I'm sort of proud of myself today...

Moms View Message Board: General Discussion: Archive September 2006: I'm sort of proud of myself today...
By Mrsheidi on Sunday, September 24, 2006 - 08:44 pm:

I ran 6 miles at the gym!!! And, I was able to watch an HOUR of football uninterrupted! :) I forgot how much I love football. I've been running about 3-4 miles every other day but I finally had enough stamina to do 6!

I'm training for a half marathon (13 miles on Oct 14th) and I finally found a bra that WORKS for me too. So, now my back doesn't hurt...just my feet and knees. I think I need to buy new shoes. ugh. I swear I just bought some last year. I'm going to buy Nike's again though...these Asics didn't last long.

Random post, I know. But, I'm feeling pretty proud and happy. :)

Way to go woman!! I think that's GREAT! I couldn't run ONE mile, let alone six. I'm a walker myself, with some light jogging. I think you should be very proud!!

By Heaventree on Sunday, September 24, 2006 - 09:07 pm:

Yeah Hoo! Heidi! I'm so jealous, I miss my runs, I never seem to have time.

Light bulb! I just realized that Matthew is in preschool, I can run with Cameron in the mornings with the jogging stroller. Why didn't I think of this 2 weeks ago?

Heidi I love you thank you for posting this, where are my running shoes!

Oh yes, BUY A NEW PAIR OF SHOES! At least every 3 months if you are running regularly, they wear out faster than you think and your shins will thank you.

BTW what bra did you buy?

Thank you, thank you, thank you Heidi, you inspired me tonight.

By Tunnia on Sunday, September 24, 2006 - 09:18 pm:

Wow, that's great! Now, go get yourself some new running shoes, girl!!!:) You deserve them (and need them).

By Mrsheidi on Sunday, September 24, 2006 - 09:20 pm:

Awwww...thanks, you guys! You seriously made me smile! Thanks for the shoes advice. I haven't taken running so seriously and now, at the age of 31, I'm running further than I ever did in college! :)

Heaven, I bought this one and it's THE BEST one I've ever had.
Moving Comfort Bra

(I bought the 36D...I'm normally a 38D but I like them tight and it feels absolutely comfortable. I wear my daily comfy 38D bras on the tightest closure and my 36D on the last closure and it's fine.)

The shoulder straps stay put and don't let me bounce and the cups hold me up and in. I'm in lllooovve. I'm buying at least 2 more very soon.

I'm VERY leery about athletic bras too. I've ran at least 12 miles in this one and it feels *awesome*. :) Until I get a reduction, this will work!! :)

For running shoes, it's not the time that you have them, it's the mileage that you put on them. Once you have about 100 - 150 miles on them, it's time for a new pair. Trust me. It's way cheaper to purchase decent running shoes than to pay for the doctor to treat you damaged knees.

And, if you are running on October 14, you do not want to wait until the day or even week before. Buy them tomorrow and break them in. Also, do not run in new clothes. Run in clothing that you have already broken in or you will be chafed like there is not tomorrow. You'll bleed in areas that shouldn't be bleeding.

As for the shoes, go out to marathonguide.com and ask where a good shoe place is in your area. You will need a sales rep that can look at your foot and tell you what you need. The decent marathoners will know this. It will more than likely not be a chain store.

Way to go!!! How exciting about the 1/2 marathon. Yes, do buy new shoes. You should replace them every 3-6 months if you are running regularly.

I am signed up to run a 5k in November. I am so excited. I didn't run for about a month because of our move. I just started back last week. Gosh, I really missed it.

Thanks for posting the link on the bra, I will have to check it out.

I found the bra cheapest here:
Fiona Moving Comfort Bra

And, I will look at new shoes tomorrow. You're right, Tayjar, I do have to break them in. I can't wait to run in decent shoes.
And, Debbie, way to go! It's nice to have a "goal", huh? Good luck!! It's been nice outside lately too, so I'm looking forward to going with the jogger stroller on Tuesday. I'm taking the day "off" tomorrow...tee hee...

