Halloween

Moms View Message Board: General Discussion: Halloween
By Enchens on Wednesday, October 9, 2013 - 01:35 pm:

So, what does everyone have planned? Parties? Trick -or-Treating? Costumes ideas?

My younger ds will go as Mario from Super Mario Brothers yet again (thank goodness!) and my older ds wants to be a Ninja. Last year he was a knight. My dd is two so I don't know what we will do for her. I don't know if she will understand the whole "Halloween thing." I don't dress up. I stay home and pass out candy. DH takes the kids on our (very long) street and then "checks" their stash. Funny how his favorite candies are always questionable and need further scrutiny....

What are you all up to?

I've never been a big fan of the Halloween thing. I do love fall though. We take my kids out trick or treating...and I always make them choose something non-scary to be. I'm like that, haha. My oldest won't go this year...she'll think she's way too mature for trick or treating. Unless her friends ask her to with them...then she'll be all for it. We'll just take my two boys out. We don't get a ton of trick or treaters. Especially with Halloween being on a school night.
I don't ever dress up. My DH would, but he's so busy with work and stuff that he doesn't have time to figure out costumes. He loves Halloween. He gets that from my MIL.
I wish time could slow down starting the day after Halloween. I love November and December and all that comes with them. I wish it would linger on a little longer!

I don't like Halloween too much, either. DH thinks the kids would miss out if we didn't participate.

I do love fall. I love the weather and staying indoors with the fireplace going, and making hot chocolate and goodies. We love curling up to the holiday movies and watching them on the couch with the whole family. It's truly our time. I like baking and having the house smell of cinnamon or chocolate or peppermint. I love the anticipation of Christmas. I really love this time of year.

I love Halloween but since we live in the country and the kids are in high school now, we don't do much for it anymore. We used to love to decorate the house and have hot cider and hot dogs after they trick-or-treated. Great memories. We would load up on a hayrack and the kids would get pulled around town.

Halloween kind of kicks off the holiday season for me. I seriously start listening to Christmas carols in early November and start really getting in the spirit. I don't decorate until the day after Thanksgiving though.

I am the same way...halloween means the holidays are here! Years ago we did holidays with everyone, so I had to have my act together, so it is more fun to enjoy the shopping when you have Christmas music to wrap gifts to! Now it is just us, we used to buy gifts for 26 family members! So it is different. I still love it, so I start baking, doing crafts etc. I will have all my shopping done near thanksgiving. i love black friday shopping, so I hold for that day usually.

Kaye...buying for 26 family members seems huge! We used to celebrate with my DH's extended family and had to buy for about 15 people. That was right after we were first married. We had so little money that it was usually a bitter process. But that's just the way it was. We don't celebrate with them anymore, thank goodness. The families were just getting too big and they didn't believe in drawing names or anything like that.

Gift giving is a difficult subject for us, too. Dh and I differ in that department. I just think we spend way too much money and we don't really purchase for a lot of people (less than 10). He seems to think, eh, it's ok. I feel we are getting away from what the true meaning is but I can't really do much about it. I tried to do something last year and it really backfired. I really don't know what we will do this year. I just want to focus on being with dh and kids and doing all the stuff I mentioned before. Everything else is being pushed waaaay out of my thoughts.
