School Update

Moms View Message Board: Parenting Children with Special Needs: School Update
By Cat on Saturday, August 9, 2008 - 06:38 pm:

There was an open house at Robin's new school today and I got to meet all of his teachers (4 of them). I have to say I'm very impressed. They all have a genuine passion for these kids. Two of them have coffee pots in their rooms and they let the kids have it if they want (most of the kids are ADHD and the caffeine helps them). The ratio is 15:1 and at least 2 of the 4 teachers said the kids are never in their seats--they have them either on the floor or up and moving around while learning. Robin's favorite teacher (so far) is also my favorite. :) She's pretty hyper herself. All four have special ed degrees. So far Robin has said only good things about the school. Well, except that the lunch room wasn't ready yet so they've had take out pizza for lunch every day and he's bored with pizza! lol

After these first few days and going to this open house, I really think this is the perfect fit for Robin. :)

BTW, we're donating our pool table to the school. Since we're finishing the basement we really don't have anywhere to put it and the school has a couple extra classrooms. I talked to the math teacher and the vice principle about it and they said it'd be great for incentives and for the kids that can't leave early on Fridays (they get out 50 minutes early on Fridays if they've done all that was expected of them during the week, but the buses run at regular times so some kids have 50 minutes to kill at school). The math teacher and vp were thrilled with our offer and we'll be thrilled to get that thing out of the basement! lol

I think that sounds great! I do think the caffeine helps adhd kids what a great idea that the school would do that! I think the pool table is a great incentive it just sounds awesome and I'm glad it is a good fit for you.
