Mascara is a cosmetic used to thicken and define eyelashes. Mascara was first commercially marketed in Europe by Eugene Rimmel in the 1830's. Legend has it that T. L. Williams, the founder of Maybelline cosmetics popularized the product in the U.S. in the early 1900's. Up until the 1960's when the applicator wand was introduced, mascara was available as a cake and was applied with a brush or small comb. Cake mascara is still available from certain manufacturers. There are innumerable types of mascara products: clear, primer, non-clumping, colors, waterproof, smudge proof, lengthening, vitamin conditioner, curling, glitter and so on. Mascaras may contain all natural ingredients or organic and inorganic ingredients. Since mascara is applied near the eye, it is important to purchase new product regularly (follow the manufacturers instructions), never share mascara and do not allow the tube or wand to become contaminated.
