What was your worst/best gift this year?

Moms View Message Board: General Discussion: Archive January 2007: What was your worst/best gift this year?
By Reds9298 on Wednesday, December 27, 2006 - 10:04 pm:

I really just thought about the worst first, since I got one, but thought we should add the best, too!

What were your worst and best Christmas gifts this year?

My worst: A cotton nightgown, that 4 of me would fit in, with a woman on the front drinking coffee and eating a cookie with this phrase: "Hold me, hug me, squeeze me...pretend that I'm a remote control!" All I can say is YIKES. (From MIL of course.)

My best: A large gift cert for TJMaxx. I'm going shopping tomorrow and I can't wait!

Your turn.

By Bellajoe on Wednesday, December 27, 2006 - 10:18 pm:

Best Gift would have to be a iPod, but that was sort of for dh and I
I also got a gardening wagon thing that you can store your gardening stuff in, you can use it as a seat, and it has a removable tray. I thought it was a great gift for me!

Worst gift: a wooden paper towel holder with a ugly gray ceramic cat on it. Neither dh or I like cats at all, and this was an UGLY cat!
MIL got it for "the family" and we can't figure out why! LOL
I'm so glad she wasn't here to see our faces when we opened it.
LOL!

By Annie2 on Wednesday, December 27, 2006 - 10:21 pm:

Well, I asked my dh to buy me a pair of jeans from this boutique jean store in our town. All of my jeans are too baggy on me.
He did....but paid twice as much as I would have spent on a pair of jeans. I was thinking up to about $100. He spent $172. on a pair!!! They didn't fit me. The bad news is there is a store credit only policy on returns. Now I am obligated to find a pair from this store.
I went today and did exchange them for a cute pair but I need to have them hemmed so I won't be able to wear them in the next week or so.
Why would someone buy something from a store, with that pricetage, with a store credit only?...UUGHHHH!

Dh also bought me some lingerie; which was on my list. Instead of going to Victoria's Secret or a store in the mall, he bought me something from a local store; again I think it will be a no return or store credit type of thing. I tried on the bra and it does not fit and the color is a bright green. I look like Tinkerbell! LOL I'm going to try to return it tomorrow; at least for an exchange.

He did buy me a nice Fossil watch which I wouldn't buy for myself but actually love the style. :)

By Heaventree on Wednesday, December 27, 2006 - 10:31 pm:

I knew it was your MIL as soon as I read the description. LOL She must really love you Deanna!

My best gift was a running shirt with thumb hooks! We didn't really get a lot of presents so I don't have a worst gift.

I read a story recently in a magazine where a group of women get together every year and they all bring their worst gifts and have a "Worst Gift" exchange. Mostly for laughs, I'd love to do that with a bunch of girl friends.

By Pamt on Wednesday, December 27, 2006 - 10:35 pm:

No worst gift. My best gift was a hot little brown lace and silk dress with lingerie straps with a hot night out with DH and a prearranged babysitter attached. :) Only problem is that we are having to postpone the date because the dress didn't fit. It was too tight only in the bust, but enough that I could zip it up until the zipper reached my boobage. I told you that my girls were growing out of control!!

By Heaventree on Wednesday, December 27, 2006 - 10:44 pm:

OMG, Pam you just reminded me, can I change my BEST gift? Is it too late? You all know what I got. LOL!

By Kaye on Wednesday, December 27, 2006 - 10:46 pm:

Best gift, a purse from my DH, he actually went and bought it on his own time and had it wrapped!

Worst gift, not really one here, but I do have several things to return. We got several duplicate items (like I got two toaster ovens). So the worst gift is that I have to go to of all places WALMART for returns!

By Pamt on Wednesday, December 27, 2006 - 10:46 pm:

LOL Heaventree!! I think your best gift somehow ended up with me. You regifter you! :)

By Cocoabutter on Wednesday, December 27, 2006 - 10:52 pm:

If I had to choose, I would say that my worst gift was a toaster from ds. He doesn't like the toaster oven we have, so I have to wonder if he picked out this regular toaster so that he would have something he could use himself?

