Interesting news story

Moms View Message Board: General Discussion: Archive February 2007: Interesting news story
By Cocoabutter on Friday, February 2, 2007 - 09:36 pm:

I can see that the Wireless Internet thread is dead- no one is interested cuz it's so old. :)

But I do think that this is an important news story that will make some aware who aren't already about the dangers of having an unprotected wireless network. It is a very in depth look at wireless internet security. All one has to do is drive around town to find hundreds of open networks.

At the request of the US Department of Justice, [internet security analyst Matt] Carpenter and Paul Melson, an information security engineer, helped 24 Hour News 8 to educate WiFi users on how easily hackers can commandeer open WiFi systems."

A computer security guru based in Washington, DC, Carpenter told 24 Hour News 8 organized crime reaps billions of dollars each year operating in a global cyber world.

"The underground has a different idea of currency," he said. "Credit card numbers are being used as currency."

Hackers cash in on stolen social security, bank account and credit card numbers, with sources varying from compromised corporate databases to data cherry-picked one victim at a time, one home computer at a time.
