Home Security Systems?

Moms View Message Board: General Discussion: Archive December 2006: Home Security Systems?
By Mrsheidi on Thursday, December 7, 2006 - 05:06 pm:

I've had these horrific intruder nightmares since my DH has been deployed and they are getting worse. I was up at 3, 4, and then 5am this morning having nightmare after nightmare.
I have a security system already set up for the house but I know it's not activated. (The past owners had one put in.)

What companies do you use? Which ones to avoid? What to look for or ask for?

I have to get a massage tomorrow...my shoulders are killing me from this stress. I can barely move my head, they hurt so bad! I couldn't even get Connor out of his carseat today and I had to cancel my gym appt so I would have to load him up in the car again.

Ok, I'm crying...I miss my man. :(

{{{HUGS}}} We have used Protection One for several years, and have no complaints.

I can say that I have heard horrible things about ADT, I would never use them.

By Nicki on Thursday, December 7, 2006 - 08:06 pm:

Oh Heidi, no advice for you, just hugs! I'm so sorry about the nightmares. The bad ones seems to stay with you all day, don't they? And no wonder you are stressed. I hope the massage helps. I'm going to send good vibes your way every night for good dreams. You need your sleep and peace of mind. I'm keeping you in my prayers.

By Mrsheidi on Thursday, December 7, 2006 - 08:22 pm:

Kaye...can you elaborate? What kind of things? Thanks for the heads up.
And, thanks Trina, I've put in a request online to Protection One to have someone call me soon.
Thanks for the support Trina and Nicki. I needed those hugs and I always need prayers. This always happens 2 weeks after he leaves. Ugh. I'm getting sick now too. I'm going to take some nighttime Airborne and hope that helps. I think sleep would help too.

In general I have heard several customer service complaints.

My personal story is this. ADT installed and monitered the system in my home. However I was not the builder, I am actually the 4th owner and all the owners used adt. We just chose not to monitor initially. Well our house got struck by lightning and the alarm went haywire. I don't know the code to the alarm. Now I do have all the original paperwork, the contract to the house, the names of all the other people and a blaring unmonitored alarm going off for 2+ hours. So I call ADT, it is around 3 in the afternoon, first they won't tell me anything, there is a code that can reset the system, but they won't give me that info. They do show the sale of the house to me though. So I ask what it would take to have some one out to fix this. It is 85 dollars for the first 15 minutes and I don't know how much after that, however, if they get there after 5 it doubles, and with it being so late in the day, she said to expect them after 5. I said thanks but no thanks. Certainly not a way to win a customer! I ended up calling another company, a local company and explained my situation. I just wanted the darn thing to shut up. They walked me through step by step how to dismantle it. It was hugely time consuming....you have to disconnect the back up battery, kill the electric switch, unplug the unit from the attic and then remove every battery from the smoke detectors (i have 14)....anyway, so needless to say I loathe ADT. They could have told me that, especially since they were able to verify that I infact was the new homeowner!

(((HUGS))) Do you have any relaxation tapes that you can listen to in bed? Look up to the sky and know you and Scott are underneath it together.((((HEIDI))))

By Reds9298 on Thursday, December 7, 2006 - 09:45 pm:

Our home security system is a metal baseball bat under my side of the bed and a locked 380 in my DH's top dresser drawer. :)

I hope you find something to make you feel more secure. That's one of those things that once you start thinking about it, you just can't stop. ((HUGS))

(((HEIDI))) I've had a couple of those nightmares and it's so frightening.

We use Power Alarm security system. But i think that is a local one.

I hope you start sleeping better soon!

By Heaventree on Thursday, December 7, 2006 - 10:52 pm:

Heidi, I can relate. When DH is away sometimes I get scared. However, I have a big furry doggy with a very loud scary bark, which makes me feel a whole lot better. Doesn't your doggy make you feel a bit safer.

We don't have an alarm system but have discussed it in the past. I feel a whole lot safer now that we are in a smaller community. Living in the city was not so nice. I know things can happen anywhere.

Why are you not feeling safe? Because of where you live or because you are alone with Connor?

By Reds9298 on Thursday, December 7, 2006 - 10:55 pm:

Ditto Heaven about a dog. My dogs aren't big, but they will alert us to any unusual sounds. Having a big dog would be a great security bonus.

By Mrsheidi on Friday, December 8, 2006 - 12:56 pm:

Thanks you guys! :)
I do have a 70 lb lab but I don't let her upstairs anymore. We found out a month ago that Connor is highly allergic to dogs and she can't sleep with me because she snores. (She sleeps in her kennel in the basement.) We're in the process of giving her to the inlaws to see if that helps.
Not sure why I don't feel safe. I guess it's just being alone, without this 6 foot 1 huge beast of a man next to me. I have a mommy instinct to protect 24/7 now.
I'm going to get a massage tonight... :) I'm going to see if that will help too. Protection One should be calling me sometime today as well.

By Debbie on Friday, December 8, 2006 - 01:18 pm:

We have Protection One, and they have been great. I like having our alarm activated because dh travels every other week. The boy's bedrooms are at the front of the house, and ours is in the back. I only set it when dh is out of town, or we go on vacation. It is worth it though.

By Mrsheidi on Friday, December 8, 2006 - 01:39 pm:

How much is it, if you guys don't mind me asking?

By Trina~moderator on Friday, December 8, 2006 - 02:33 pm:

We pay $89 4x a year. (We're billed quarterly.) It has been a long time since we signed up. I believe there are different options and service plans available.

We set the full alarm when we go away on vacation. At night we can arm the exit doors. This really gives me peace of mind.

When DS was 3 or 4 he got out of bed, unbeknownst to us, and opened the front door, which set off the alarm. I jolted out of bed and found him crying by the door. Then a very nice looking police officer promptly arrived on our front step. I assured him all was well and he went on his way. When DD was 3, I heard DS sternly telling her, "Don't ever open the doors without Mom or Dad because a really loud bell will ring and a police man will show up!" LOL!

By Debbie on Friday, December 8, 2006 - 09:19 pm:

I want to say we pay around $12.00 a month. I also pay by the quarter.
