they can make a rail for kids who are little wiggle worms. I am sure we will be able to secure this one ourselves, but it sure would be nice if they already made one that wouldn't budge!

Melanie,
I hope she is feeling better today! :)

Hey Jenn,

great tip! Should have dawned on me since I watch boxing...LOL :)

Thanks, Stori! Her eye, of course, looks worse today. The purple now goes up onto her eyelid. But it doesn't seem to bother her at all. It just looks awful!!
