When do you decorate for fall?

Moms View Message Board: General Discussion: Archive September 2006: When do you decorate for fall?

When do you all put up your Fall decorations? (for those of you that do) The last couple of years I haven't done much, but I feel ready to go all out again now! I've been getting my things out and going through it again.

I usually put my decorations up the end of Sept, when the leaves start to change here. It puts me in the mood when all the trees are so colorful.

Me, too.

By Tink on Saturday, September 9, 2006 - 01:40 pm:

I have already started. I pulled out my autumn wreath and bought a couple of autumn-scented candles. I know I should be waiting (our temps were still in the 90's this week) but it's my favorite season and I just want it to be here a little earlier!:)

What do all of you use for autumn decorations? I have a wreath, candles and I usually pick up some fall produce to put in a bowl on the kitchen table. I would like to get a bale of straw this year for our front porch and maybe a wheat bundle to put out somewhere.

I usually put my stuff up Oct 1st.

By Bellajoe on Saturday, September 9, 2006 - 02:42 pm:

I usually try to wait till October.

I just bought a cute little fall plate, from Hobby Lobby and I already put it up. A few houses around here, have decorated their front yards for fall.

By Kate on Saturday, September 9, 2006 - 04:31 pm:

:( I'm sorry, I just don't like houses decorated for fall so soon! I find it depressing. I'm in the northeast where summer is fleeting, and to me fall decorations further chase off our summer. I say October is the 'official' fall month. We have a neighbor who puts up scarecrows and autumn wreaths in September and I won't even look at her house, LOL!

By Dawnk777 on Saturday, September 9, 2006 - 08:24 pm:

Summer was hot enough and long enough for me. I'm ready for fall! It's chilly out today and I'm lovin' it! (Northeast winds make for exciting waves on Lake Michigan, too!)

By Tink on Saturday, September 9, 2006 - 08:39 pm:

Since summer starts in April around here and lasts through October, I can't decorate according to the weather. I've always thought of September, October and November as the autumn months so I decorate for fall as soon as the back to school rush is over. If I waited for the leaves to turn, I'd decorate for two weeks before it was time for the winter holidays!:)

I wait until mid October and put Halloween stuff out. We are still swimming until the end of Sept. (unless there is an unexpected cool front)so sometimes fall weather doesn't actually arrive until almost Thanksgiving. Those of us who live this far south can always recall a Christmas spent in shorts (ugh)!

By Breann on Saturday, September 9, 2006 - 09:36 pm:

Yesterday!!! It is already getting chilly here, and fall is my favorite time of year. We have fall decorations out now and we put our Halloween stuff around October 1st. Then I take the Halloween stuff down right after the 31st, but leave the rest of the fall stuff up until Thanksgiving.

We have an orchard type place called Eckerts and they grow apples, pumpkins, gords, etc, in addition to other types of produce throughout the year and christmas trees as well. Anyway, last year they had an area where you could make your own scarecrow, you were given a pair of old jeans, a flannel shirt, straw hat, and burlap bag to make the head, we stuffed it with straw and used twine to tie it up and then the kids of course decided that he needed a name so we named him "Bob". So pretty soon we will be bringing "Bob" out of the garage so that he can sit on our porch!!

The scarecrow sounds cute! We have an apple orchard near us. Emily already asked when we are going. Last year, we went in November. I think we will go sooner this year. For one, it was cold and two, it got dark shortly after we got there and they have some animals you can feed and pet. We didn't get much enjoyment out of it. Maybe sometime before the end of September, before the time change, would be good.

I start wearing my fall scrub tops, right after Labor Day! I could hardly wait, until after Labor Day!

I think we will decorate sometime in the next couple of weeks. It is starting to feel like Fall a bit here, especially in the evenings, and I love it! We put up a scarecrow outside, misc. decorative pumpkins inside the house, and door decoration. Once Oct.1 gets here, we have 2 lighted pumpkin things for in the house, then we get our real pumpkins for outside, and I usually make a web with a spider on a lighted curio I have inside. I take down the Halloween stuff right after and leave the other Fall things up until about a week before T'Giving.

We decorate for Xmas the week before T'Giving. We got into that habit when we were almost always taking a vacation over T'Giving and didn't want to decorate when we got back. I guess it stuck.

I started putting fall stuff up Friday night. Tablecloth and candles and a few fall looking nick nacks. Halloween stuff goes up on t he 1st. Thanksgiving stuff going up on the 1st of Nov when the halloween stuff comes down and I mix it in with the fall stuff. The the day after thanksgiving the Christmas stuff goes up.

I usually wait until October, but I'm getting in the mood to take down my summer stuff. I won't put up my cornstalks or hay bales until October, though. We don't decorate for Halloween, so that's not a problem (it's all fall stuff, and lasts until Thanksgiving).

We decorated early this year because of Jessica's birthday party (Pirates of the Caribbean theme). We had a lot of creepy decorations out for the party but most have been taken down. I have a beautiful fall wreath on the door. We have been making our new seasonal candles this week (candy corn, brown sugar, apple cider) so the house smells great.
We decorate for Christmas in November because we celebrate Christmas & Thanksgiving with relatives on Thanksgiving day. I do not mind being decorated early but I do find myself taking everything down on December 26. 2 months of decorations is enough for me :)
