New school, and new 504

Moms View Message Board: Parenting Children with Special Needs: New school, and new 504
By Tarable on Monday, July 21, 2008 - 11:45 am:

Okay Jordan finally got some help 2 weeks before school was out last year, and of course she is going to a new school this year since she is in 6th grade she moved up to middle school. I have no clue how all this works but I do know that they said they would send the 504 to the new school. How do I know they got it and/or do I try to contact the school before school starts to make sure that they know what is going on?

I am totally lost with all this and don't really know what to do. I don't want school to get started and things get out of hand before I even talk to anyone. I know she has had all summer to improve but it looks like from all the signs I have gotten this summer that there will be issues this school year too.

Help from all you BTDT moms!

The new school will get her 504, but it may be a good idea to let her teachers know she has one in case it gets lost in the paperwork shuffle or they don't see it right away. If you want you can call a meeting shortly after school starts. I usually just talked to my kids teacher at back to school night or something. Just to give them a heads up of what to expect. Anything more in depth really requires a meeting. I'm sure I'll be having one shortly after Robin's school starts! lol Good luck. Don't stress too much about it right now. There'll be lots of time for that.

Thanks. There really isn't a back to school night here. My older dd is in the same school and about 3 weeks into school there is a "meet the teacher" night but you get to see the teachers for all of 15 min per class and I mean that is 15 min for all 20-30 kids in the class's parents to see them.

I guess when I find out who her teachers are I will email at the important ones (the classes she has to think about.. not p.e.) and let them know but not until the first couple of days of school.

Thanks.. I am stressing about it.. and I need to quit.

I was so stressed out a while ago about how Jordan was going to handle being in middle school and how well the school was going to be with her. Well turns out that she is thriving.. The elementary school didn't send her 504 to the new school but I got it to them and things are going wonderfully.. Granted it is only the first week but the changes are like day and night.. She is bringing me home things to sign and look at and talking to me about school. It is wonderful. And the counselor when I emailed her and a few teachers about the 504 (it has minimal accomedations right now) and needing to know if she started with the no homework thing like in the past. They all said that it is their policy to make the child call a parent when this happens during class time. I guess they don't have that problem much...

Jordan is even getting up and dressed on her own which has never happened in her life!!!! I am so excited.. now if i could just get her to eat and not lose any weight! Another story for another time!
