DYMO History

In 1958, DYMO was founded in California as DYMO Industries, where it introduced the first personal label maker, the embosser, and quickly revolutionized the way business and individuals organized and identified their offices and surroundings.

DYMO embossers quickly became synonymous with labeling and identification, and DYMO began to build a highly successful business producing and distributing embossers for home, office and commercial applications. Over the next ten years, DYMO expanded its business into Europe, and in the late 1960's, established its European headquarters in Sint Niklaas, Belgium.

In 1978, DYMO Industries was acquired by Esselte Office Products, one of the largest worldwide office supplies manufacturers. Under the Esselte umbrella, DYMO was able to expand its distribution throughout the office products segment.

In 1990, DYMO expanded its product line to include electronic labelmakers. These new battery-powered labelmakers, with built-in keyboards, LCD screens, numerous formatting functions and high quality printing quickly grew into DYMO's biggest business segment and DYMO continued to grow rapidly through the 1990s.

In 1998, Esselte Office products acquired CoStar Corporation, a USA firm based in Connecticut that had pioneered the market for small, dedicated label printers that connected to PC and Macintosh computers. CoStar's tiny LabelWriter® printers enable users to print one at a time labels directly from their desktop computers, eliminating the hassle of printing labels with standard office printers. The LabelWriter printers handle a wide variety of labels for envelopes, packages, file folders, disks, CDs and other media, name badges and many more applications including Internet postage. The printers include easy-to-use software and work seamlessly with popular programs such as Microsoft Word, Outlook and the Palm Desktop. The addition of the LabelWriter line meant that DYMO offered the most complete line of labeling and identification products on the market. By 2000, CoStar LabelWriter printers had been transitioned to DYMO LabelWriter printers.

The organizational structure of DYMO was also changed in 2000. CoStar's CEO became the President of DYMO. The CoStar team in Connecticut took over responsibility for the sales and marketing of all of the DYMO product lines sold in North America, along with product development for LabelWriter printers and their supplies. In Europe, DYMO management was centralized in Sint Niklaas, Belgium, where the organization handles sales and marketing for Europe, product development for embossing and electronic labelmakers, and the development and manufacturing of all embossing and electronic tapes.

In 2005 DYMO was acquired by Newell Rubbermaid and is now part of the Sanford Brands Business Unit.

Today, DYMO offers a complete range of labeling products - from simple embossers to PC connected label printers and every manual, hand-held and portable in between. DYMO labelmakers are widely used in the home, office and in many industrial and vertical applications such as bar coding, wire and cable marking, color matching, medical instrumentation and security.
