Moms View Message Board: General Discussion: Archive November 2006: Cheap Airfare Sites

Need sites I can find cheap airfare from DTW to Miami or Ft. Lauderdale in Feb. I have checked everywhere and cannot find anything cheaper than $210pp. But can find it cheaper to fly to Europe same time. makes sense huh!!

I like Hotwire.com, and Priceline can be a good site as well. And honestly, there isn't much rhyme or reason to pricing. I was pricing flights to visit a friend in either Jersey or DC (depending on days I'd go) and the difference for flights from Kansas City to Newark, Philly, and DC were drastic, even on the same days. And the most ironic flight I've seen is a flight from KCI to LAX, with a layover in ATLANTA! Why would you fly from the midwest to the east to the west?? DUH!!!! Good luck with the search!!

Crystal 1 trip I found went from Detroit to layover in Texas to Miami. Tell me that makes sense at all.

Its the hubs. Each airline has hub cities, and frequently they don't do direct flights (or, if they do, the flight costs an arm and a leg). Most airlines break a flight with a stop at one of their hubs. I agree - it's absurd. And makes for much longer flights and sometimes long layovers.

I do a lot of travel booking for my bosses, and oftentimes the flight that has a stop at a hub (never mind that you have to change planes in Detroit when you are going from Philadelphia to Charleston) will cost $200-300, where a direct (non-stop) flight from Philadelphia to, say, Charleston (if you can find one) costs over $1,000.

Such are the joys of "deregulation".

At one time there was actually a flight out of XNA (northwest arkansas regional airport) to Costa Rica that stops in Atlanta or somewhere? And then goes on to Newark, New Jersey, then on to San Jose. LOL We always look and make sure dh's travel dept didnt book us going that route. We like to fly back and forth through DFW or Houston. Dh has had to fly home through Miami once...

Tonya often times you can actually find good deals on the actual airlines websites. For example American Airlines ran a special in July on tickets to Costa Rica for $400. That was a very good deal during rainy season. You just had to use the ticket before a certain date in December. I watch several airlines websites for deals and I also get the travelzoo email with hot deals of the week. www.worryfreevacations.com is aother website I have seen some good deals on. (i think that's the name of the website.)
