DVD Camcorders

Moms View Message Board: General Discussion: Archive December 2006: DVD Camcorders
By Marcia on Saturday, December 9, 2006 - 05:11 pm:

I'm thinking of buying one, and want opinions, please. We have a video camera, but rarely use it anymore. It's pretty big, and just a pain to take anywhere. I would love a little palmcorder.
There are lots of choices, and wide price ranges. Some use little tapes, and some use memory cards. I can't imagine a memory card holding that much. Does anyone have any preference, or pros and cons you could pass along?
Thanks!

I would go with one that records straight to a DVD. This way you eliminate the need to transfer images. We're actually in the market for one now.

We are in the market for one as well. We were thinking of the hard drive type. Come on, I know a bunch of you have 'em, let's hear about it.

I'm actually interested in something like that too!!! I need something more compact and user friendly :)

I have a Sony, and love it!! I have the Sony DCR-DVD92. It records directly to dvd. It has 20x voom, so the voom is really great. It also takes still photos. They are decent in quality. The camera is easy to use, it is small and lightweight. It is also not terribly expensive. It was great when we went to Disneyland. I just took this and not my still camera. I was able to shoot video, and take stills. The stills are good as long as you don't blow them up to big. There are a few drawbacks that I have found. The dvds are a little more expensive. I usually shop around, and get several when they are on sale. Also, the length of the dvds is only 30 minutes. But, I usually don't record for longer then that. Also, if you want to copy them to your computer to edit, etc, you have to buy extra software.

So, I think it is a great video camera for people like me that just want to shoot video and then watch it. It is so user friendly. However, if you are in to editing and copying, etc, you may want something a little more elaborate.

We just bought a Sony that records onto a hard drive and we just download it directly to the computer or disc. It's nice to not have to worry about tapes or anything. We took it on a trip to Europe this summer and 2 weeks worth and it didn't even begin to fill it up. You can also take still pictures with it. We love it. It's the Sony DCR-SR100.

Debbie, I'm curious... does yours record on a normal size DVD or is it the smaller ones! I have one that are the smaller ones and the only way we can play them back is by hooking the camera up to the tv/dvd player! Not a huge hassle, but a pain none the less!

It records to the small ones. Our dvd player has two rings where the dvd goes. One for regular size dvds and one for the small ones. (hope that makes sense)
