Bone pain

Moms View Message Board: General Discussion: Archive July 2006: Bone pain
By Christylee on Wednesday, July 26, 2006 - 05:45 pm:

Does anyone experience pain in the bones ever? I'm 30 years old and I've been experiencing actual "pain" in what I believe to be coming from my bones.

At times it even takes my breath away. I do have an appointment with my specialist on August 29th but wanted to see if anyone else has ever had this before.

Which bones? I experience ongoing NERVE pain in my back and legs, and this feels a LOT like it's coming from my bones....like a toothache, but inside my legs. I know what it is in my case and what causes it, but it still *feels* like it's in the bones. This can happen with carpel tunnel as well. Is the pain you are feeling "all over" or localized?

By Christylee on Wednesday, July 26, 2006 - 08:14 pm:

It's pretty much centralized in my arms, legs, and hips.

Get tested for B-12 deficiency. I had the same pain that you describe in the long bones (arms and legs). My Dr. tested me for lack of B-12. I was deficient. I get a shot once a month. 2 cc's of Vitamin B-12 (you need a prescription if you are going to do it yourself) given intramuscularly. It really helps.

While you're waiting for your appointment, try taking some high quality calcium supplements.

By Karen~admin on Thursday, July 27, 2006 - 07:58 am:

You need to get it checked out. It can be an indication of a serious medical problem, or it could also be a side effect of medications.

I have had bone pain for years, and most of you know all the stuff that's *wrong* with me, so I won't elaborate. I do have bone scans and bone density tests every 2 years, and I have osteopenia, arthritis and a lot of disk/joint degeneration, and certain bones ache and throb - it's a *deep* pain. Bone pain is different from nerve pain, with nerve pain there is usually some burning or tingling involved.

I agree, get some Caltrate D600 Plus and take it twice a day, or those Viactiv chews, twice a day. And don't let your doctor pass it off as *normal*. You need to know if there is something going on.

Thank you Holly, Marcia, and Karen. I will definitly be talking with my doctor on it, I've got a list going of things to talk to him about and have it on there now.

THANK YOU!

Christy - Do you take prednisone for any medical condition? That can cause bone pain in some people because it leaches calcium from your bones.

By Christylee on Friday, July 28, 2006 - 07:38 am:

No I do not, the only medications I am on currently is Paxil CR 50mg and an occasional Ambian to help with sleeping.

I beginning to wonder if it's not all this rain and maybe arthritis. It's not at my joints really as it is in the bone but we have had a incredible amount of rain this summer and it just started that I am aware of.

By Ilovetom on Friday, July 28, 2006 - 08:38 am:

Christy- I have bone pain sometimes too. Not all the time, but alot after I go and work out.

Cherry juice and then I have used cherry tart herb pill things- you get them in the pharmacy- and they do work. They didn't take all the pain of getting old away, but alittle.

By Hol on Friday, July 28, 2006 - 12:41 pm:

Do get checked out by the doctor, though. As Karen stated, it CAN be a sign of serious illness, too, most notably leukemia. The possibility is rare, and there are lots of other, minor causes for it.

I'm not saying this to scare you. I just want to make sure that you DO see the doctor. ((HUGS))

By Christylee on Friday, July 28, 2006 - 11:54 pm:

No fears Holly, I WILL be there on August 29th!

:-) I have had this appointment for over 2 months (my doctor moved out of state and I'm seeing the doctor that took his patients so his practice doubled just about).

Christy, when I started having these multiple symptoms years ago, they tested me several times for Lupus and RA. My doc insists I am presenting as RA, but my tests say otherwise. But as I said above, I have a lot of medical issues that relate to bones/disks, etc. Mention these tests to your doc, it doesn't hurt to be sure. You need to be proactive in your own healthcare. Email me if you want to, OK? kay luvs sun at a o l dot com

Karen - that's interesting about the RA. I have RA symptoms, too, but my rheumatoid factor always comes back negative. I have OA that is age related.

My DD (age 33 - diagnosed at age 28); and my Mom, age 86, both have SEVERE RA. My DD takes Embrel. Before that, she was on Remicade. My Mom doesn't like doctors and would never seek treatment for hers. Now, she is confined to a wheel chair, and her hands are like claws.

My DD was tested for Lupus, too. Very scary! I guess, on top of the OA, I have fibromyalgia, because I get very achy and fatigued in the afternoon. I sometimes have to lie down. That's why I'm not working outside the home right now.

My symptoms started at menopause, about five years ago. I also found out I was hypo-thyroid and B-12 deficient.

I, too, have osteopenia and some disk degeneration in my lumbar spine. I get bone density tests every two years. I take my Citrical with D everyday, and I am a milk drinker.

My rheumatologist (and DD's) said that there is still a lot they don't know about auto-immune diseases, especially in women, and the role that hormones play in the whole scheme.

By Karen~admin on Saturday, July 29, 2006 - 04:42 pm:

Hol, we have a lot of the same stuff going on then. I have all of what you've got going on plus some other stuff.

I have DDD in my entire spine and spinal stenosis as well.

It amazes me how much pain OA can cause! Some of my fingers are starting to *curve* and look *gnarled*. Lovely. NOT And in my neck, shoulders, thumbs, and lumbar area you can hear the bones grate against each other if I do certain things or move a certain way. Not to mention it feels great..........NOT!

Hol-Hormones play a huge factor in RA.I was diagnosed when I was 23.It took forever b/c my MD just considered it an old person disease and never thought that could be it.I went into remission when I got preganant with my DD and it lasted 3yrs.I never wanted to take the hard meds b/c I wanted to wait until I had all the kids I wanted.I'm still in remission and I'm not sure how long it will last for. They wanted to put me on methotrexate in the beginning and I said noooo way. They wanted to be aggresive with it but I wanted children first.Between pregnancies I was on Celebrex.Somedays when I wake up stiff Motrin does the trick for me.I just make sure to eat properly and get my 8-9 hours of sleep.

By Karen~admin on Saturday, July 29, 2006 - 05:25 pm:

Is it me, or does it appear that more and more people have RA?? I've found out recently that a few people I've known for years have it. And what would be the reason for more people having it?

By Hol on Saturday, July 29, 2006 - 05:54 pm:

Good question! Maybe it's environmental, dietary, I don't know. I do know that there is a genetic link. Apparently, I am the carrier from my Mom to my DD, which makes me feel very guilty, even tho I had no control over it.

DD's DX came after her divorce and the death of her brother.

Sherri, DD wanted to wait, too, but the disease was ravaging her joints so quickly, they told her she'd be in a wheelchair in two years. She, too, wanted to hold off until after her babies. She refused the methotrexate for the same reasons that you did. She had to come off the Embrel during her first trimester. After that, it was okay. They *SAY* it doesn't cross the placenta. So far, so good with little GD.

Even the short time off the Embrel, she sustained quite a lot of damage to her wrists. She can't take Celebrex because she has a sulfa allergy. (So do I. That's why I cried when they took Vioxx off the market).

DD never went into remission during the pregnancy, even tho she hoped she might. That's why they are really debating about having another. :(

Hol-Lots of decisions for you're DD.My rheumatologist always told me for me to control the disease and not let the disease control me.If I hadn't listened to him,I wouldn't have my boys today.I was going through a rough time and I really wanted another baby so bad.If my RA had gotten worse with my 1st maybe I wouldn't have cared to have more.

Karen- When I first started working in pharmacy in 1993 there was hardly a script for RA.Now the scripts for RA pour into the pharmacy.I wonder if its enviornmental also.My gramma also had RA. I hate to think of passing this disease down to future generations.Hopefully they will find out why the body is attacking itself sometime soon.