My BEST gift was a NEW STOVE!!!

By Yjja123 on Wednesday, December 27, 2006 - 11:07 pm:

My best gift is a kiln.
My worse gift was a computer. Well, kinda :) I am happy to have a new computer BUT... the only reason I got it is because mine crashed while we were on vacation.
I really did not get any bad gifts this year. My SIL did not give us anything, so no story there.
Oh wait---she did give the kids things. My son received a very nice Nascar gift basket. No complaints there. My daughter, on the other hand, received ridiculous gifts. She is 12. She received craft kits for preschoolers and a preschool flash card set. Nice huh? So typical SIL. We no longer give her the time of day. She pulls this crap and we simply donate the stuff.
The kids think *know* she is insane :)

By Mrsheidi on Wednesday, December 27, 2006 - 11:33 pm:

Heaven and Pam, you guys are cracking me up! And, Deanna, I thought "MIL" too! LOL

Worst gift- A remote meat thermometer sensor (from my FIL and his wife). I do normally like gadgets, but USEFUL gadgets! The meat is done when the microwave goes off!! LOL :)
I also received some Christmas nicknacks from my nutty aunt. I don't like things that just sit there and look like they came from the dollar store. I'd rather save a dollar each day for 3 months and buy something that is classic. But, she bought Connor an Elmo TMX that cracks both of us up...so, all is well of course.

Best gift- My husband knew I had been eyeing a diamond and pearl pendant so he asked my brother to make me one just like it!! It's GORGEOUS!!! I was even able to be on the phone with him when I opened it! I bawled my eyes out! :)

By Bobbie~moderatr on Thursday, December 28, 2006 - 12:32 am:

I too got a new computer for Christmas and also not by choice. My old one died two days before Christmas and we went out and bought the new one tonight. So four days with out a computer. My oldest DD was going through withdraws so bad I had to take her to the library yesterday so she could log on for a few minutes. LOL Poor baby. :(

I didn't get a bad gift, simply because I didn't get many gifts... Most were from my kids and my sister did up a family fun night basket.

No complaints here..

By Crystal915 on Thursday, December 28, 2006 - 12:57 am:

Best: A GORGEOUS pair of pearl and silver earrings to match the necklace I got for my birthday. Not really a Christmas gift, but a weekend in LA in January is not such a bad deal either.
I didn't get any really bad gifts either, one strange pendant from my eccentric grandmom, but I didn't get many gifts this year.

By Jjandmom on Thursday, December 28, 2006 - 04:48 am:

Best Gifts - Hubby got me a nice picture frame from Murphy Jewelers for baby that is due in Jan ( his 1st ) and MIL & FIL gave us a large check to go spend on what we want and also a 11 Cup Food Processor. So now I have to decide what I really want to buy cause I have everything that I really need.

By Dawnk777 on Thursday, December 28, 2006 - 07:46 am:

DH and I decided not to do gifts with each other, so that we could get a new TV. We got a 26" LG LCD flat screen TV. It's all high-def ready. It was cool watching a DVD last night, and watching the high-def version of one of the public TV channels.

My worst gift wasn't that bad, though. It was a pumpkin-spiced candle, in a jar. I already have one, though and I don't burn my candles enough to use it up! LOL!

By Kateg on Thursday, December 28, 2006 - 07:57 am:

Best Gift : An Ipod Nano from DH. I love it. I also got a Grinch village that I loved from my kids. So, I have two favorites this year. I got a lot of other great gifts but those two are the favs.
I didn't really get a worst gift everyone did a great job on gifting this year.

By Kateg on Thursday, December 28, 2006 - 09:10 am:

My sweetest gift - was a beautiful cat we've named Fat Louie. My DH knew I've been wanting one and he surprised us with one. Louie is part of the family already.

