Seeing my PCM tomorrow morning

Moms View Message Board: General Discussion: Archive September 2006: Seeing my PCM tomorrow morning
By Cat on Tuesday, September 5, 2006 - 01:01 pm:

I called and got an appointment at 9:30 tomorrow morning for my hand. I would have liked to have gone today, but ended up seeing my chiropractor this morning (the whole right side of my body needed adjusting because of my babying my hand!) and then my licensing specialist came out. So we'll see how it goes. My chiro showed me the x-rays again and where she thinks it's broken. It aches constantly! Bruises don't ache ALL the time! I don't have full use of it, but probably about 85%. I can put weight on it IF I don't bend it at the wrist, and even if I don't I can't put all my weight on it. I did buy a compression bandage (like a glove) that is helping keep the swelling down, but that's about all. We'll see what my PCM says tomorrow. I'm going to ask for more films and a referral to the ortho doc. I'll be surprised if he does it, but am not expecting that much cooperation. I'll let you all know. My mom and my pastor have both called already today to see if I've gotten it looked at again! lol They're sweet. :) It's nice to have people that care (like all of you!). Now if I can get the kids (and dogs and cats and husband!) to stop bumping it...

Keep us posted. Good luck.

Cat, maybe you tore a tendon. LOL Saying that because I did that Sunday. Went to the urgent care, they immobilized, saw a hairline fracture, but thought I had damaged the tendon. Referred me to a hand specialist, went today, I am in a hard cast for 3.5 weeks, & if it has not healed, then surgery............... Just a thought.........hope you are better soon...........

Did the entire population of Momsview walk under a ladder or break a mirror??? Karen, I hope the cast and immobilization does the trick. I'll be keeping my fingers crossed.

Cat, I'll be REALLY hoping that your PCM will refer you to an orthopedist! Let us know what you find out tomorrow!

((((Cat)))) Let us know how you're doing... there is no reason it should still be hurting like that. Good luck!!

By Dawnk777 on Tuesday, September 5, 2006 - 09:19 pm:

No, I'm still okay! I'm the queen of sprained ankles and I've been good for a very long time. It's getting kind of scary, actually! I don't know if I'm being more careful, or just really lucky!

Me, too, Dawn.

Cat--I seemed to have missed how you hurt it and when. Hugs and prayers going your way for a good outcome with your PCM.

By Cat on Wednesday, September 6, 2006 - 07:51 am:

Debbie, I shut my hand in the car door last Tuesday afternoon. I posted under "OW!".

It's still achey this morning, swollen on the back of the hand (although not near as bad as it was!) and still pretty discolored, especially on the inside of the wrist. I'll let you know how it goes this morning.

By Karen~admin on Wednesday, September 6, 2006 - 09:25 am:

Cat, can you go to a hand specialist???

By Cat on Wednesday, September 6, 2006 - 09:39 am:

Karen, it depends on what the AFA has. They have one of the best orthos in the Air Force (Nothing but the best for the Academy cadets--especially those football players). If they don't have a hand specialist they'd refer me to one in town. That would mean 1-2 weeks for the referral to go through and then another 4-6 to get an appointment. Our health insurance is great, but man there are some major down sides. We'll see.

By Bea on Wednesday, September 6, 2006 - 11:28 am:

Yes Cat. The down side to military medical care for dependents and retirees is, that by the time you get to see a doctor, you are either dead or recovered. I always ask to see the PA. I get in so much faster, and she is usually more thorough than the doctor anyway. Good luck with your hand.

By Cat on Wednesday, September 6, 2006 - 02:55 pm:

The doc ordered more x-rays and still says it's not broken. He said aching in the hand is normal with soft tissue damage. He also said it would heal faster if I'd broken it and that I'm probably looking at 6-9 months for the soft tissue damage to heal (as opposed to 2-3 months for a break). Grrr. He said the radiologist didn't see anything in the x-rays from last week and he'll look at them again and they should have his report by Friday. He said I can do "activity as tolerated" and if the radiologist has a different recommendation he'd let me know. So karate's okay--what I can tolerate. I guess that means I can practice the violin for short periods of time, too (until it starts to really hurt). So lesson learned??? NEVER shut your hand in the car door!!! And if you do? Slam it hard enough to break it! lol

By Karen~admin on Wednesday, September 6, 2006 - 03:21 pm:

I have learned this week that breaks heal a lot quicker than tendons and other stuff. I called my osteopath who treats me for my back and other stuff (he's a former physical therapist) for an opinion on my hand and he said a torn tendon will not heal on its own, so *I* am seriously considering going ahead with the surgery and get this fixed instead of spending maybe 2-3 months like this. I *hope* yours is just a soft tissue injury like they are saying. Good luck!!!

I have been reading your thread and I am sorry I haven't posted. I thought I should chime in and tell you that I hope it all gets better for you soon. I am glad you got some answers. (((HUGS)))

By Dawnk777 on Wednesday, September 6, 2006 - 04:34 pm:

Yeah, I know it takes a while, for a sprained ankle to really feel better. Waiting for your hand to heal is going to be frustrating, too.

By Hol on Wednesday, September 6, 2006 - 11:09 pm:

Did I miss something? How did KAREN hurt HER hand?

By Crystal915 on Wednesday, September 6, 2006 - 11:42 pm:

Ugh, I wish they could just tell you for sure what's wrong with it!! I hope you heal quickly!!
