School Frustration

Moms View Message Board: Parenting Children with Special Needs: School Frustration
By Angellew on Monday, September 22, 2008 - 04:44 pm:

I'm soooo frustrated! My DD started out in regular kindergarten (school 1). Then, we finally got an official word on the PDD-NOS, and they accepted her into a transitional kindergarten (school 2). At the end of last school year, they decided, in cooperation with our neuro-psychs' eval, to put her in an ABA-based class, which she stared in the summer (school 3)! Now... after eight weeks in summer school and three weeks of regular school, they called me in today! This is not the place for her!!! Grrrr...

She's the only kid in her class who can speak! So, she goes to speech, does great, goes back to class and tries to talk to the other children, and doesn't understand why they won't talk back. She doesn't get that they are non-verbal! I was told today the main reason the school suggested this ABA class was because of "behavioral issues" with DD! I was astounded! DD has NEVER had a behavioral issue! and the teachers on her team now know his and can't understand where the recommendation came from!?! So, now we are going for a language-based class in yet another school!!!

I'm so frustrated! But... the good news is she's making great strides! They gave her a battery of tests (ABBLs, I think) and she is off the charts! She has the same OT at this school as in school #1... and she can't believe the progress she's making. So, there is good news!

I'm going to look at the class next week!

Wow, that IS frustrating! I guess you have to look at the best placement being more important than consistency for her right now. And actually, the fact that all this is happening now instead of when she's older really is a good thing. It'd be much worse for them to move her around this much if she were in middle school or high school even.

Good luck next week. Let us know what you think of the new class! :)
