Antibiotics & Yeast Infections?

Moms View Message Board: General Discussion: Archive December 2006: Antibiotics & Yeast Infections?

I'm going Anon on this one, but I'm sure many of you will know who this is. I have been on antibiotics for a week as a preventative measure against infection and well um I've got the itchies. KWIM?

Of course it's the holidays and there's no hope of getting in to see anyone, should I just go and buy some monostat? Talk to the pharmacist tommorrow? Any suggestions?

I would try something over-the-counter. Can't you call your doctor, in the morning? Is there a walk-in clinic you could go to? I know I have to work tomorrow!

I have found the 3 day OTC stuff to work better than the 1 day. The best thing is an Rx dose of Diflucan, if you can get that from your doc or a walk-in clinic, it'll knock it right out. You're not alone, antibiotics tend to do that to me too.

I agree with Karen. I like the 3 day Gyne-Lotrimin cream. I have even bought the CVS version of it, and it works very well. You can use the cream on the outside as well as the inside. It is over the counter and is about $11-12.00. The "itchies" is VERY common on antibiotic therapy. I had to take a long bout of it this past Fall for Lyme Disease and Babesiosois. Three days on the cream and it was gone for good. I actually started feeling better after one day.

I also take acidophilus tablets everyday. It is just beneficial digestive bacteria. Someone told me that it is good for acid reflux, which I have (I also take Nexium every day), so I have been taking it for years. Unless I am on antibiotics for several weeks, like I was for the tick borne illnesses, I usually don't get the itchies because it keeps the yeast in check.

I make dr appts for my clients and I had a client that had one and they actually told me that they always tell you to try the OTC first. Then they would see her. Of course this was a very busy gyne office. Not every office probably does that.

Well thanks all, it gets better. Aunt Flo arrived today. I bought the 3 day otc stuff with the cream. It seems to be working.

Oh, Anon. Naturally! LOL! She is an intrusive "visitor" and always seems to get you when you already feel miserable.

I'm glad the stuff is working. Feel better! (((HUGS)))