SIX MILES? Heidi that is awesome! I am more of a walker/jogger like Deanna. And one mile would do me in!

I had no idea you were training for a half marathon! You remind me of my girlfriend. She is a runner and is in such good shape and such a positive person. She even does this this plunge in the icy cold water every winter in Lake Coeur d'Alene on the first of January. So unlike me!

Good job, Heidi!

By Kernkate on Sunday, September 24, 2006 - 11:24 pm:

^5 to you Heidi!!!
I "walk" a mile a day and that is enough for me.
You will do great in the marathon!

By Hol on Monday, September 25, 2006 - 12:11 am:

Wow, six miles!! I'm with Adena and Nicki. If I can WALK one mile, I feel proud of myself. Actually, I used to be a long distance walker about 14 years ago. I'd walk five miles a day, longer on weekends. DH and I used to hike a LOT and go on hiking weekends. I felt SO good then, and was a lot thinner.

Losing my son and going through menopause changed my metabolism. I developed hypothyroidism and severe osteoarthritis in my knees and ankles. I am happy now to take a one mile walk (I have a measured route) and ride the stationary bike at the gym.

I so MISS my long walks and viewing the outdoors from something other than the car. SAVOR your youth (you are younger than my DD), and appreciate your youthful body while you have it.

Way to go, sweetie!!

By Dawnk777 on Monday, September 25, 2006 - 12:37 am:

Congratulations! I'll stick to walking!

By Pamt on Monday, September 25, 2006 - 12:38 am:

Good for you!!! WTG Heidi! My DH just started running a few months ago. He couldn't run a block when he started. Now he's run two 5Ks and is also training for a half marathon in January that he's running with my brother and SIL. He did an 8.7 mile run today and he's lost 20 pounds during his training. I'm very impressed with you!

By Trina~moderator on Monday, September 25, 2006 - 08:13 am:

You go girl! :)

By Breann on Monday, September 25, 2006 - 10:39 am:

WOW! I'm totally impressed :)

By Mrsheidi on Monday, September 25, 2006 - 01:20 pm:

Thanks, everyone... y'all give me the mental strength to keep going. :) I also have 2 neighbors who are going to do the race as well. So, when I see them out training, it also motivates me!!

Nicki, I try to stay positive. Although, an icy cold plunge? Holy cow...no way jose!

I just wanted something to help me focus on staying in shape, you know. I used to belong to all these teams when I was younger and, as you get older, it's harder to have goals. Nevermind the fact that I want to look sexy Nov 1-14th! (Scott's R&R time to come home for a bit.)

And, as far as walking, I think that is great you guys!! Walking is actually better for you, I think. I just can't get a good enough workout in by doing that. I don't sweat until mile 3. If I go with the jogger stroller, Connor gets fussy by mile 3 if I walk and, if I go to the gym, I don't want Connor in the play room longer than an hour. I just can't stomach it for longer. Maybe I will when he's 3. Who knows...

And, Hol, I think it's great that you exercise period. There were a few weeks in there when Connor was in the hospital and I got sidetracked from my training. It's hard to get back on the wagon, no? I can't imagine what you've been through though.

And, ^5 to your hubby, Pam! It all starts with tiny steps...I started with walking and it progressed from there. :)

By Mrsheidi on Monday, September 25, 2006 - 01:21 pm:

PS- I bought some new shoes today too...Nike! :)
Air Max 180

They are very comfortable on the toes too. Like I'm walking on air all around my feet!

By Hol on Tuesday, September 26, 2006 - 12:46 am:

Nice running shoes!!

By Dana on Tuesday, September 26, 2006 - 01:30 pm:

WTG! I haven't run is years. My knees and shins just can't take it. I was never a distant runner, but in college I used to run 3 miles a day, but only because someone made a bet with me :)