By Imamommyx4 on Thursday, December 28, 2006 - 12:36 pm:

Best, best gift--dh and 5 yo dd went and had pics of the two them done. Dh had on a pink shirt to match dd. Then dh had a bunch of them framed in a composite frame and gave me the rest. They are soooooooo beautiful. And it was one of those precious, priceless things that dh did without being told or asked or hinted about. And something that I love.

Last year youngest son, who was 20 at the time, gave dh a Chic-fil-a cow calendar and me a $3 keychain flashlight. This year he gave dh a jewelry store watch and me a butterfly necklace from same jewelry store. Dh and I were both in shock. He said that is why he hadn't saved much the past couple of months. I really don't want my kids spending that kind of money on me, but it was such a sweet gift b/c he said he just wanted to get us something nice and had fun picking them out.

By Tonya on Thursday, December 28, 2006 - 12:38 pm:

Best gift would be Rich getting my engagement ring resized so I could wear it and asking me to marry him again.

No worst gift because we only bought a few for each other due to the cruise in February.

By Mommyof5 on Thursday, December 28, 2006 - 02:08 pm:

This has to be the best gift ever. My grandfather died in July of this year and I miss him terribly. My dh went to my parents house and helped them find all the old 8mm tapes from when I was a kid and wrapped them up along with a gift certifate to a video store that will put them on dvd. We are getting together with my family on Saturday and my dad is brining the projector and screen so that we can all watch the movies. I WILL get to "see" my grandpa again this Christmas.

By Breann on Thursday, December 28, 2006 - 04:19 pm:

Best Gift: DH bought me some very nice perfume. I've never really used expensive perfume before. Not sure where to wear it...seems funny to put it on before heading to walmart :)

Worst Gift: Probably the gifts that DH helped my kids pick out. They each got me one of those cheap bath sets (lotion/bodywash/scrubber thing) from walmart. Of course the kids and DH think that I really love them ;) From walmart, a pair of pj's or a warm up suit or something would have better suited my taste. Oh well, the kids were excited to give me the gifts.

By Andi on Thursday, December 28, 2006 - 04:29 pm:

Worst gift would have to be a basket of cheese and crackers that won't ever go bad. LOL:)

Best would have to the 2 Coach purses my DH got me and one of them had 14 Personal training sessions in it. Some would get upset about a gift like that from their hubby but I loved it! He knows how much I like to work out with my trainer and I haven't been able to for a few months now.

By Mrsheidi on Thursday, December 28, 2006 - 05:52 pm:

Mommyof5, that is SO sweet! I'm tearing up just thinking about that!!

OHMYGOSH Andi! That is a great gift! I'm the same way. hhhhmmmm...ideas for next Christmas...
Scott bought me an elliptical machine one year and I loved it.
Let me know how the training sessions go! I would love those. I'm trying to lose 10 lbs by the time Scott returns in April. I have to read my "Fit for Life" book again.

By Bobbie~moderatr on Thursday, December 28, 2006 - 09:59 pm:

Oh Mommyof5.. That is so very sweet.. Enjoy.

By Ginny~moderator on Monday, January 1, 2007 - 09:24 am:

Best gift - a DVD player from one of my bosses. Worst gift - two photo albums from my co-grandmother, who doesn't know that I already have a box full of photo albums that my mother brought with her in 1992 and never used.

A really nice thing - my dear dil is sometimes a pitb when trying to get ideas of what to give her - this year her husband, my son, didn't have a clue either. She had a list but it was all stuff I would have had to order on line at least two weeks before I got the list. Finally, I just got her several different sizes of vanilla candles from Yankee Candle, because she loves vanilla fragrance. When she started unpacking the gift bag, she said "great, I am all out of vanilla candles and would have had to buy some next week" - so it worked out nicely.

By Karen~admin on Monday, January 1, 2007 - 11:07 am:

We didn't do gifts this year either. But when we were on vacation, DH bought me an antique looking blue diamond ring, and I love it!!! I've been wanting a blue diamond for years. I'll have to post a pic of it.

We also bought some artwork in Ft. Lauderdale signed by the musical artists. Most people aren't into that stuff, but we are, so we opened it on Christmas day.
