Charter schools for LD kids?

Moms View Message Board: Parenting Children with Special Needs: Charter schools for LD kids?
By Lilianasmama on Tuesday, March 3, 2009 - 06:21 pm:

I just have a question....

Has anybody ever considered a charter school for their LD child?

I discovered one that gives weekly tests in order to see if the child has mastered the lessons for the week. They also have online virtual classrooms, access to teachers anytime via email or cell phone. I already have tutors for her that could help teach the subjects she is having difficulty in. They also have field trips, keep records, and monitor the child with tests and conferences...

I have heard it is an up and coming new option that could work out well for the LD child, or the gifted child. Part of the benefit is learning at your own pace, and not moving on to the next lesson until you have mastered the lessons for the week. (You would need to re take the test until you pass.)

I am wondering if any of you are already doing this. How is it working for you? Do you know of anybody who is doing a similar type of schooling for there child? I am watching my child struggle and considering this as an option...any opinions would be appreciated!

Thank you!

Hi Lilianasmama,

Just love the way you are always looking for a new way to support your children. You're a great mom!!!!

Yes, we have explored charter schools and have actually had 2 of our children in schools that were private startups intended for LD children - one actually took primarily gifted children with severe LD and some ED issues (usually by junior high you've developed ED issues simply because of the system). Amazing place - used unique materials - every class had a teacher and a para beside any mandated staff for special needs.

Some of my friends with LD children have found charters great - others have found that the standards can be very high and there was an intrinsic pressure on the kids. Depends on the staff and their training and experience, strategy, values, curriculum of the school and their flexiblity. We liked some of the Montesorri schools - there again see previous sentence. Marie Montesorri actually started her system to help children who were institutionalized and everyone claimed were uneducable. When she succeeded her system was co-opted by people of means but you could definitely develop a coop or charter school using her system that would be quite successful with LD children. Never overlook the possibility of homeschooling - there are wonderful groups and curriculums to help.

Lilianasmama,
Did you see the new education secretary supporting good charter schools. I saw him on Charlie Rose. He was motivated and intelligent and most significantly informed on education issues.

If you want anything special for LD kids in your local community this is a good time to put it on the desk of your local congress person. There will be money soon for this kind of thing.
